The feeling of a sword piercing his heart returned to him as he remembered the time he spent working under Lilith. It took him countless years to realize that the person, who he thought of as the sole person to care about him, was breaking him.
"Did I break you, or did I break your shell?"
Lilith whispered in his ear as the scenery seemed to freeze. Lex's face was full of sadness, Yuxi looked around them warily, and the dwarves were shouting at them. Everything was frozen in space.
Lilith took small steps away from him before turning to face him. Her face was a blur as if Nikolai's mind refused to see her again. However, he could tell that she was grinning.
"Did I change you, or did I simply reveal what you truly are?"
"I'm not like you," Nikolai gritted his teeth. "I don't enjoy breaking people, nor do I seek their misery."
And... we're back! I'm so sorry for the delay in posting. My finals were... traumatic, to say the least.
I took my time before posting this because I wanted to reread the last chapters I wrote, to make sure that I'm seeing the full picture. I didn't want the time I spent away from this novel to change how I write it.
Sadly, it did, but in a good way! I was too caught up in the pace. When I looked back now, I believe that this ending of the first volume is the best!
Nikolai was never the type of person to fit in a party, so his separation from Sergio was inevitable. Sad, but necessary. They are the polar opposite kind of friends.
This will be the last chapter in this volume, and I hope you've enjoyed it so far. The next volume will be filled with action, hopefully, and I hope this ending was satisfying enough.
I wanted to end this volume with a bang! But you know what, there's no bigger bang than the spiritual growth of our protagonist: the realization that he was toxic to the people around him.
Let me know what you think in the comments, and please forgive me for taking such a long break!
