I was in Captain America the first avenger, honestly,
my mind was torn between excitement and fear. Excitement because I could get the chance to see one of my favourite heroes. Fear because to talk to him, to talk to the captain, I had to join the war and I was as far from a soldier as anyone can be. I rubbed my Temple and looked at the newspaper in my hand.
Turns out the captain had been active for a few months now. The date was January the 2nd. I had power but not enough to contend against Hydra. plus in the end things turned out well. If I got the chance to see Steve rogers, I would shake his hand and pat his back but for now, I was staying as far away from the army as possible.
2 days later I found myself in an enrollment station for the army. Turns out living conditions in the 1940s were hard to adjust to for a 21st century millennial like me, who would have guessed? there was of course another interesting thing that pushed me to joining the army. The first time I bumped into someone in the busy streets of New York City, where I found out I was, I had skin to skin contact with him when he tried to help me up.
A green box display from what I assumed was the Omnitrix had appeared infront of me.
[Detected human DNA. Unable to copy due to host DNA being similar.]
That was about all it could do. I tried shouting, status, shop and many other gaming references but nothing worked. I was curious though if the Omnitrix could copy Captain Americas DNA. The army would provide me with a place to stay, food to eat and hopefully I'd get to meet with Captain America to see if my theory was correct. The sign up went along without any issues. I'd wizened up and changed my clothing to fit the time through some underhanded means. (stealing)
The general recourse was that we'd get trained for 2 months before getting shipped off to the war, in Europe. I'd never paid attention to history class so I didn't know which countries that war was getting fought on.
"Hello, I'm Tony. Tony whaller."
A guy, came and said to me while we were sitting in some benches outside.
"I'm Chris Wentworth. What a day huh?"
I said in a friendly manner. He sat down next to me and smiled.
"Yeah, I especially liked the nurses, they were very fancy. I'm from L.A by the way. Had to join the war some time. My grandpa was in the first world war."
I could tell he was very nervous and had probably approached me as I looked less intimidating than the others. I had a slight build, almost on the thin side and my height didn't help matters. I was 6,2, with black eyes and hair. My face could considered handsome if you were into guys with sharp chins. I kinda looked like Timothee Chalamet.
After talking for a while, the enrollment was complete and we moved out. What I wasn't expecting was to end up in Camp Lehigh, where Steve was trained. The camp was home to close to 200 recruits and the sleeping quarters were 10 dormitories each housing 20 people. My bunk was at the very end of the dormitory which provided me with a measure of privacy.
I needed to get stronger if I was to survive the war. After everyone was settled in for the night I looked deep within myself and felt for my powers. The body control powers were like a string dancing in the wind, the Omnitrix felt like a deep well with no end in sight and the world hopping powers felt like clusters of stars stretching out into infinity.
I instinctively knew how to control my powers, although the body control would need a lot more practice to build up precision.
Getting ahold of it, I directed it to increase the effectiveness as well as the amount of the growth hormones in my body to facilitate muscle development and strengthen the bones, although at a lesser degree, too much would cause health problems to anyone else but I was lucky my powers were handling most of the grunt work. I also did the same to the calcium regulating hormones and stopped at that.
I planned to make these minute changes over the course of the training program and hopefully by the end I would have a stronger body overall, at the cost of more food intake and some pain. A fair trade.
I dreamt that night about my family and woke up crying the next morning.
I hadn't had time to properly adjust to all the changes that had happened so my mood was very low during the day. The others noticed this and Tony tried to cheer me up but after the exhausting drills everyone was too worn out to care about anyone else but themselves.
That night I didn't experiment with my power but instead opted to do some self reflection. I missed my parents and even my little brother Edward. I had been so preoccupied with ending my suffering I didn't think of how my death would have affected them.
With the powers I had now, I knew I could go back in the future. All I had to do was get powerful enough. With newfound resolve I fell asleep and mentally prepared myself for the grind.
The rest of the week passed by in a flash and my body was looking slightly different from when I started. The little muscles I'd had were bigger and funnily enough my voice had changed slightly. It was deeper. This was probably due to increasing testerone in my body in conjunction with the growth hormone. At the start of the week, during exercise I used to lag behind and could not even do 10 pushups. But now I was at the middle of the pack.
My endurance was more due to increasing the effectiveness of the slow twitch muscles and my short range speed was faster due to doing the same for the fast twitch muscles. I could do 20-30 pushups now.
A week and a half later, I increased the volume of oxygen my lungs could take in and my stamina went through the roof. I was now one of the fastest recruits in the training camp and I could do 50 pushups on on hand. 100 and upwards on both. My progress was crazy and that attracted both bad and good attention.
A shorter chapter but I'll try to make future chapters longer.
