66.66% Stepmother to the Third Protagonist / Chapter 20: Present

章節 20: Present

Yang Liu returned home late that evening, arms full with a bag of sweets. She called out for Han Wei, who was in his room, "Come eat with me. How was school today?"

Han Wei appeared in the doorway, smiling as he replied, "It was good! I made two friends."

Curious, Yang Liu asked, "Who?"

He answered casually, "A girl named Jia Qian and a boy named Chao Feng."

Yang Liu nearly choked on the candy she was eating, eyes widening as she realized the names. Aren't those the protagonist and the second male lead? Her mind spun with the revelation, trying to process it all.

Seeing his stepmother struggling, Han Wei quickly rushed to grab a glass of water, offering it to her. She calmed down after taking a sip and looked at him, her concern still clear on her face. "Are you getting along with them?"

Han Wei, now reassured that his stepmother was fine, smiled and said, "I get along better with Chao Feng. Jia Qian can be kind of annoying sometimes."

Yang Liu sighed with relief and affectionately ruffled Han Wei's hair. "That's good. If Jia Qian's bothering you, just keep your distance. But stay close to Chao Feng, okay? Now, let's finish eating."

Han Wei nodded, satisfied with the conversation, while Yang Liu's mind raced. So Chao Feng and Jia Qian have already shown up… I thought this part wouldn't start for another nine years when Han Wei is about to graduate high school. She glanced over at Han Wei, who was blissfully eating his sweets, and silently vowed, I'll do everything I can to make sure my little Han Wei never falls for that witch in the future.

Later, after they'd both finished eating and Han Wei had returned to his room, Yang Liu took a shower and prepared for bed. She was just about to drift off when she heard a soft knock at her door.

"Come in," she called softly.

The door creaked open, and Han Wei peeked his head in. "Can I sleep with you, Mom?"

Yang Liu smiled, already growing used to him calling her "Mom," a habit he'd picked up just yesterday. "Of course," she replied warmly, pulling back the covers. Han Wei climbed into bed, dressed in his adorable dinosaur pajamas, and snuggled close to her as they both drifted off to sleep.

In the stillness of the night, another figure entered the house quietly. Han Chen, exhausted from his long trip, carefully made his way inside, trying not to make any noise. He slipped off his shoes at the door of his room and approached the bed. The sight before him stopped him in his tracks. Under the blankets, two forms were sleeping soundly—his wife and son, snuggled together.

Han Chen's heart softened at the sight. I've never seen him sleep like this before, he thought, a mixture of surprise and sadness washing over him. Memories of his ex-wife flooded back—how she had never let him get close to their son because, in her eyes, he looked too much like Han Chen himself. She always believed that their resemblance would only remind her of me, and that was something she couldn't bear.

He sighed, memories of the past briefly surfacing as he studied their peaceful faces. Yang Liu's hair was a messy tangle of black strands, and Han Chen chuckled softly to himself at the sight.

Deciding to take a quick shower, he moved quietly to avoid disturbing them.

After freshening up, Han Chen returned to the room, recalling how Yang Liu had mentioned it would be fine if he slept there. But just as he was about to slip into bed, something on the bedside table caught his eye—a small brown box with his name on it: "For Han Chen."

Curiosity piqued, Han Chen opened the box to find a gray tie neatly folded inside. He stared at it, puzzled, before glancing over at Yang Liu. She bought this for me?

His thoughts wandered for several minutes as he contemplated the unexpected gift. Finally, he closed the box, set it back on the table, and climbed into bed beside his family, feeling a strange warmth settle over him. As he drifted into sleep, his mind was filled with thoughts of Yang Liu, Han Wei, and the new dynamic that seemed to be forming in their lives.
