I don't remember much of what my original form was like but I do know this, humans hated me and I hated them just the same. It was a clear-cut relationship that was easy to understand since both sides knew exactly where they stood, which is why this particular situation is now so puzzling.
Now free from my pitch-black prison, I was now finally in the outside world bearing witness to all its glory.
The humans now said I was "one week old" so one week had apparently passed since my reincarnation.
My name was now Arlen Vesper, and apparently, I'm now a human and the oldest son of the Vesper household. Though I am glad to finally be free of that void, something about the current situation just didn't feel quite right, but there was only so much I could do about it, I was only a human child after all.
I was currently in the living quarters of these humans who had taken on the task of raising me. They called it a "mansion" and right now, the female human that always looks after me had taken me to a place called the "balcony." I suppose the name had something to do with the environment because we were now outdoors, the gently rays of the sun were now caressing my skin, and my body twitched wildly. Now cradled in her arms, I could only get a glimpse of her features and the sprawling blue skies that flourished over the landscape. She had a dark sheen of blue hair that went down past her shoulders, and her face seemed round and compact, carefully fitting all her features into a delicate package, coupled with her azure eyes of the same color she was the easiest face here for me to remember.
Her body was quite strange however, as every time she leaned over, the two food sacs on her chest would always block my view. I had begun to wonder if they might have served some other purpose, but for now I just couldn't be sure.
Thankfully, nothing was blocking my view at the moment, so I tried to move my hands towards the source of the light now raining down, but alas I still hadn't gained any degree of mastery over this body as yet. The human woman must have seen my reaction, because she immediately tried to shield me from the rays of light with some sort of device that granted one shade, still oblivious to the fact that I wasn't averse to the welcoming rays in the least.
"Arlen, are you okay?" She whispered to me in a soft voice, I hardly showed any reaction to it but then again, I doubted I could even if I had wanted to.
"How's Arlen doing dear?" A deep voice now called out to the woman who carefully cradled me in her arms. It had come from directly behind us, and in these past two weeks, I had gotten much accustomed to the looming presence.
It belonged to a tall man that sported a robust looking build and soft brown hair that was neatly joined to his beard through the use of perfectly trimmed sideburns. This was apparently now my father, Michael Vesper, his forearms easily stretched the fabric of the long-sleeved shirt he was now wearing, and his imposing presence didn't match up with his facial features at all. He was always ready to crack a smile whenever he saw either of us, and would even go as far as to distort his own face in front of me with strange hand gestures.
I was not keen on human customs, but to me he seemed to be more of a jovial child than a man.
"He's been doing fine but.... something seems a little off…."
The female human now clutching me in her arms spoke in a solemn voice, there seemed to be a hint of something else mixed within it as she spoke.
"What is it, Shiina?" Michael came to her side and crouched to meet our eye levels.
Her lips quivered slightly before she spoke.
"He....hasn't cried...."
"Arlen hasn't cried even once since he was born...He's our first child Michael so I'm not sure what to do.....did ....did I....mess something up?" Her voice cracked up as she spoke, and a transparent liquid slowly welled up in her azure eyes.
"Shiina, you didn't do anything wrong, Arlen is just having a hard time adjusting to all this that's all. He doesn't laugh when I make funny faces for hi either so I'm sure its jus-"
Michael tried to comfort the woman, but instead her emotions had flared up even more.
"Then isn't that exactly why he should be crying!? I don't know what to do, he doesn't cry whenever he's hungry or when I' changing him, or for anything else....I'm honestly at a loss...." Her voice trailed off, and the silver fluid now finally began to flow from her eye sockets.
She began to make a strange sound, and her shoulders were now jerking at random intervals.
Although I wasn't a master at it yet, even I could tell this wasn't a form of human speech.
"Shiina, don't cry. We'll figure this out, maybe we should go see the doctor one more time or even..."
Michael overlayed his hand on hers, as his words trailed off. Up to this point, I could still only vaguely make out the words they were saying, but just now, I'm sure I heard him say the words "cry".
I see...so this is how humans cry...
Just then, I decided to discard my pride for the decision I was about to make. I still wasn't fond of humans in the least, but the fact that these two had released me from that dark void remained true, and it was a debt I intended to repay.
Swallowing my pride, I decided to mimmick Shiina's sobbing behavior. I inhaled a deep breath of air and began puffing my chest wildly, my body jerked and before long I was kicking and screaming in an audible wail.
It immediately caught their attention, soon enough they both took note of my shameful behavior and their expressions immediately shifted.
"Dear...he's....Arlen is...." With fluid still welling up in her eyes, Shiina could hardly get the words out.
"Yea, he's crying." With a broad grin, Michael returned her same sentiment.
"Alright Arlen, come here" Picking me up she then carried me further over to the edge of the "balcony" where I got my first real glimpse at the scope of this wide world.
The sky's blue expanse seemed to stretch on forever, and the floating white specks present within its blue canvas gave it a touch of harmony. Clouds...I had almost forgotten the name; they sparked a sense of intrigue inside me that made one want to take to the skies. Putting on this charade while getting a good view was no easy task, but luckily, Shiina was more than willing to play her part in my little act.
"There, there, mommy's right here don't cry." A subtle grin stretched across her face as she'd said those words and over her shoulder, I saw Michael with the exact same expression watching the entire spectacle unfold.
I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to keep this up for, but I decided to keep going for just a little longer.
