章節 268: Chapter 269: Evolution of Combee

After finishing dinner, Rex, feeling a bit bored, turned on the TV and began casually flipping through channels, hoping to find a show that caught his interest.

Suddenly, a piece of news caught his attention. On the screen, it was announced that Steven, the champion of the Hoenn region, had officially stepped down, and his successor was none other than Wallace, a top Coordinator Trainer.

Rex could foresee that during Wallace's tenure as the League Champion, there would be an explosive growth in Coordinator Trainers within the Hoenn region.

After all, with even the League Champion being a Coordinator Trainer, the role model effect would be immense. Wallace would surely spare no effort in promoting this, aiming to expand the ranks of Coordinators.

Of course, none of this had much to do with Rex. He was just a small farm owner and only needed to worry about his farm's matters.

"Hey, boss, when did you come back? Why didn't you let us know in the backyard?"

At that moment, the three who had been diligently tending to the backyard came in, chatting and laughing. Yuli, upon seeing Rex sitting on the sofa watching TV, asked in surprise.

"When I came back, I saw you were all busy with the backyard, so I didn't want to disturb you. By the way, I've already made dinner, so go wash up, and we can eat soon!"

Rex snapped out of his thoughts about Wallace becoming the Hoenn Champion and smiled as he spoke to the group.

"Well then, tonight we get to taste the boss's cooking!"

Karen said excitedly. Ever since she came to the farm, she hadn't seen Rex cook, so she was eager to try his food.

"Wow, boss, your cooking has really improved lately!"

Yui said in surprise. She had tasted Rex's food before—it wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't as good as it was now. Yui thought tonight's meal could even rival her own cooking.

"Yes, it's delicious!"

Karen, full of appreciation, said while nodding. Yuli, sitting next to her, also smiled and nodded in agreement.

Seeing that everyone was pleased with his cooking, Rex felt happy and shared with them everything that had happened throughout his day.

When the group heard that Jade Moon Lake led straight to the sea, they became very interested. And when Rex mentioned a scenic bay and beach nearby, their eyes lit up with excitement.

Yuli and the others looked at Rex with anticipation, which he naturally understood. He then agreed to find a time to take them to the beach for a vacation.

Since the beach was located deep within the wilds of Petalburg Woods, it could be treated as a private beach. Moreover, most of the wild Pokémon living in the bay had already been subdued by Milotic's majesty, so Rex wasn't worried about any danger.

The group thoroughly enjoyed their dinner and decided to head to the beach after Yuli, Karen, and Yui finished tidying up the backyard garden. For now, they wanted to focus on the garden.

Rex didn't mind. He could go to the beach anytime he liked.

In the following days, Yuli, Karen, and Yui indeed dedicated most of their time to organizing the backyard, though they didn't neglect their other duties. The backyard now had the shape of a proper garden, though it hadn't been planted yet.

Each of them wanted to plant different types of flowers, but they had already ordered the seeds online. Once the seeds arrived, they would start sowing.

Meanwhile, Rex focused his attention on Combee. He didn't want to miss the moment when Combee evolved into Vespiquen. Unlike most Pokémon, Combee's evolution was a rare sight, as only one female Combee in each hive could evolve.

It was a bit disappointing, though—Combee showed signs of evolving but just couldn't complete the process. Thanks to the excellent food it was getting, its body had grown a bit larger.

Rex seriously suspected that the Combee in front of him was intentionally holding back from evolving just to continue enjoying his meals. He was very familiar with this Combee's gluttony.

This Combee didn't even bother gathering nectar anymore, spending all its time in the hive, eating Pokéblocks when hungry and sipping honey when thirsty, living a very comfortable life.

Of course, this was all just Rex's speculation. He had never raised a Vespiquen before, so he didn't know if Combee was actually building up energy for its final evolution.

Thus, Rex didn't interfere much with Combee's actions, simply observing it and hoping it would surprise him.

One day, Rex visited the hive like he usually did, bringing along some Pokéblocks and fresh berries for Combee.

Normally, Combee would have flown over to him before he even reached the hive, but today, there was no movement at all, which Rex found odd.

When he entered the hive, he noticed that none of the Combee had gone out to gather nectar. Instead, they were standing guard in small groups within the hive. Upon seeing him, they instinctively tried to stop him but then recognized who he was and returned to their positions.

As Rex reached the deepest part of the hive, he found Combee lying on the ground again. This time, however, its face showed no signs of pain, and it was fully conscious.

Combee tried to flap its wings and fly upon seeing Rex, but despite its efforts, it couldn't lift itself off the ground.

"Alright, Combee, don't push yourself!"

Seeing that it couldn't fly, Rex quickly stopped its attempts and knelt down to check its condition.

After observing for a while, Rex realized that Combee had grown even larger, making its small transparent wings incapable of supporting its body weight.

Suddenly, Combee's body began to emit a white light, but it quickly faded.

This behavior told Rex that Combee was on the verge of evolution. If nothing went wrong, it would evolve very soon.

After some thought, Rex placed the Pokéblocks and berries in front of Combee, letting it decide whether to eat. He wasn't sure if Combee needed more energy for its evolution.

Without hesitation, Combee started eating the food voraciously. Whether it was out of gluttony or a need to gather more energy for evolution, Rex couldn't tell.

As time passed, Combee steadily ate through the food, while the frequency of the white light flashing from its body increased.

When Combee finished the last berry, its entire body was enveloped in a bright light, and this time, the light didn't fade—it was clear the evolution had begun.

The other Combee, excited by this sight, gathered around the glowing figure, clearly celebrating the birth of their queen.

Soon, a Vespiquen over a meter long appeared. It could now fly, supported by two pairs of wings instead of just one, effortlessly lifting itself into the air. (End of chapter)
