Adjusting the uniform he now wore, Tyson couldn't help but feel it resembled Ash's outfit from his early journeys.
With his loyal Charmeleon standing beside him, anyone would assume Tyson was a fully-fledged Alliance trainer. But in truth, this identity was only a cover as Tyson prepared to embark on a new journey.
Faced with two options presented by Shadow, Tyson had chosen the second after careful deliberation. While the first option might have fast-tracked him into law enforcement or investigative ranks, it was laden with risks. The credibility of the intelligence Shadow would have used to position him there might have raised suspicions. Moreover, being a child of just ten years, rising to prominence within such a system would have taken far too long, shackling him to an environment he found stifling.
Instead, Tyson chose the path of freedom—aiming for the Indigo Plateau Conference and a shot at the championship. A victory there would label him a prodigy, and the Kanto region's Alliance would undoubtedly support his growth to promote their region's strength. As long as he performed well, Tyson believed he could climb the ranks swiftly while enjoying the independence he craved.
Shadow seemed satisfied with Tyson's decision.
To ensure his success, Shadow provided Tyson with extensive resources. This included in-depth trainer guides and study materials about Pokémon care, alongside breeder knowledge—a necessary skill for someone traveling alone. Shadow had emphasized that being self-sufficient was crucial for a lone trainer like Tyson. Unlike others, he wouldn't have the luxury of sending his Pokémon to a breeding center for care.
After all, not every trainer had access to someone as trustworthy as Professor Oak, who not only nurtured Pokémon but also helped them grow stronger.
Shadow had even offered to care for Tyson's Pokémon himself if necessary, but Tyson was determined not to burden him further. He decided to take full responsibility for his team.
In the first two years of Tyson's undercover mission, Shadow promised to supply him with monthly resources to aid in training. The more Pokémon Tyson caught, the greater the support Shadow would provide. Though Shadow never said why he went to such lengths, Tyson suspected it was because Shadow saw a reflection of his younger self in him.
"Let's go. First stop: Pewter City."
With that, Tyson released his Charmeleon, its flame-tail flickering brightly. His Abra, still drowsy, remained inside its Poké Ball for rest.
Shadow had conveniently dropped him near Viridian City after Tyson made his choice. While Viridian Gym, led by Giovanni, was an obvious place to start, Tyson planned to leave it for last. He suspected Giovanni—being the head of Team Rocket—might not know he was an undercover operative. Defeating Giovanni at the end of his journey would serve as a demonstration of strength while giving Shadow the recognition he deserved.
Tyson couldn't ignore the debt he owed Shadow for the opportunities and resources he'd been given.
As he approached the edge of the forest, a flock of startled Spearow burst from the trees, darting straight for him. Tyson's instincts flared. His Pokémon sprang into action as the system's battle detection feature confirmed no extraordinary Spearow among the flock.
"Charmeleon, Ember! Scatter them!"
"Eevee, use Helping Hand, then follow up with Swift!"
The coordinated attacks lit up the forest, driving the aggressive Spearow back.
Watching the scene unfold, Tyson couldn't help but feel like Ash on his first journey—except this time, there was no rain, no Pikachu, and no mysterious Ho-Oh soaring above.
But for Tyson, his Charmeleon was all he needed.
Flames danced, stars streaked through the air, and the battle raged on.
