I pulled my phone from my pant's pockets and sped-dialed Gwen. "Hi, Gwen. Listen, I screwed up. Could you help me?"
What would I do without Gwen? When the drinks were done, I walked over to Ella's desk and gave her espresso. She looked at me like I forgot something. Amabel!
You really are stupid, Amabel. Ella got up from her chair and walked to the kitchen, took out another mug and made coffee, black, no sugar. Uhm, was there something wrong with her drink? Just when that question entered my mind, the elevator doors opened with a ping. She came walking out of the kitchen to greet Mr. Walker as she handed him the cup of coffee.
How did she do that?
"Good morning, ladies," Mr. Walker said and walked straight to his office. "Oh my gosh, Ella. I didn't know."
Ella smiled and tilted her head as if she said oh don't worry sweetie. "You're welcome," she whispered and nodded to Mr. Walker's office, telling me to go.
I knocked on his open door and then his eyes flickered up from his drawers to me. "Good morning, Mr. Walker. How was your night?" I didn't know what to say, how to stand, what to think or what to do. Follow your instincts.
"Ah, come in Miss. Avery. I had a good night and you?"
"Good thank you. So, what is my first assignment as your assistant?" He looked at me with a smile and stuck out his hand for me to sit in front of him as he sat on his chair behind his desk. "Well, let's start with your schedule, shall we?"
There I was, sitting with my new boss working out a schedule to fit my classes, studies and assignments. And the best part is, that I can take home the laptop and do my assignments on them. That way I don't have to go to the library and use their computers. I can do it in the comfort of my bed.
After we finished with my schedule for classes and things, I heard the telephone ringing on my desk. I snapped around and looked at it with big eyes and then turned back to face Mr. Walker. He smiled at me with confidence, took a deep breath to calm me and waved his hand to the phone, telling me to answer the phone.
I quickly made it over to the phone and answered, "Mr. Walker's office, Amabel speaking, how may I help you?" I think that went well.
"Yes, sir. And who might I ask is looking for an appointment?" I said opening the box Ella gave me, took a very beautiful, expensive looking pen and a yellow sticky notepad and started writing. "Ah, Mr. Conner for Tuesday at three-thirty sharp. Could you please give me your phone number, Mr. Conner? Uh-huh. Yes. Okay. Thank you, sir. I'll make sure he gets the message. Have a nice day. Thank you. Alright, bye."
The moment I put the phone down, I realised I held my breath the entire time. I felt like I was running a marathon. I sat down on my new office chair and opened my laptop. It feels strange saying my laptop. Well, I finished the startup and the installations when Ella came to my desk.
"Hey. Uhm, here are some documents on the restaurants and malls stock and payments. Also, the contractors' numbers are in there as well. When Mr. Walker is free, please give him this," Ella said, handing me three neatly placed stacks of documents. Ella is like me. We both are very neat and kind of perfectionistic. Who cares? We'll get the job done.
"Will do. Thanks, Ella." She gave a nodding smile and went back to her desk. I created my work account and it's like the laptop was exploding with emails. I looked around for a pen to start the schedule for this week and the next's appointments and meetings with Mr. Walker. Then, from the corner of my eye, I spotted the note for Mr. Walker.
I pulled it off and stuck it on the documents that needed Mr. Walker's attention and took it to him. When I came back to my office, I went to sit down and check my emails...
One week later...
"Gwen! Gwen, are you here?" I asked as I just came home. I had a long day and people are very rude over the phone. Like, hello, I just work there. I have orders too, you know. Whatever.
"Gwen!" I shouted again. Something is seriously not right. I went to her room. Just clean and neat like always. That's when I jumped like ten feet high when I heard something. Oh, right. Dinner.
I walk to the kitchen and just before I open the fridge I see a note from Gwen.
The note said,
I'm at the club. Oliver asked me to go. Join us? Just text me when you're at the door.
Love
-Gwen
I finally arrived at the club's front doors, confronted with the huge security guys. So, I text Gwen and let her know I'm at the front. After a few minutes, Gwen and Oliver came to my rescue. Or rather me to their rescue.
Like the last time I was here, the club is stuffed with people. But this time is different. Why was I expecting him? That gorgeous stranger. I don't even remember his name.
Being lost in my own fantasy of him, I spot Gwen at the bar with Oliver. I waddle my way through the crowd until I reach her, giggling and all. "Hey!" She greets me very friendly. Oh great. She's drunk...
"Hey!" I say back.
"Where have you been? Why are you spinning?" I turned to look at Oliver with my head tilted and gave him a half angry look. His smirk is washed off immediately. I think he's kind of afraid of me.
"Don't let her drink anymore, Oliver. I-" just when I wanted to talk further, my phone started buzzing in my back pocket. I take it out and see a text.
Amabel, get to the hospital now! It's your mom.
-Laurel
"Oliver, don't let her drink anymore. You're taking her home, I have to go. It's an emergency."
He looks at me worried then at Gwen and only answers, "Okay."
My whole world stops. What happened to Mom? Is she alright? As the thoughts of Mom being gone, I bump into someone. It's him.
