As Yang watched the man training with the heavy sword, she couldn't help but be in awe of the power he was generating. She doubted that even under ideal conditions, she could create a single dust cloud with her swings. Yet this man was able to do it repeatedly with ease.
Ruby was also deep in thought as she gazed out the window. 'This will be a long four years… maybe it won't be so bad. Come on, optimism,' Ruby thought, putting on a small smile.
On the grounds of Beacon, Guts looked up as the ships landed and began unloading their passengers. He made a mental list of the first-year students he believed were worthy of passing the initiation. He was shocked when the first ship took off again, showing it was empty. Only a few people had made it onto his list.
As the second transport landed, Guts watched as the passengers disembarked, calculating that about eight had potential. One, in particular, stood out to him, and only one person met his criteria for passing - the only one who passed his inspection. He traced the name on his list to find out who this person was. And when he did, Guts couldn't help but smile.
This person was here at Beacon with the headmaster's recommendation, and Guts could tell they deserved it. However, he knew that he would have to narrow down the list to a manageable number of students for the class, even if he didn't want to.
'I'll need to have a word with Ozpin after this,' Guts thought as he stood up and headed towards the headmaster's office.
Unfortunately, he was forced to turn around when he heard an explosion in the distance. 'Are you kidding me? Not even five minutes, and things are already going off?!' Guts muttered to himself as he rushed back toward the noise source.
As Ruby lay on the ground after being abandoned by her sister, she couldn't help but feel that nothing was going according to plan. She had been chewed out by a cute, snow-haired girl and saved by someone else, only to be left alone again.
But at least she wasn't being bombarded for taking down Torchwick. Ruby sighed and muttered, "Welcome to Beacon."
From a distance, Guts watched as Ruby and another girl named Pyrrha Nikos stood out to him as the ones with the most potential to pass the initiation.
Everyone else was uncertain, but Guts could tell just by how these two girls held themselves that they would pass quickly. However, upon closer inspection, it was clear that Pyrrha was here as a way to test herself, a personal challenge.
But Ruby was different. Guts could tell that she was here for another reason. Without even knowing her file, he knew that Ruby was strong. She was the first person at Beacon, besides the headmaster, to have power innately.
Guts had seen other people do it before, but he also knew it was a conscious effort for them. On the other hand, Ruby does it all the time without even trying. Guts might have even mistaken Ruby for Griffith if it weren't for their opposite personalities.
As Guts was pulled out of his thoughts by Ozpin's announcement, he refocused and made his way to the speech. He listened from the back, standing against the wall.
As Ozpin finished his speech, Glynda stepped forward, her voice stern and commanding. "Now, students, I suggest you get ready for bed. The test will begin tomorrow, and you will need to be well-rested," she announced.
As the students began to make their way to the ballroom, Guts approached Glynda with a determined expression. "Please follow the students to your bunk, sir," she instructed.
But Guts was not so easily deterred. "I need to speak with the headmaster," he insisted.
His voice was firm and resolute, leaving no room for argument. Glynda hesitated for a moment, clearly taken aback by his determination. But eventually, she relented and gestured for Guts to follow her.
Glynda led Guts to an elevator, her expression grave. "Please come back down immediately. Your room key will not work, and you will have to sleep here," she instructed him sternly.
Guts nodded, fortunate not to have any belongings left in his room. He stepped into the elevator and rode it to the headmaster's office. When he arrived, he found Ozpin sitting in his chair, gazing out at the night sky. "Beautiful night, isn't it?" Ozpin asked, his voice calm and collected.
"I'm not much for stargazing unless I'm feeling sentimental," Guts replied gruffly. Ozpin turned around in his chair to face Guts. "So, what did you want to talk about?" he asked, his expression serious.
Guts tossed his notes onto the desk with a thud. "What the hell do they teach in the combat schools?" he asked, his voice laced with frustration. "Unfortunately, that is not under our jurisdiction," Ozpin replied, his voice laced with regret. "Well, it should be. I found only about eight people who I can guarantee will survive initiation. And six barely meet the minimum requirements for me to pass them. The class is cannon fodder, Oz. Fodder!" Guts exclaimed, his anger palpable.
Ozpin raised a hand in a calming gesture. "I highly doubt it's that bad," he said, trying to downplay the situation. "No, it's worse. But I know you won't fail an entire class, so I narrowed it down to a list of 20," Guts said, his voice full of resignation.
"Candidates?" Ozpin asked, hopeful that Guts had found some promising students. "Deaths," Guts said coldly as he handed over a list of names.
"Remove these people from the ceremony, or by tomorrow's end, you'll be sending letters home to parents with their kids in body bags," Guts warned, his voice full of contempt.
He turned and headed towards the elevator, his mission accomplished. "Is there anyone you can give positive reviews about?" Ozpin asked solemnly, not wanting to give up on any of his students.
Guts paused, considering his words carefully. "One..." he said before turning and leaving the room. Ozpin sighed, feeling the weight of the situation on his shoulders. He'd have to go with his original plan and hope that Ruby survives.
Ozpin reached for his intercom and paged Glynda. "Yes, headmaster?" she answered promptly. "You've got several people to send home before dawn rises," Ozpin said, his voice heavy with sadness. He heard Glynda curse under her breath before she replied. "Understood, sir," she said.
