"It's brighter now. It's finally not so scary."
As Mia looked at the dark forest that had suddenly brightened, she said happily, but the next moment, she noticed something was off and looked at Gary.
"What's wrong with your Charmander? Charmanders are extremely rare in the wild near Viridian City, you know that... and the Professor's Charmander is in Pallet Town," she said.
"I don't know how to respond to that," Gary replied. "This Charmander was really caught by me. It's true that Charmanders are extremely rare in this area, but it doesn't mean that trainers can't catch them, right? Is it so strange that I managed to catch one?"
Gary wasn't surprised by Mia's reaction. In fact, he would have been surprised if she hadn't reacted that way. But he could only say that he caught the Charmander himself. After all, its true origin was from the system, and there was no way he could tell Mia that Charmander was a gift from an unknown source. Even if he did, she wouldn't believe it.
"You're not kidding me, are you? You really caught it?" Mia asked, still skeptical.
"Of course I caught it. Do you think Charmander just threw itself into my arms? I wouldn't dare to pick it up; I'd be worried about being burned by the fire on its tail. But if it were you who threw yourself into my arms, I wouldn't dare do that either," Gary teased, hoping to steer Mia away from the topic. If she persisted, things might become complicated.
"You've got a slick tongue, but you're amazing. Not only did you encounter a Shiny Magikarp, but you also found a Charmander, one of the original Pokémon. But to be honest, I still don't believe it. After all, the odds of finding an original Pokémon in the wild are almost zero since they're usually kept by research labs. There are very few in the wild. It's incredible that you found one."
Mia still had doubts, but she couldn't figure out where Gary's Charmander came from, so she had no choice but to believe him.
Gary wasn't surprised by Mia's reaction. After all, they had grown up together, and he knew Mia well. Although she was timid, her analytical skills were top-notch. If Charmander hadn't been assigned by the system, Mia would have figured out its true origin and found a flaw.
"Now that we have a light source, let's go. But why are you so sure I would stay?" Mia asked, suddenly curious.
"I wouldn't call it certainty," Gary replied with a slight smile. "I just thought that with your stubbornness, you wouldn't want to go home without accomplishing anything. So, I provoked you a little."
Mia was irritated but understood that if Gary hadn't provoked her, she might have chosen to return instead of continuing.
"By the way, are there many Pokémon like Caterpie and Weedle in Viridian Forest?" Mia asked as they ventured deeper into the heart of the forest.
"Why are you asking such a basic question? Of course, there are plenty of Caterpie and Weedle in Viridian Forest," Gary responded, surprised by the question. But after thinking it over, he understood her concern and teased, "Don't tell me you're afraid of them?"
"Who… who's afraid? I… I was just asking!" Mia stammered, her voice betraying her unease.
"I won't tease you anymore. There are indeed a lot of Caterpie and Weedle in Viridian Forest, but not all of them are..." Gary trailed off as he noticed something ahead. A trace of helplessness flashed in his eyes. "No way, did I just jinx us?"
"Why'd you stop talking?" Mia asked, patting his shoulder. But then, she spotted a green figure crawling on the ground. "Aah! Caterpie!"
"No way, are you serious?" Gary said, exasperated.
Mia was clinging to him, her legs wrapped around his waist and her hands gripping his neck.
"You're talking like it's no big deal. They're so scary, but you're not afraid at all. You're like a monster," Mia grumbled.
"Okay, okay, you win. But can you get down now? Don't you think this position is a bit awkward?" Gary sighed.
Realizing the compromising position she was in, Mia's face turned bright red like a ripe Cheri Berry.
"Why didn't you say something earlier? This is so embarrassing!" she exclaimed, quickly getting off Gary.
"You're really something, blaming me when you were the one who clung to me out of fear," Gary said, shaking his head.
The atmosphere became tense, and the two of them fell silent as they continued on.
"It's all your fault, Charmander. Use Scratch!" Gary finally broke the silence, directing his frustration at the unsuspecting Caterpie.
Caterpie was just minding its own business when suddenly, it was attacked. Charmander's Scratch hit it squarely, knocking it out.
"Ding!"
"Charmander defeated a level 5 Caterpie and gained 50 experience."
"Charmander's level has increased to level 2."
Gary was initially stunned by the system notification but quickly broke into a smile.
