Waking up the next day, I brought up my status as I began to debate whether or not I should take the last mission on the mission board or wait for the refresh timer so easier missions would appear. Every time I thought of waiting, I remembered the reward of two Hero summonings.

Lily alone was amazing, and having two more like her would be even greater. The reward matched the danger, but the target and the description were vague. It did not specify 'killing,' only implying that I would be only able to give a good fight.

'I could be instantly killed if I'm not careful. Let's ask Apollo's opinion,' I thought. Turning towards Apollo, who was sleeping soundly on a pillow on my bedroom dresser, I wasted no time shaking him awake. When he did he let out an angry shout while floatinh up to my face.

"What?" His question was sharp, but it was hard to take someone the size of a Barbie doll seriously. I quickly spoke after pushing him away from my face.

"I wanted to know your opinion on the Hobgoblin mission" hearing my words Apollo seem to complete shake off his sleepiness as he spoke and gave a answer.

"To put it bluntly, you currently have a 40% chance of clearing the mission. However, if Lily joins you, it rises to 65%. If you want my advice, I would recommend either waiting or converting $500 into 50 gold so you can upgrade the mission board. At level 2, you get four missions instead of three, so you'll have another quest. If you're lucky, you should be able to get something to complete that quest, but that's only if you're lucky. So please think carefully before you act." Yawning at the end, Apollo floated away, leaving me in deep thought.

After considering his advice, I made my decision. I walked over to my bed, crouched down, and pulled out a small metal box. Inside, there was about $2,500.

[Conversion Complete]

Seeing the last 50 gold needed entered my inventory, I smiled and immediately upgraded the mission board. I then closed the lockbox and slid it back under the bed.

"30 minutes before it's done. Better go tell Lily," I thought. Exiting my room, I found Lily sitting on the couch, watching a TV show called "Pretty Little Liars." What is it about? I don't know. All I knew was that my mother in my past life liked it, and they had a female character named Spencer.

"Hey, Lily," I called, getting her attention. I explained the plan for the day, and she nodded before pausing her show. She then walked away to get changed, as she was currently in baggy blue jeans and an oversized T-shirt, neither of which were suitable for fighting.

30 minutes later

Seeing the mission board finished upgrading and a new mission option appeared I immeadirly got to reviewing it alongside Lily.

[Goblin Shaman Hunt]

[Description: A goblin has mastered the art of the arcane and is now leading its tribe on a bloody path, kill it and it's tribe members before their bloody practices spread]

[Target: kill Goblin shaman and its 20 Goblin subordinates]

[Reward: Basic Hero Summoning,2x Petty Exp Gem, 200 gold]

"A magic caster and double the amount of goblins we had to face last time. No wonder I'm getting a hero summoning. But Petty Exp Gems? What are those?" I wondered aloud. Deciding that this was less important, I accepted the quest after a bit of thinking. Once again, Lily and I found ourselves transported to the same forest as usual, with the sun beaming down above us.

The moment we appeared, Lily wasted no time taking out 3 of the 7 corpses she had left from the last mission to raise as her skeleton minions.

"Have one walk at the front and two at the back on either side. Try to stick close to me; this could go to hell quickly," I ordered, getting a nod from Lily, who promptly complied. We began moving through the forest, nerves on edge, as at any moment, a group of 20 goblins could jump out at us, or worse, the mage could shoot a fireball from our blind spot. Fortunately, none of that happened, and we calmly made our way through the forest toward our first encounter in the form of 3 goblins.

"[Battle Oath]" Wasting no time, I attempted to use my skill as I made the promise to 'kill two of the three,' which gave me a decent 20% stat boost, boosting my confidence. I stepped out with two of Lily's skeletons at my flanks as they began to circle the goblins, cutting off any means of escape.

"RAH UAH GAG!" One of the goblins seemed to order the others as they all turned around and attempted to flee in the direction of the skeletons, likely considering them the weak link. However, they were soon proven wrong. One goblin found a knife embedded in its hip, another lay writhing with an arm smashed by a club, and the last one found my axe embedded in his back. After finishing him off, I moved quickly to help the knife-wielding skeleton finish its opponent, who was still struggling heavily against the skeleton, now with a massive bunch of broken rib bones from the goblin's club.

[You have received 30 gold]

seeing the notification and watching my previously zero gold rise by 30, I felt eager to slay the mage. However, I did not let this show as I turned and began collecting the goblin corpses. Meanwhile, Lily went to inspect her skeleton, which now sported a handful of battle wounds, but nothing that would hamper its combat ability too much.

"Let's go," I said, deciding to leave the area that reeked of blood, worried that a group of goblins might come over from the commotion we created. That worry proved unfounded as we wiped out six more goblins in the following hour: one group of two and another group of four. They all died just the same. At some point, I began facing goblins head-on, the quality of my weapons doing much of the heavy lifting though I didn't care as long as the job got done.

"Good work lets take a break did you bring any snacks? I got some in my inventory if you want?" I spoke stopping in a small clearing near a set of rocks to rest lily's skeletons taking up position around the clearing to keep a eye out as both me and their master took a load off to snack on some chips and Gatorade.

"I wonder why our levels didn't increase? I killed like 13 goblins, and you about 7," Lily said, bringing my attention to this important topic. As she mentioned, my level is still one. Not wanting to overthink it, I called for Apollo, who, even though he wasn't with us initially, told me I could summon him by calling his name three times, kind of like Beetlejuice.

"What's up, Duke? Why did you call me?" Apollo asked, appearing in a flash of light. He floated before Lily and me, curiosity visible on his features.

"Why hasn't out levels increased yet? we killed some may goblins but nothing changed" I asked curious about the answer but the answer I got left me slightly disappointed.

"To put it simply, imagine you're in a tower. Currently, you're on level 1. You need to complete five missions on level 1 to move up to level 2. When you do so, your level will increase accordingly to match that floor. As you move higher and higher, your levels will increase to match it," Apollo explained. This meant the only power boost we would be receiving anytime soon would be from items and skill tokens, which wasn't bad per se, but it meant our growth would be slow and steady.

"That sucks. I guess my dream of raising a sea of undead will have to be put on pause. Well, I'm ready, just waiting on you, Duke," Lily said. She had heard Apollo's words and was visibly disappointed, but soon recovered as she stood up from the ground, completely rested.

"Alright let's continue on" Standing up I dusted myself off as we continued our hunt, but before we could move even 2 steps a noise caught my attention as I signaled Lily to stop as I went to check out where the noise was coming, but what I saw almost caused me to slap my self.

There was a goblin, but unlike its brethren, it had light, almost snow-white skin, covered by a dirty cyan robe that hung open. The goblin, which would normally strike fear into my heart, was busy taking a piss.

'Thank the higher powers,' was all I thought as I broke the one rule of men and attacked the goblin mage while it was still pissing.

[You have received 50 gold]

'Well that was anti-climatic' I though looking at the goblin whose head was now split open as it lay in a pool of its own blood, piss, and brain matter, the relief that I previously felt disappeared as the mission progress appeared in my vision.

[0/1] [11/20]

'That was not the goblin mage' This revelation caused a host of thoughts, but as if to answer my thoughts another screen appeared in front of me.

[Goblin Shaman Hunt]

[Description: A goblin has mastered the art of the arcane and is now leading its tribe on a bloody path, kill the mage its 5 apprentices and tribe members]

[Target:[0/1] [1/5] [10/15] ]

[Reward: Basic Hero Summoning,3x Petty Exp Gem, 350 gold]

Seeing the changes to the quest menu I was angry, but checking if the shaman had any nearby friends I wasted no time walking back to Lily who was also observing the mission details, but not waiting for her to speak I immeaditly called Apollo over who still hadn't left after being called by me.

"Apollo why did the mission details change!" I attempted to restrain my voice but it still came out as a shout as I looked at the fairy who seemed just as confused as me when reading the changes to the missions.

"I'm not sure. Mid-mission changes were only supposed to happen on the 10th floor when you're much more experienced," Apollo said, pulling up his own mission. As soon as he did, he went silent, his tone grim.

"Boss noticed it was getting too easy, so he made a couple of changes. You have exactly one hour to complete the quest before its difficulty is raised once more." Apollo's words caused me to move immediately. I began to jog in search of the last few goblins, followed closely by Emma, who had heard the same thing. Both of us cursed as we ran to find the remaining goblins.

The first group we found in our frantic hunt was a group of four goblins: two apprentices and two regular goblins. Though their were 2 apprentices It mattered little to me as I didn't slow down, while I took a club from a goblin and hurled it towards one of the apprentices, who I noticed began to cast what I could only assume to be a fireball.

BAM

When the club made contact with the apprentice's chest, it instantly caused the goblin to halt its casting, giving me enough time to come within range of the group. My axe already raised and being brought down on one of the normal goblins, which attempted to use its club to block. Unfortunately for it, my axe sliced easily through the goblin's wooden club and dug into the creature's flesh.

Pulling out my axe, I ignored the other club-wielding goblin and moved towards the apprentice, who still hadn't recovered from my thrown club. The other apprentice, however, had managed to react, and a light blue barrier coalesced around him and his comrades.

TING

The barrier proved sturdy, but under my crazed, almost frantic strikes, it showed many cracks, finally breaking when Lily's group of skeletons joined in to back me up, having already dealt with the other goblin.

[You have received 120 gold]

Not bothering with the corpse, Lily and I began another search for more goblins. Ten minutes later, we found the last three normal goblins, which I promptly killed alone before moving again in search of the final few apprentices and their master.

Eventually, we found them in a large clearing where we saw the final two apprentices and their master. Its appearance was menacing: almost as tall as me, with snow-white skin, blood-red eyes, and an open robe filled with a series of intricate tattoos that I swore glowed slightly.

"Lily, I need you to circle around with your skeletons and get ready to take out those apprentices," I instructed. I knew we didn't have much time for strategy, with only fifteen minutes left to dispatch the mage before the quest difficulty was raised once more. I also knew we needed to get rid of those apprentices because their magic shields would hinder us if they protected the boss while it attacked.

"HEY!" I stepped out and walked towards the mage with a swagger that didn't match my current fear. The goblin mage seemed to notice this as it smirked before raising its hand. Almost instantly, a giant ball of flame appeared above its hand, the glow almost replacing the sun in brightness.

'[Battle Oath]' At the sight of the massive fireball, I wasted no time using my one active skill and made the Oath of 'No Retreat,' an oath that gave me a massive 50% boost. This was both comforting and concerning, considering oaths scale off the power of the opponent and the difficulty of the oath.

I didn't have much time to think, though, as the ball of flame was hurled in my direction. I clumsily dodged out of the way, attempting to close the distance—something that might seem foolish, but considering the massive explosion that echoed behind me getting close was best to stop massive attacks like that from happening.

Sadly, I had to halt and throw myself to the side to dodge the attack from the two apprentices, who began to use magic to fire small rocks at a rapid rate, matching the speed of an average baseball player. However, due to the choreographed nature of the attacks, I found it quite easy to dodge, even without my enhanced stats

While I was busy dodging and weaving the attacks, the Goblin mage began to prep another fireball, taking its time. Although the fireball was not large, it felt much hotter than the first one. Not flinching, I felt my heart jump as I immediately dashed for the Goblin mage. Although its expression changed to confusion, it began to get ready to launch the spell towards me. However, it soon felt a sharp pain in its back as one of Lily's skeletons drove its blade into the mage's lower back.

BOOOOOOM

Losing focus for a moment was all it took for the Goblin mage to lose control of its spell, causing it to explode in the mage's hand. The blast instantly killed the poor skeleton and obscured the area in thick smoke, leaving the status of the mage and its apprentice unknown.

'They quest didn't complete' That was my final thought as the smoke cleared as my hand tightened on my axe.
