章節 7: Floodgates to the heart...

It seemed to Aman's tormented heart that everything and everyone in the universe was determined to oppose every dear wish of his. After an exhaustive session with kaki-maa, now it was his security adviser's turn. Not only was he denied the car all to himself, but he was also stopped from going out without his guards. "It is sheer madness and in the foreign soil too!"- said the Major.

"Don't fret yourself." – said Aman. "I'll be safe in an old convertible. No one can guess who's in there." Aman argued

"I'll drive you myself. We'll have two plain-clothed men in a car following us. This is the least I can do for you." – barked the Major.

"For God's sake, spare me the drama!" Aman screamed. "I said I need a simple car and sometimes all to myself. Is it asking for too much?"

"Yes, it is for the man who would soon be running for the position of Vice President of America. It is my duty to protect you. I cannot let you alone."

Aman could not help but smirk, "What airs we give ourselves! Surely, you do not presume that Major. You and I are nothing without our badges on our coats. So let me have my car."

Anmol happened to arrive at this interesting point to catch the gist of the matter. "Here," he interrupted, "Take my keys. The car is tinted and bulletproof. If you don't step out of it, you'll be safe. Turn on the GPS, it will help you navigate the roads."

The Major gave him his mobile phone. "Keep this with you so that we get real-time data of where you are and if you see anything suspicious, please press the red button on the top right corner."

Aman consented and drove himself out of the gloom of the house. Fresh air brought a fresh perspective and a fresh and indomitable desire to be with her again. He had no premeditated destination to go to. Therefore, he let his heart guide the wheels while he pondered on all that his kaki-maa had said. It was indeed a perplexing situation. No matter from what angle he saw it, wisdom always lay heavy on caution. Frustrated and defeated he resigned himself to fate. "Tell me what should I do!" he called out to heaven.

But, fate had already charted out his path: his heart was already walking on it. It took him to Myra's house. When he realized where he was, a sharp pang seized him and the fangs of his desire gripped him and tormented him until he submitted. Love overwhelmed his senses once again and led him to her doorstep and his heartbeat louder than the ringing doorbell.

The sharpness of the ringing bell threw her heart into the throes of frenzy. It was beating heavily and threateningly. Fear gripped her limbs and she was momentarily paralyzed. She was standing near her window from where she could have a view of her garden. She saw Aman walk in. She tried to calm herself down, knowing well enough his arrival will soon be announced and she will be required to go down. She summoned courage and with a calm fortitude of a fallen warrior went downstairs to meet him.

He was shown to the visitor's parlour. She found him standing near the window looking out at the plush and recently manicured garden. She had often lived this moment in her mind but they were nothing like the one she was about to witness. The room was well lit by the sunbeams entering through the French windows on either side of the room. It complemented his handsome figure which looked angelic in the sunlight. "Is he human?" – she wondered, "Has he really come to confront me?"

She advanced in trepidation and stood a little away from him. He was aware of her presence but waited until he could tranquillize the overwhelming waves of emotions that were threatening to engulf him and all others who came in its way.

By and by, he abandoned his struggle for self-control. He could not help being himself with her. Besides, why should he hide his suffering from her? Why not show her the deep gashes he has endured? He turned to her – vulnerable and exposed. Every muscle in his face narrated the story of his misery. She could see the dark blue vein peeping out of his forehead. His torment quailed her heart and she let out a cry of horror.

Her guards fell instantly and she hugged him and sobbed against his heart. She apologized profusely and explained how it was not her fault; that, she was persuaded against her will. How she longed to talk to him, to have any news of him. How many letters she had written and how bitterly disappointed she became when they were unanswered.

"I had never forgotten you, not even once, but I had learned to live without you." –she sank in his arms and they sobbed collectively, well aware of the grave injury done to them by others.

Tears did not stop, the floodgates to the store well of her sorrow once thrown open, allowed years of anguish and misery to flow out and make way for the impending happiness. When she had cried the last drop of painful tears, her heart was empty of all negativity. A cold wave of joy-filled in. Slowly but surely they became aware of their immeasurable love for each other and that was all there was to know.

They spent hours wrapped up in each other's arms. They had met in the twilight when the past merges with the present. It is the most difficult stage for nature and certainly the most difficult time in human life. But when this transition is smooth and all the exhaustion of the hectic colour dissipates-- calm and peace prevail. The night is always calm. Its goddess visits all the blistered souls to embalm them with her ethereal touch. Calm had befallen them too.

Myra rose up and opened the window. She took his hand in hers and stepped out into the garden. The air was fragrant with the scent of various flowers, became more luxuriant when it brought to him her perfume. He had waited sixteen years for this fragrance; sixteen years to be able to hold her hand again and look at the stars. Fate had brought them together again and then he took the hint well. He would walk the path of his heart.

Their hearts rejoiced at this blessing. Gods had sanctioned their love, now man must conform.
