Flashback—Several Years Prior
“Luk, you need to trust me, I didn’t touch that man’s woman,” Pauh explained. I was shaking in fear, and so was my mother, who was terrified by my bruises.
I knew Pauh was innocent. He wasn’t capable of being so brutish. I just wanted to know how things got to this point.
“What type of person could do this to a mere child?” Meh wailed. She grabbed my father’s arm and shook it. “Teerak,” she began endearingly, “We need to do something. You can’t take the blame for this type of thing!”
My father, Parunchai, rebutted. “I understand, teerak, but he’s the Alpha king now. What am I supposed to do?”
“He used to be your friend,” my mother, Weepa, retorted. My eyes were so enflamed, I couldn’t even cry anymore. I just wanted to roll up in a ball and die.
“How can I ever show my face after this?” I asked aloud. My mother came to wrap her arms around me.
For the first time in my life, my father had tears coming down his eyes.
