章節 3: Chapter 2

A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell Daily Life 1

The first part of Chapter 2. Wow, at this rate, I’ll have this finished before we go on holiday! Enjoy A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell!

* Ding Dong! *

“Good morning, filthy insects! Let’s enjoy another day of this one of a kind killing game!”

Nanako woke up. Her mind was still recovering from the first trial.

Iroha and Yuki were dead.

Dead... nobody had thought it possible, but it was the truth. Nanako’s mind decided to flash back to the discovery of Iroha's body and the roulette wheel that essentially tore Yuki apart as proof.

Nanako shook the memories from her head as quickly as she could, but it helped little.

It was time to get some breakfast.

Chapter 2: A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell

Daily Life

After Nanako got dressed, she met the others for breakfast.

“Looks like yesterday really did happen…” Emma sighed.

Nanako knew that she had to be a good leader and prevent anyone else from dying.

“Right.” The mystery novelist nodded, trying to force herself to be confident. “Everything is going to be fine, everyone. We’ll get past this. We… we might have lost Yuki and Iroha, but… that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t get out of here all right! We just need to work together!”

Suddenly, Monochrome appeared.

“Greetings, filthy insects!” They said. “You have survived your first ever class trial! For every class trial you survive, a new world will open up to you! In this case, 4 new labs will be made accessible by you!”

“So that's it? Four labs are supposed to make up for the deaths of our friends?” Nikei asked, upset.

“Yes!” Monochrome said. “It will keep you excited until you explode!"

"What- NO, don't even mention 'exploding' again!" Mikado shrieked, memories of Yuki’s awful, horrible execution in his head.

Monochrome then disappeared.

The four new labs were Kokoro, Hajime, Hibiki and Kanade’s labs.

Nikei and Nanako decided to explore Kokoro’s lab.

The Ultimate Psychologist was typing on a IPad of sorts, and Nanako then saw a lone trap door that had opened.

“You can explore this to find a way to escape,” Kokoro reassured them.

With Nikei following her, Nanako went down the stairs. The steps spiralled deep down into underground caves. At the bottom of the steps, the two of them found themselves in a strange library.

Nikei was inspecting some books.

“Looks like this is a library of… Goose Girl retellings. ” He said.

Nikei made a noise of disgust, flicking through a few of a books.

“Looks like they all follow the same basic storyline.” He said. “Something along the lines of the princess switching places with her maid so she can escape the arranged marriage and do something else.”

“Oh, hey look!” Nanako said. “A book which isn’t a Goose Girl retelling!”

The book was a Sleeping Beauty retelling called The Brightest Thread, and Nanako loved Sleeping Beauty.

Nanako’s mind screamed, “The book is booby trapped!”

But the mystery novelist wasn’t listening.

She gripped the spine…

Just as she was about to pull it out, behind the bookcase, a domino was pushed and then it knocked over a ball that rolled into a button that activated a pulley.

Then a book fell from higher up in the bookcase, towards Nanako’s head.

This was the booby-trap which had been activated by trying to pull the book out.

The mystery novelist would be a sitting duck for what would soon happen.

“Sister!” screamed Nikei.

THUD!

Nanako barely had time to turn around to her brother as the book fell on her head.

Once the book made contact with her skull, Nanako collapsed, her legs giving in. She felt Nikei trying to shake her awake, but the feeling was soon gone as well, as her consciousness faded.

DUN DUN DUN! So the first section of Chapter 2’s Daily Life ends, and it’s on a cliffhanger…! Have I pulled a Kaede Akamatsu on you guys and killed Nanako? Only the next part of Chapter 2 has the answer! It will be the final section of daily life, too, as we’ll get a motive and a murder!

A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell Daily Life 2

Last time, our protagonist was in a library, found a Sleeping Beauty retelling called The Brightest Thread, and was knocked out by a booby trap. Will Nanako’s fate remain unknown or will we find out now?🤨

(spoilers for both the ending of SDR2 and all of Danganronpa 2)

Nanako wasn't sure of how much time had passed until she woke up.

She was in her own Ultimate Lab, propped on a chair, alongside Nikei and Kokoro.

“She’s awake!” Kokoro said.

“I’m still alive…?” Nanako asked as she stirred awake.

“Yes,” Nikei said. “You were hit over the head with a book. You could have died of blunt force trauma!”

“Right,” Nanako said as she got up.

“Look at what I found,” Nikei said as he got out a book he had gotten from that library.

“It’s a book.”

The book was called "The Tragic Tale of Class 77-B", a crude drawing of a bear on the cover.

With a sigh, Nikei turned to the first page.

He read through the book quickly.

He turned to Nanako with a grimace.

“There’s been another killing game.” He told her.

“What?” She asked.

Nikei then read the book again:

“Once upon a time, there was a horrible boy called Izuru Kamukura. His talent was the Ultimate Detective. Yet, whenever Izuru would tell stories of crimes he had solved, he would be mercilessly mocked.”

"But what does this have to do with that other killing game?" asked Kokoro.

“That was because Izuru wasn’t regarded as anything special. In Hope’s Peak Academy’s eyes, Izuru was just nobody. As a result, Izuru had no friends. This made Izuru so angry!” Nikei read.

“I think I can see where this is going,"

Kokoro cringed.

Nikei kept on reading.

“The forsaken Ultimate Detective then decided to get revenge on Hope’s Peak Academy by making their most successful class traumatized shells of their former selves- and what better way to do that than pitting all sixteen Ultimates against each other in a traumatic killing game in the Neo World Program and broadcasting a live feed of the event through the school’s monitor?" Nikei read.

"Then what happened...?” breathed Nanako.

Nikei turned a page. He read the next page with a grim look on his face:

"The Killing School Trip, as it came to be known, deleted the avatars of the Ultimate Imposter/Porkfeet, Teruteru Hanamura, Mahiru Koizumi, Peko Pekoyama, Ibuki Mioda, Hiyoko Saionji, Mikan Tsumiki, Nekomaru Nidai, Gundham Tanaka, Nagito Komaeda, and Nanami Chiaki. There were six trials, five motives, five murders, five executions, and one suicide of sorts. It ended with five survivors.”

Nikei closed the book. Nanako's mind raced with horrible thoughts born from that information.

11 people apparently had died gruesome, violent deaths in that Killing Game. Those 5 remaining survivors were probably extremely traumatized.

Nikei opened the book again.

“Wait, there’s more!” He said.

“Apparently, it says Izuru was thinking of sending the killing game footage to the participants' loved ones to destroy their hope as well! Also, it says that there was a serial killer in the class. In the third case, two people died instead of one. And in the fourth, there was a locked room murder and suicide was involved somehow. The murders stopped after Case 5, and that was when the fates of the final five survivors were determined…”

“I’m not having another four cases!” Kokoro screamed. “One case is enough!”

Nanako couldn’t still speak.

Nikei then read more…

“The end of the Killing Game did not come without its consequences, though. The survivors were so traumatized they had nightmares. The five people who survived the whole game were forced to seek therapy to recover from these nightmares.”

Nanako was lost in thought. She had known Class 77-B for some time now, but the students had never meant to get involved in a plan for revenge. The five people left had been left so traumatized, they had nightmares which they had been forced to seek therapy to recover from.

The mystery novelist didn’t speak for a few moments... what could she say?

“And Izuru? No one knows what happened to him.” Nikei read. “Did he survive, or did he die from the crazed people of the post-apocalyptic world? It’s a mystery to this very day.”

Nikei then closed the book.

Nanako was left speechless. An entire class had ended up being forced to murder each other and safcrice the murders so that a boy could get revenge on a school.

Suddenly, Monochrome’s voice came on:

“Gather for information about your second motive!”

Nanako, Nikei and Kokoro headed to the dining area.

Monochrome was there.

“Greetings, flithy insects!” Monochrome said. “It’s time for your second motive! I call this one… embrassing moments and secrets!”

She handed the students 15 envelopes.

Nanako opened hers.

What was on it made her stomach sink…

Nanako Yomiuri once fell into the trash can in her school.

Around her, emeoitons ran high.

Near her, Nikei was looking at his own secret…

Nikei Yomiuri is a narcissistic, lying journalist who uses people’s lies for his own selfish needs.

Mikado was angry.

And what did his little paper say? What could possibly have been written that could cause Mikado Sannoji to lose his shit?

It was actually eight simple words that set him off.

The real Mikado Sannoji is just a plain nobody.

“The real me is… just a normal man?!” Mikado screamed.

“In two days, I’ll be releasing your secrets into the world!” Monochrome said. “So kill, or… else.”

Nanako then walked to the side.

She then spent a few hours in her Ultimate Lab.

Suddenly, Nanako felt hungry.

So she decided to get some food.

She went to the kitchen’s pantry, but she got more what she bargained for.

Hibiki Otonokoji, the Ultimate Vocalist, was lying on the floor. Her hair was wet. A pan full of water was on the floor next to her.

No matter how hard Nanako tried, she couldn't tear her eyes away from that sight.

Hibiki was… dead.

Another murder!

It’s deadly life time! Guys! Let’s investigate!

Chapter 2: A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell

Deadly Life

The muscles in Nanako’s face stiffened, and her legs began to wobble. She let herself sit down with a thud in disbelief.

Quickly the room began to fill with the others. Nanako dry-heaved at the sight and looked away.

"Wh-what in the hell is this?!" Yuri stammered.

"No! Not again, no!" cried Emma.

"Hibiki... why Hibiki...?" Nikei whimpered.

* Ding dong! *

“A filthy insect has been swatted! Now you have to investigate before the Class Trial begins!”

Monochrome appeared.

“Greeting, flithy insects! A body has been discovered! Okay, I shall pass out the Monochrome File #2! This should start to feel familiar," They grinned. "Now then, do your very best to investigate! I'll see you later at the class trial!" And as soon as they finished handing a copy of the file out to everyone, they vanished

"Let's begin, then," I nodded.

Investigation Start!

Taking a deep breath, Nanako opened the Monochrome File. It resembled the last one in that Hibiki’s pixel was crossed out with a hot-pink X, and the word ‘Deceased’ was under it.

The victim was Hibiki Otonokoji, the Super High School Level Vocalist. The body was found in the pantry. Cause of death is drowning.

Truth Bullet Added: Monochrome File 2

Looking around the room, Nanako saw that Nikei had begun examining Hibiki’s body. The others had begun shuffling around the room looking for clues.

“Looks like the Monochrome File was right, after all.” Nikei commented. “Hibiki really died by drowning.”

Truth Bullet Added: State of Hibiki’s Body

Nanako got down on her knees and started to investigate the pan.

It was full of water. She supposed that's where the drowning part came from.

Truth Bullet Added: Pan Filled with Water

Now, Nanako noted, next to the body was a microphone.

“Looks really suspicious.” She said.

Truth Bullet Added: Microphone

“Time’s up for investigation, you disgusting insects!” Monochrome announced. “Now, it’s time for the fucking class trial!”

Everyone headed to the elevator.

Eventually, it arrived at the trial room.

This time, the walls were pink, the floor was purple and the podiums were decorated with music notes.

Lilac curtains hung from the walls.

It seemed like it was gonna be redecorated for every murder that happened.

One of us is the culprit! Another person had been murdered. Who could've done this? The second trial begins...now.

Next time: Class Trial!

A Thick Line Connects Heaven and Hell Deadly Life 2

Class Trial 2! Who killed Hibiki?

TW: Execution.

“First things first, a brief introduction to the Class Trial!” Monochrome said, perched on a throne of sorts. “In the class trial, you will debate over and vote who the impertinent insect that murdered one of your peers was. If you get it right, then that insect will receive punishment AKA execution at the hand of yours truly. If you get it wrong, however, then the insect gets off scot-free, and the rest of you are offed! The insect will then leave the Sacturaty! Now, let the trial commence!”

Class Trial, Begin!

(Non stop debate)

Make your own agruement!

Nikei: Let’s start by talking about the cause of death.

Truth Bullet: Monochrome File 2

Nanako: Looks like Hibiki drowned.

Mikado: It wouldn't even surprise me if someone here was already a killer. I mean! At least one of you has a body count, right?

Syobai: But how did she drown?

Yuri: Yuri thinks it’s possible that Kanade is the killer!

Kanade: No-no-no! You've got the wrong idea! I don't know anything about what happened! I really don't! Honest! I was… Um... What was I doing there….?

Nanako: How did Hibiki drown? Well, it’s possible that it happened because of the…

Truth Bullet: Pan filled with Water

Nikei: So the killer must have pushed Hibiki into the pan and she drowned!

Nanako: Was that what happened?

Syobai: Yuri is obviously the killer.

Yuri: Are you accusing Yuri? [upset] Hurting people is something Yuri would never do! How are you meant to make friends that way?

Otori: If Yuri is not the killer, then who is?

Nanako: First, we need to consider the…

Truth Bullet: State of Hibiki’s Body

Sora: But her hair was wet! Where do we even start?!

Nanako: With the parts of Hibiki that were dry.

Nikei: There was a big bruise on Hibiki’s forehead, which I found during my autopsy.

Setsuka: Maybe the killer bashed her head against the pan?

Nikei: Possibly.

Nanako: Onto my final point…

Truth Bullet: Microphone

Nanako: I found this microphone lying on the floor next to Hibiki’s body!

Nikei: Looks like there’s something recorded on it.

Nanako turned the recording on.

When it turned on, her heart sunk and bile rose from her gut and threatened to spill out from her mouth.

It was a recording of Hibiki's final moments.

“Don’t touch me, you monster!” Hibiki spat over the recording.

“I need to protect my secrets,” a voice spoke.

“If you kill me, you’ll be protecting your secrets?” A confused Hibiki asked.

“Yes,” said the voice as a metal clang was heard.

Sudddenly, the sound of Hibiki screaming was heard, which was cut off by the horrible sound of gurgling.

Which then ended.

The recording then ended.

Nikei and Nanako knew that sound.

“Kanade!” they screamed.

Nanako: That’s it! I figured out who killed her.

“This is what happened!” Nanako cleared her throat.

CLOSING ARGUEMENT

“This event started with the reveal of Monochrome’s motive: If nobody killed, he would leak our most embrassing secrets into the world.

“Hunger struck the victim of this case: Hibiki Otonokoji, Super High School Level Vocalist.

“She decided to get some food. So she headed to the kitchen’s pantry.

“However, the killer was also there.

“The killer didn’t want their secrets to be leaked into the world, so they decided to also get some food. They filled a pan of water and get a microphone, and decided to take them with them just in case things got scary.

“Hibiki didn’t know this and she asked the killer what they were doing.

“The killer then responded by telling her they didn’t want their secrets leaked into the world.

“Then they bashed Hibiki’s head into the pan, bruising it.

“The killer then dunked Hibiki’s head into the pan of water, keeping her there till she drowned.

“The killer recorded every moment on the microphone. But they dropped it on the floor, making their crime come undone!”

“Kanade Otonokoji, am I wrong?”

* Break! *

* Class Trial All Rise! *

Voting time came a minute later. The vote, of course, was unanimous.

“Well, well!” Monochrome said.

“Let’s see if you’re right!”

The display was shown. The pointer sped along until it stopped right on Kanade’s pixel. As before, a cascade of fireworks burst into life above the image, spelling out the word “GUILTY!”

“Congratulations, you successfully determined the killer! Again! The killer of Miss Hibiki was in fact her very own sister! Talk about Sororicide!” Monochrome said.

“Mikado has an announcement to make,” Mikado then said.

“Mikado is sorry for not revealing this during the second trial, but he was planning on killing Nanako using a book from the library under Kokoro’s lab.”

Gasps filled the room.

“You were planning on killing me?” Nanako asked, nearly breaking down.

“Yes,” Mikado said.

“But my plan failed!”

“So that’s why that booby trap was set! Now, why did you kill Hibiki?” Nikei asked.

“It’s because of my secret.” Kanade said as she got out a piece of paper.

Kanade Otonokoji was once apart of a cult.

“A cult?” asked Nikei.

“I’ll tell you a story!” Monochrome said as they got the sheet of paper.

“Once upon a time, Miss Kanade Otonokoji had a faithful relationship with her sister, Hibiki! They were friendly to each other and stuff, yada yada. A terrible event shattered their faith in each other, and now Kanade despises Hibiki! What was that event, you may wonder? Why, let me explain!”

"But what does this have to do with that cult?" asked Emma.

“One day, Kanade was bored of being in a band!” Monochrome said. “She chose to enter a world that wasn’t hers. She chose to enter a cult, while her sister was just left behind!”

"That... that's horrible!" Setsuka yelled, appalled.

“Treating your own sister like that is not just cool!” Nikei said.

“Kanade’s cult wasn’t what it seemed, though. Its members had been treated as its playthings. The members only lasted mere months at the most - with the help of healing magic and potions - before they finally succumbed to the gruesome torture and rape the cult inflicted on them. Being a new member of it, Kanade was forced to help the leader with the preparations of this torture!"

Monochrome went silent for a few moments. Nanako’s mind raced with horrible thoughts born from that information.

"How… H-How?" Nikei mouthed.

“Kanade then quit the cult, but the leader chose to keep sending her recordings of him playing with his "toys" after that.” Monochrome said. “After that, Hibiki and Kanade hated each other. They were not faithful to each other anymore. The end!”

Nobody spoke for a few moments. What could they say?

“So that’s why you killed Hibiki?” Nanako asked.

“Yes,” Kanade said, crying.

“Right now, you can't cry over spilt blood - it will be execution time soon!” Monochrome said.

“Execution?” Kanade cried.

“Ladies and gentlemen, get ready, because we've got a special punishment ready for the Ultimate Guitarist known as Otonokoji Kanade!” Monochrome said.

“No! I don’t wanna die!” Kanade cried.

“Let’s give it everything we’ve got! It’s punishment time!” Monochrome announced.

Monochrome then pressed the button.

The pixel Monochrome dragged the pixel version of Kanade away.

Game over

Kanade has been found Guilty

Time for the punishment!

Kanade stood in a new location. The setting was a concert stage of sorts.

The guitarist only took a moment to realize an entire crowd of faceless were in front of her, awaiting their audience with child-like cheering and glee.

However, it was what was below the stage that made Nanako truly nauseous: A big glass tank full of what appeared to be sizzling green liquid.

Acid, Nanako realized.

Kanade’s face was determined as she realized what she must do. Make the crowd happy or end up dying in the most horrific manner possible via acid.

The Concert of Death

The Execution of the Ultimate Guitarist

A faceless tossed Kanade a guitar, and she started to play it.

A relaxing melody filled the air.

Until Kanade struck the wrong note.

The faceless produced tomatoes and eggs and began throwing them at Kanade as hard as they could. The guitarist felt tears of humiliation stain her face as the rotten food struck her body, painting her clothing, skin and hair with stinky slime, but she kept her focus on the guitar.

The faceless now resorted to pulling out various kitchen knives, and rocks - and throwing them at Kanade along with the rotten food. She winced as a knife or two grazed her legs, and nearly cried as her arms were bloodied and bruised and broken from the rocks, but she kept a calm face.

Suddenly, Kanade finished playing.

Maybe it was over.

Maybe she could walk free.

No such luck.

A faceless then pushed a button.

Kanade barely reacted as she was dropped into the tank of acid, disappearing in a green splash. The camera panned slowly upwards as the liquid was stained red via Kanade’s skin melting off her body.

After an hour, the tank was emptied of all the acid inside. All that was left inside the tank was Kanade's skeleton, which had bits of decomposing flesh clinging onto it. It was clear evidence that the audience of faceless had gotten their desired violence.

“How’s that for an execution, huh? Exciting, wasn’t it? Extreme! Thrilling! Musical!” Monochrome said.

“Ahhh! Please tell me that just didn’t happen!” Shinji screamed.

"W-Why...? Why.…. why... why.…." was all Emma could squeak out as she curled into a ball on the floor.

“That was even worse than Yuki!” Hajime screamed as he held a silently weeping Sora next to his shoulder.

Kokoro fainted, dropping silently to the floor.

Otori turned his whole body away, not allowing Nanako to see his reaction other than a grimace of disgust.

Yokuro screamed. "This place is a nightmare!"

Once again, Mikado was disgusted by the events that had just occured.

"Mikado is going to be sick...!" He groaned.

He then threw up on the floor, unlike last time where he threw up behind his podium.

“Such brutality,” Setsuka said. “I don’t know why it’s necessary at all.”

“Please let Kanade’s soul Rest In Peace…” Syobai prayed.

“How’s anyone supposed to rest in peace after getting killed like that!?" Yoroko shrieked in terror.

"I... I can't take this anymore... even Kanade was killed so brutally..." whimpered the normally cheerful, upbeat Yuri, not her usual third person speaking self.

Monochrome then vanished.

Kanade was different from Yuki. She was shy and had an actual ultimate talent. In her past, she had ended up in a situation which Nanako did not know how she would approach differently. Like Yuki, however, her death had been brutal, and it was undeserved.

Finally, she spoke up:

"Shut up! No one else is going to die like that again!” Nanako told her friends. "I… I won't let anything like this happen ever again. That'll be… how I make up for my mistakes this time around!"

* Ding Dong! *

“It is now nighttime. Let your despairing minds rest…”

Nanako slept in her bed.

Could she prevent anyone else from dying?

Only time would tell…

That second motive was… fun. Maybe the next more should be more unique…
