章節 38: For god’s love
A few days passed and Zaelia was busy gathering her fifty men. She tried to make plans, tried to imagine the rations she needed to take, to calculate the weight of their bags for the distance to make. She was spending her time with the scouts and she was lacking some sleep. She walked through the tents, it was their last day before the departure when she saw the figure of Zephira in the evening light, crossing her arms and waiting for her to come to join. She stepped into her tent and Zaelia followed the elder.
Once inside, they sat on the floor in front of the little table. The elder poured the tea and took a deep breath.
"My child, tell me why you want to do this."
Zaelia raised her head and watched Zephira straight in the eyes.
"For the glory of Archanium."
"What glory?" asked Zephira, "Do you also want to ascend? Do you want to catch his attention and become a goddess?"
Zaelia chuckled, she was proud of her ideas, since she was about to leave to an almost certain death she explained everything to the elder.
"I don't want to be a goddess, I want to be more than that."
The elder had a very curious expression mixed with surprise and fear.
"More than a goddess?"
Zaelia was speaking with conviction, at this moment the elder could feel how much this subject mattered to the young woman.
"If I serve Archanium for a reward, then I will never be more than another greedy god. My faith in him is better than that. I don't want to be a goddess, I want to serve him until my life ends. I want to die one day with the pride that I gave all my life for him. That every breath of mine was full of love for him. I want to make our tribe great to make him proud of us."
She clenched her fist.
"I want to make us conquer Earth. I want everyone to bow in front of us. In his name and for his love. If I ascend one day, I will not be able to continue to bend the world in his name openly. I will have to obey the will of other gods to not interfere with humankind. To help to kill a few demons from time to time? What glory is in that? I don't want to be an immortal, I want only one life and I want it for him from the beginning to its end."
Zephira sighed in despair as she put her hand on Zaelia's.
"My child, I believe in you and I believe in your talent. This is exactly what scares me the most. I believe you will succeed in all your plans and I am afraid your dreams will surpass you. I beg you one last time Zaelia. Abandon your ideas..."
Zaelia looked horrified by the words of the elder.
"Abandon?! How can you say that? You were my only ally!"
The elder had shiny wet eyes watching the young woman.
"I am your ally, this is why I am telling you that. It is not too late yet."
Zaelia stood up furious.
"You are just a coward like the others. I will return victorious, I will bring glory to our clan and I will have no regrets, unlike you."
The elder was stomached, Zaelia could be extremely brutal. She saw her going away and she knew it was the last time she would see her.
After she left the tent, Zephira lay on her bed and whispered to herself.
"I am so sorry, my child. I failed you, you have sealed your fate tonight."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The last one of her life.
Zaelia couldn't believe it, Zephira tried to stop her. She walked furious through the camp and went directly to her tent. She checked her bag for the trip, her weapons, and her clothes. Everything was ready and she never felt so confident. She took a bottle and killed it in her bed to make her fall asleep as fast as possible. Her night was agitated due to the elder's words but in the end, she awakened the next day with a very large smile.
At the first light of the day, she almost jumped from her mat and grabbed her stuff. She was ready, her heart was pounding in her chest like crazy. She took a moment to watch her tent. She didn't know if she would come back and the idea that it was maybe the last time crossed her mind. For sure, things would never be the same anyway after this.
She walked outside. Slowly, the fifty gathered in the main place. Zaelia didn't see Zephira, she thought the elder would have at least told her goodbye, she felt hurt. She understood that the elder turned her back to her after she opened her heart to her, she had no idea about the situation and she felt betrayed.
