We stayed hidden in the trees for hours. The droids were persistent, scouring the ground below like hunters searching for wounded prey, their mechanical voices echoing through the jungle as they scanned the area. But they didn't look up. We had the high ground, and for now, that was keeping us alive.
Lucky was slumped against the thick trunk of the tree, his breathing shallow but steady. The shrapnel wound in his side was getting worse, and I could see the strain in his eyes. Spark was on watch, peeking through the leaves, making sure the droids hadn't moved closer.
I sat with my back against the tree, trying to come up with a plan. We couldn't stay here forever. The longer we waited, the more dangerous our situation became. The droids might call in more reinforcements, or worse, the jungle itself might turn on us. Felucia was alive in more ways than one, and the wildlife was just as deadly as the droids.
But then, through the sound of the jungle, something strange reached my ears. A faint clicking, like claws scraping against bark. It was coming from above us, high in the canopy.
I gestured for Spark to stay quiet and peered up into the thick, green foliage. At first, I couldn't see anything, just a blur of shifting leaves and shadows. But then, I saw it—a creature, massive and reptilian, with glowing eyes that flickered in the dim light.
A Felucian acklay. One of the most dangerous predators on the planet.
Before I could react, the creature let out a screeching roar and leaped down from its perch, landing on the branch just above us. Its claws dug into the bark, and it snapped its massive pincers, clearly agitated by our presence.
"Move!" I shouted, pushing Lucky and Spark off the branch as the acklay lunged toward us.
We scrambled down the tree, the bark tearing at my gloves as I slid down as fast as I could. The acklay was right behind us, its massive form shaking the branches as it followed. I could hear the others shouting, blasters firing, but the creature was too fast, too agile in its home terrain.
As we reached the lower branches, I realized we were running out of tree. The droids were still below us, and if we went down, we'd be caught between them and the acklay. We were trapped.
Unless…
A plan formed in my mind—risky, reckless, but it might work. I glanced at the others and shouted, "Keep going! Don't stop!"
Without waiting for their response, I turned back toward the acklay, my heart pounding in my chest. The creature was closing in, its glowing eyes locked on me. I raised my blaster, but I didn't fire. Instead, I aimed at one of the thick vines hanging from the upper branches.
"Come on, you kriffing monster," I muttered under my breath.
At the last second, as the acklay lunged, I fired. The blaster bolt severed the vine, sending it whipping down from above. I grabbed hold of the falling vine and swung myself off the branch, just as the acklay's claws slashed through the air where I had been.
The creature let out a furious screech, but it was too late. The force of my swing carried me away from the tree, and I let go of the vine, crashing into the ground below, just as the acklay, disoriented by its own momentum, plummeted through the branches and crashed into the droid patrol beneath us.
The sound of metal and flesh colliding was deafening. The droids were caught off guard, and the acklay, in its rage, tore through their ranks with terrifying ferocity. Blaster fire erupted as the droids tried to defend themselves, but the acklay was relentless, smashing through their lines like a living battering ram.
Lucky and Spark joined me at the base of the tree, staring in disbelief as the droids and the acklay tore each other apart.
"Did you… did you just use an acklay as a weapon?" Lucky asked, his voice incredulous.
I shook my head, trying to catch my breath. "More like… I used it as a distraction."
Spark let out a shaky laugh, clapping me on the shoulder. "You're insane, Sarge. But that was the most karking insane thing I've ever seen."
The battle between the droids and the acklay continued, giving us just enough time to slip away into the jungle. I could still hear the creature's roars behind us, but for the first time since the battle had started, I felt like we had a chance.
Hours later, when we had finally put enough distance between ourselves and the droids, we collapsed in a small clearing, exhausted but alive.
Lucky chuckled, wincing as he clutched his wounded side. "Sarge, I think you've earned yourself a nickname after that stunt."
Spark nodded, grinning beneath his helmet. "Yeah. You just swung on a vine and dropped a killer beast on a droid army. I think 'Vine' suits you."
"Vine?" I repeated, half-laughing, half-shaking my head. "You're serious?"
"As serious as you were about fighting a droid army with a giant lizard," Spark said, grinning wider. "It fits."
I couldn't argue with that. And as we sat there, catching our breath, the nickname started to grow on me.
"Alright," I said, leaning back against a tree. "Vine it is."
