章節 23: Chapter 23

Once again, Bob faced a trainer.

Now, it was the second wall of defence.

"So, are you here to challenge Bugsy?" The girl asked, throwing a pokéball, "No way you're passing me,"

"Pineco!" The bug-type cried, making itself known.

Bob threw in his own battler.

"Geodude," Geodude was not very injured from his last bout, so it seemed okay to let him fight again.

"Rock Throw,"

"Protect yourself, Pineco!"

"Pine!" A glowing screen formed in front of the bug-type, just in time for the rock to smash into it.

'Hmm,' Bob thought, before speaking, "Rollout,"

"Dude," The rock-type said, rolling forward.

"Damn it!" The enemy trainer exclaimed, "Hit back with Rapid Spin,"

The bug-type replied with a horizontal rotation, spinning wildly in one place, before zooming forward towards the lumbering rock.

BASH!

Both pokémon flew back.

Geodude looked fine, eager for the second Rollout.

Pineco also looked fine, waiting for the next move.

'Geodude in a Rollout,' Bob thought, watching Geodude roll again, 'should be double now,'

"Pineco, use Rapid Spin again!"

BOOM!

The exchange was the same, as both combatants found themselves glaring at each other.

Geodude had a few bruises on his rocky skin, but made no complaint of it.

Pineco, however, was trying to hold itself up, it's beady eyes blinking from the pain.

"Hold in there, Pineco," The girl said, looking at the enemy rock-type, "When it uses Rollout, use Rapid Spin again!"

Bob stared with curiosity, 'Guess I'll have to wait until Geodude's out of the Rollout,'

When Geodude rolled away again, Bob had a number in his head.

'One hundred and twenty,'

"Pineco!" The bug-type countered by dashing forward, spinning.

Another collision.

This time, Pineco was not fairing well.

It could be taken out with another Rollout.

'Two hundred and forty,'

"Geo," The rock-type begun its fourth consecutive roll, heading with an unwavering enthusiasm.

"Use Protect!" The girl ordered with urgency.

The bug-type did so, creating a screen in between itself and its foe.

Geodude bounced off the shield like a ping-pong ball off a bat.

'Four hundred and eighty,'

He recovered shortly and sped off, flinging dust in Bob's face.

"Protect, now," Just like last time, Pineco hid behind another screen.

BASH!

Bob watched as the final run had ended with no good result.

Pineco, despite injured, was still awake.

"Use Take Down, Pineco," The girl said.

"Pine..." The bug-type groaned, flying forward.

"Rock Throw,"

Before Pineco could attack, a large boulder smashed into it, sending it the other way.

The bug-type's last bit of energy had been sapped out.

"I'm not done yet!" The girl said as she returned Pineco and brought out the next defender, an Ariados.

Bob did the same.

"Quilava!" Guts was ready to kick some butt, his feet hopping on the spot and his eyes on his foe.

"Guts, Swift,"

"Hide underground with Dig, Ariados!"

"Dos!" The bug-type swiftly creeped into the ground.

The stars bounced off the floor around the hole, vibrating as they went.

'Guess even a never missing move can be dodged,' Bob thought, thinking of the overpowered move, "Guts, Ember, but charge it,"

"Quil!" The fire-type did, his mouth inflating.

"Hit him with Sucker Punch, Ariados,"

In that instant, the bug-type jumped out of the ground, with one of its legs oozing a dark aura.

BOOM!

The attack pulverised Guts, sending his head flying to the right.

However, the fire-type snapped back with an angered glare.

"Ariados, Double Team,"

His flame blast went off like a railgun, lighting the battlefield aflame.

When the shot ended, Ariados was uninjured.

In fact, there were two.

Each hopping on the spot, ready to lash out.

'There is only one,' Bob decided to act, "Smokescreen,"

That attack that left a bruise on Guts' face made him a bit mad, so he wasted no time in setting up the smoke.

"Ariados, Swords Dance,"

The bug-type began to move around in a dancing motion, two swords illuminating around it.

'She's probably going to use Sucker Punch again,' Bob thought, tapping the pokéball he now held in his hand, "Guts, Flame Wheel,"

When he heard this, Guts felt something else. He looked at Bob, then at the cloud of smoke.

It was something that was caught by his instincts like a fish to the bait of a fishing line.

There was more to those three words.

"Lava," Guts disappeared into the smoke.

"Use Focus Energy," The girl trainer ordered, "When that Quilava attacks you from the smoke, counter it with your Double Team,"

Ariados was a little weary of the smoke around it, but it took a very deep breath, drawing its senses to the max. Its body was entrapped in a black shade.

Luckily, Ariados noticed a flaming wheel tumbling towards itself.

When the fire-type's flaming body erupted from the clouds, Ariados dashed from side to side, effectively dodging the attack.

Guts stood there, body still aflame, his eyes bouncing side to side, watching his enemy.

"Show that Quilava your finisher!"

Then, the bug-type launched forward, the darkness oozing from it enveloping Guts' flames like a black hole swallowing light that can never escape.

When close enough, Ariados shot a leg forward, a trace of air marking the trajectory.

It was about to bludgeon the fire-type, but on a second look, he was gone.

Ariados halted his attack, before catching a flash to his left.

It was Guts, now landing after the jump of speed.

SCREECH!

For some reason, it sounded like a tire stopping on a paved road.

Though, there was nothing the bug-type could do as after the fire-type began to roll, the collision came.

CRACK!

Guts smashed against Ariados, hearing its flesh shake from the attack.

The big flew onto it's back, defeated.

"Quil," Guts sighed, satisfied with the battle.

"I still have one more," The girl said, switching for her third and final defender of the second wall.

It was a Venonat, ready to make a stand.

Bob switched for Dio.

"Pidgeo," He cawed, standing in an interesting pose.

"Gust,"

As if he knew, the flying-type pointed at his enemy.

Both Venonat and its trainer were taken off guard by this.

But, a wind had been made by this gesture, tearing through the bug-type.

"Venonat, Tackle," With this, Venonat ran forward.

Dio looked at Bob for a second.

"Wing Attack," Bob sighed, shaking his head.

"Pid..." The flying-type flew forward, his wings bright.

"...geotto!" It didn't take long for Dio to bash into the bug-typ, sending him back.

"Ven..." It groaned, struggling to get up.

"Venonat, Psybeam,"

In an instant, a ray phased towards Dio, who was not even taking the battle seriously.

"Quick Attack,"

Venonat at had hoped the attack would damage the flying-type. It would be a disappointment, as Dio would vanish and knock the bug-type down with a thud.

"I...lost," The girl was devastated, returning Venonat, "however, I do not hold any grudges, no matter the loss...you can go forward,"

Bob nodded, returning Pidgey, and walked forward.

While he did, Bob whipped out the Pokédex.

It had vibrated while he was battling.

'Quilava has learnt Flame Charge!'

'Geodude has learnt Smack Down!'

'Neat,' Bob thought, putting it away, 'I should find the entrance first before I do anything else,'

After a couple of minutes from walking in the gym, an entrance appeared.

This included a trainer.

"Mhm," The boy spoke as he stared Bob up and down.

It was obvious, so Bob took out another pokéball to battle the third and hopefully, the final wall of defence.

The enemy trainer brought out his first pokémon.

"Venomoth!" It said.

'Time to burn another bug, Guts,' Bob thought as he brought out the fire-type.

"Guts, Flame Charge,"

"Gust, Venomoth,"

WOOSH!

Strong winds tumbled down from the bug-type, heading towards Guts.

Though, he was unshaken.

His body blew into flames like a lighter's light being flickered on.

Next thing the boy would know, would be Guts dashing into the wind.

Soon, he slammed into Venomoth.

The bug-type regained its composure, although it was frightened by the speed.

"Psybeam,"

Concentrating, Venomoth, with a strained head, unleashed a ray of powerful potential.

"Dig,"

As the beam cracked the floor around him, Guts submerged into the ground, avoiding the headache.

"Moth?" Venomoth looked around, wondering where its opponent was.

"Moth?!?" Thus, began a panic attack.

"Calm down," The trainer said, "its only below the surface,"

This, however, carved more terror into the big-type as it flew around, it's eyes trembling.

BOOM!

Venomoth, in its fear, found itself flying in the way of a Flame Charge, sending its head up.

Guts double tapped with an Ember that torched the already damaged bug.

The boy nodded, switching pokémon.

"Paras," The Paras cried, confused of its situation.

Bob, without thinking, brought out Dio.

The flying-type narrowed his eyes at the bug-type.

"Wing Attack," Bob ordered, remembering the four times weakness.

"Pidgeotto!" Dio obliged, dashing forward.

"Fury Cutter,"

BASH!

SHING!

Dio did not expect a claw to strike him as he flew past.

'Fury cutter won't be a problem,' Bob thought, "Again, Wing Attack,"

"Fury Cutter,"

The same was repeated.

However, Dio felt as if he went through an entire army to get back to where he was.

He was glad to find out that Paras was out.

The boy nodded, switching again.

It was a Ledian.

So Bob brought out his Geodude.

"Let's do a Rollout, Geodude," It had been working this far.

"Knock him out with Mach Punch, Ledian!" The enemy trainer ordered.

What happened next, made Bob's eyes widen from surprise.

Of course, Mach punch was a fighting-type attack, but that was not what made Bob surprised.

It was the way the Ledian used the attack.

As Geodude rolled to his destination, the bug-type, using one of its hands, flew to the oncoming boulder with its arm close to the floor.

The air began to tear once the attack unfolded.

BOOM!

That low punch smashed into Geodude, sending him back and out of the Rollout.

The very way it was used, reminded Bob of something.

'I'm not going to lie,' He thought, his hand on his chin, 'that has a resemblance to the Smash, which is weird, but is probably just me,'

'However, I should use something else but Rollout now,' He thought, looking at the Ledian, 'did not know it could do that,'

"Geodude, Smack Down,"

At that instant, the rock-type grabbed a boulder out of nowhere and brought it down on the bug-type.

This effectively trapped Ledian on the ground.

"Mach Punch,"

BOOM!

That did not stop it from throwing another low punch into the rock-type's face.

"Dude," He groaned, reeling from the pain.

"Swift,"

"Geodude, Dig,"

Luckily, Geodude dug himself safely into the floor, avoiding the stars.

'So Ledian likes to use the Mach Punch like that,' Bob thought, 'time to take a gamble,'

"Rock Throw,"

CRACK!

Geodude broke out of the ground, launching a rock that slapped Ledian in the face.

"Ledian," It cried as it recovered and lowered an arm.

The air began to break up as the Mach Punch neared its destination.

BOOM!

Geodude flew back.

But with the instinct from Bob acting up, Geodude began to roll.

Ledian had dug its own grave.

BASH!

With this victory, Geodude was exhausted.

He looked at Bob.

"Geo?" Geodude was confused on why his trainer had a face of amazement.

"Nice work," He said, showing him a thumbs up.

"Graveler," The rock-type replied, showing his four thumbs-up.

"Gravel!" He had only realised that he had evolved.

"Mhm," The enemy trainer mumbled, returning his Ledian, "Don't disappoint Bugsy,"

As the boy left, Bob brought out Guts and Dio.

While they both were marveled at Graveler's new evolution, Bob opened the record book.

"Oh, look at that," Bob erased and scribbled, this got his pokémon excited.

So, he showed them:

___

[Guts]Quilava: 8 Wins, 2 Losses (7W Streak)

[Dio]Pidgeotto: 10 Wins, 1 Loss (4W Streak)

Graveler: 6 Wins, 1 Assist (3W Streak)

Spinarak: 2 Wins (2W Streak)

Larvitar: 1 Win (1W Streak)

Wooper: 1 Win (1W Streak)

___

"Besides changing the whole format," Bob said, pointing at Dio's record, "Dio is my first pokémon to have ten wins,"

Both Guts and Graveler congratulated him, while Dio bowed in return.

"Also, there is something else I wanted to bring up before this fight," Bob continued, closing the book, "What would happen if a draw occured?"

"It may be a draw to them, but to me, its a loss," Bob explained, creating different reactions.

Graveler was unsure of this, Guts was curious, while Dio shrugged it off.

"One more thing," He continued, lifting a finger, "if your enemy faints, you have five seconds not to faint as well, that is when the win will only count."

By now, Dio, had the most frightened reaction, Graveler was alright with it, and Guts became pumped up to fight some more.

"That should be it," Bob said, taking out the potions, "Bugsy's a gym leader, so we will take this gym badge,"

After a few sprays, Bob returned everyone and walked through the entrance.

The third wall has been surpassed.

Now, only a single defender stood between Bob and his second badge.

He was ready.
