CHAPTER START---
---Hokage's office, 8 AM...
"Are you clear on what you need to do?" Tsunade asks Jin, the young man currently standing battle-ready in front of her.
"Yeah, track down the Akatsuki that attacked the temple before they leave our borders, do I need to get a team?"
"No, the 20 ninja platoons will be assigned to this because of how large the search area is, you can fall in with them, you're the most capable fighter we have so I'd prefer if you were the one to engage the enemy."
"Got it, anything else."
"No that should be it, they'll be assembled on the roof in 5 minutes, let's go..."
Now standing beside Tsunade and Shizune on the rooftop, the Hokage finishes addressing the 20 platoons regarding the mission.
"Your goal is to capture, but these enemies are dangerous..."
As her words go on and on repeating things he already knows, he can't help but keep looking at Asuma and Shikamaru.
'If I deal with Kakazu then Asuma will have to deal with a cornered and desperate Hidan, if he goes down Shikamaru will probably be next, Karin is ready in case something happens to Shikamaru so that's covered, I don't really need to worry about anyone else...right?'
He looks through the teams, Ino and Choji are also standing in line behind their captain, he gives Choji a small wave as the boy glances his way, just in time for Tsunade to put all eyes on him.
"Jin will be working alongside all of you, the moment you make contact you WILL signal for him before you engage, should the enemy be too much for you then his location is the safe point, understand?"
"YES HOKAGE!" they all confirm in one voice.
"Good, dismissed!" with a wave of her hand all but Shizune and Tsunade disappear from the rooftop.
Quickly catching up to Asuma's team, he finds them on a rooftop close to Kurenai's apartment having a small briefing. With deft movements he lands silently beside them, none of them notice him until he makes himself known.
"Hey," he casually waves at them.
"Jin, you're coming with us?" Asuma asks.
"Yeah, figured if it's a mystery case the team with this guy will solve it first," he points at Shikamaru, the boy groans in response.
"Hm, good point, anything you need to know before we head out, if combat breaks out Shikamaru takes command in a standard single strike formation..." Asuma gives a brief rundown for the newcomer.
"Hmm, yeah, I've been looking into the Akatsuki, I can't really give any info in case something happens and you encounter them without me being there, but I've got some very sparse info on the more well-known members, if I recognize them I'll call out what I know, overloading you now might cause you to rush in confident against the wrong person if we get separated so always be cautious, they're all monster," his words had a seriousness that Asuma and Shikamaru had never felt from him before, they better understood what they were up against already.
"Got it, our first stop is the temple to ask around, let's go," Asuma says before they all flicker away, all but Jin.
For a moment he stays behind, returning a small wave to Kurenai as she quietly wishes them good luck from her window. Thankfully she was too far to see the sad smile on his face, he couldn't face her right now knowing what comes next.
Catching up to Asuma's team, Jin falls into step as they sprint through the trees.
"What kept you?" Asuma asks as he leads the pack.
"Kurenai wanted to wish us good luck," his voice as empty as his words reach Asuma, the man can't help but smile at the thought of the woman.
Hours later they arrive at the temple, the massive gates completely destroyed and the sacred grounds ruined.
"Wow, they really messed this place up..." he mutters while looking around, it isn't lost on him how sacred this place is after seeing the work that was put in to build it. Ornate symbols and patterns are carved into the stone structure of the cliff it's built into.
"Do you feel anyone nearby?" Shikamaru asks, receiving a disappointing headshake from his friend.
"Guess we didn't luck out huh, what a drag..."
As they investigate the area, they finally put the pieces together, figuring out that the Akatsuki were only after the bounty, whipping out a map they easily find the nearest cash-in point and signal the other teams to lay in wait at the other spots before preparing to leave.
"You need to be careful fighting them, these men are deranged and dangerous, remember that," the monk warns Asuma, only receiving a soft smile in return.
"Don't worry about us Chiruku was worth 40 million, but I'm worth 5 million more than that, so they won't take me down without a good fight at least, and I'm not alone, my team's here," he gestures at his two teammates and Shikamaru," plus that brat's worth 120 Million, damn overachiever..." he grumbles while pointing at Jin who was still observing some of the statues nearby.
"The child?" the monk asks in a bit of disbelief.
"Trust me, he's a real monster when he fights, at least that what his sensei tells me..." Asuma says quietly while looking at the redhead casually approaching them now, a wide smile on his face without a care in the world.
