Sitting outside while nothing was happening, Scythe started to think about his past. Starting when he arrived at Zanders home, just over a year ago.
After healing from the arrow wounds, Scythe was cautious of both Zander and Alicia as they were people he didn't know. Alicia was kind and motherly, something that Scythe didn't know he missed. Zander was aloof, but at times he was serious. "Hey kid," Zander called out, "How are you doing?"
"A little sore still." Scythe said coldly
"Understandable." Zander nodded, "How healed do you think you are?"
"Mostly, I need to start moving so I don't lock up," Scythe stretched, wincing slightly at the remaining pain.
"You should be careful," Zander walked back to his work, "I'll let you know if I need any help."
"Do you need any help now?" Scythe asked, "I've done nothing the last few days."
"Can you swing a hammer?"
"Yeah, I used to forge, when I was young." Scythe opened up a little.
"You forged before? Well, I could use your help in making a tool shed." Zander spoke, "Alicia wants me to clean up my tool mess. And having some help would be nice for a change."
"I can." Scythe followed after Zander.
The two were a little awkward at first, but as the day passed, they both got used to each other. By nightfall, the shed was half done. "We got some good work done. If I was doing this by myself I might have just finished the posts." Zander took a step back, seeing the work they did, "Thanks for your help."
"I wasn't that much help." Scythe downplayed his work.
"Come on," Zander spoke, "Let's go get dinner."
"I feel I could eat an entire wyvern right now." Scythe exclaimed
"That's a lot of food," Zander teased, "we might have leg somewhere."
"Thanks," Scythe followed.
Now inside, Alicia served dinner for Scythe and Zander, after grabbing her plate and sitting at the table, She asked, "How'd it go?"
"It went great, Scythe was a lot of help." Zander ate through his food, "We got the roof on the shed."
"It was nice doing something so simple for once," Scythe took small bites, "compared to what I thought was normal."
"What was that?" Alicia asked
"I... cooked a lot. Espicly for the captains." Scythe hid some of the truth.
"You can cook?" Alicia seemed happy, "You should cook dinner sometime, I curious about how you cook."
"Sure, I'll make lunch tomorrow." Scythe offered.
"Are you sure?" Zander asked, "I could use your help."
"Zander," Alicia gave a look, "he can't be yours all the time."
Zander backed off a little, "Okay, you win. I'm looking forward to your food Scythe."
"It's not as good as your Alicia," Scythe spoke forwardly, "But I'll try my best."
Scythe finally felt comfortable in this house, but he would prefer to be laying under the stars. Dreaming of being on the road, never staying in the same place for long. Scythe was unaware of the shadow that followed him. Hearing voices, "Hey Tungst, think we could make some money with that cargo?"
Scythe launched up in a cold sweat. His heart racing, he was looking back and forth in a panic. He ran outside, trying to forget those memories. Some parts of Scythe wanted revenge. But the thought scared him, was he turning into a senseless monster.
Scythe sat on the steps outside of the door, thinking between staying and running away. Alicia opened the door behind him and sat next to him saying nothing. "I'm sorry." Scythe broke the silence
"What for?" Alicia asked.
Scythe laughed a little, "I don't know."
"Well, let us just sit here then, no need for words," Alicia spoke softly.
A time passed, the stars ever slowly moving. "I feel I don't know who I am anymore. Being a soldier was all I knew." Scythe watched the stars, "Now two of my friends are dead, because of me."
"Scy," Alicia shortened his name in a motherly way, "I've lost people close to me as well. When I was an adventurer, I watched friends die. I somehow survived, I've never forgotten their names. Come I want to show you something."
Scythe followed Alicia behind the house, into a small fenced area. There were seven graves in this space. "These remind me of the friends I've lost, Zander as well." Alicia said, "we have both lost friends to monsters and dungeons."
"Why make them then?" Scythe asked
"Their names bounced inside my head, leaving me in a dark place." Alicia was honest, "After seeing them laid to rest like this, it helped. Not much, but it made a difference."
Scythe looked at each of the names. Alicia started talking "Sanya Drotterson, Rayla Halight, Taylok Titanis, Roduke Arihick, Cameron Westfold, Ruk Elderwood, and Silva and Solva Silverpelt. Each of them deserved better. Each of them were great people, always helping out the people who had no help."
"What happened?" Scythe asked
"A dungeon monster party, we were ambushed and trapped." Alicia stood up, "Zander and I barely made it out ourselves. They are most likely undead now."
"I'm sorry."
"You don't need to say anything, this was years ago." Alicia spoke, "There was nothing we could do against that monster."
"A monster? What was it?" Scythe asked
"We don't even know. There is nothing in any of the books that have any descriptions close to what it was." Alicia answered, "It was tall, at least twice your height. It moved both its legs and front arms. It showed up killing the other monsters, but when it looked at us it did nothing until Taylok attacked it in fear, it killed him with only a single attack with its tail."
"How did you get out?"
"I was injured," Alicia spoke, "I was barely moving, and Zander was watching over me. His sister stayed close to us as well. A few of us died in an instant. After it killed them it looked at us, and went off into the caves."
"Has anyone else ran into it?"
"Not that I've heard. It was like it was just a dream." Alicia said, "But I know I saw it grin."
"That's strange." Scythe thought to himself
"You know my past, I'm not asking you to share yours. Just know I know what it's like to fight a pyrrhic battle."
"A victory not worth its cost." Scythe thought back on his own experiences.
"We should head back in before we get sick." Alicia walked out of the graveyard.
Scythe followed, when they reached the door, Scythe spoke, "Thanks. I know you were trying to sleep."
"I was a little worried myself about you." Alicia opened the door, "call it women's intuition."
"Yeah, sure." Scythe went back to his room, sitting on his bed.
The next morning, instead of lunch, Scythe made breakfast. Zander and Alicia were roused by the smell. That day turned into a common thing, Scythe traded off making breakfast or dinner, while helping Zander build. This was the new normal for Scythe, but somethings never change and some scars never heal.
