章節 39: 39. The Ride Home

Cara rolled her eyes, deliberately ignoring Joana's question as they continued toward the diner.

Joana, refusing to be dismissed, suddenly appeared in front of Cara with supernatural speed, startling her. "I'm asking you a question—do you feel the same for her?"

Cara paused, catching the subtle edge of jealousy in Joana's tone, as if she desperately hoped the answer would be no.

"Does it really matter? What matters right now is meeting up with my friend and explaining things to her before she burns me to a crisp," Cara replied, keeping her tone even.

"You're deflecting, Cara," Joana pressed, her piercing gaze unwavering.

"Deflecting or not, it's none of your business whether I feel the same way about whoever you're talking about," Cara shot back, her irritation bubbling to the surface.

Joana smirked, a hint of satisfaction crossing her face, but she dropped the subject. Together, they walked past the kitchen and into the diner, where Farrah stood nervously at the entrance, her shoulders tense. Cara immediately noticed the worried expression on her friend's face.

Farrah spotted Cara and fixed her with a sharp glare. "Where have you been? What took you so long? I got scared, and the bus left ages ago!"

"I'm sorry," Cara said, offering a sheepish look. "I lost track of time."

Farrah's gaze softened slightly, but then her eyes narrowed as she noticed the bruises on Cara's face. "What happened to your face? Did someone punch you?"

Cara hesitated. 'Should I tell her the truth?'

[I see no reason not to. She's been trustworthy so far,]Hagrit's voice echoed in her mind.

'You are right about that.'

"It's nothing," Cara said casually, attempting to downplay it. "One of the Scott brothers punched me in the face."

Farrah's expression shifted to one of alarm. "What? How? What happened? Tell me everything!"

"We don't have time to discuss this here. It's almost 10 p.m. I'll explain everything on the way home," Cara promised.

Farrah's attention shifted to Joana, her brow furrowing. "Good evening, Miss Trier. I'm guessing you helped save my friend from those miscreants?"

Joana shook her head. "No, your friend did the saving. Thanks to her, those fools didn't get what they wanted."

"I know we missed the bus," Cara interjected, "but Miss Trier has offered to give us a ride home. Let's get going." She glanced at Joana, silently urging her to take the lead.

Joana nodded. "Follow me."

Outside, the three of them walked to the driveway, where Joana approached a stunning black vintage car. Cara's eyes lingered on the vehicle, admiring its timeless beauty and wondering what era it was from. They climbed inside, and Joana started the engine, pulling out of the diner's lot.

As the car glided down the road, Cara broke the silence. "Why did you laugh like a crazy clown in the woods when those idiots were talking about what they wanted to do to you? For a moment, I thought you'd lost your mind."

Joana, her hands steady on the steering wheel, turned to Cara with a sly grin. "You mean this?" She suddenly unleashed the exact same maniacal laughter she had used in the woods.

Farrah jumped in her seat, startled, but Cara remained unfazed. "Yes, that. Why did you do it?"

"I smelled you," Joana replied simply. "I saw where you were hiding and knew you needed a distraction, so I gave you one."

The conversation shifted as Cara filled Farrah in on what had happened in the woods. She deliberately left out the details of why she had gone there in the first place, keeping that information to herself.

When they reached Farrah's house, she stepped out of the car, pausing to remind Cara, "Don't forget—we're going to my grandma's place tomorrow."

"Of course. I'll see you tomorrow," Cara said, watching her friend walk toward the house.

As Joana restarted the car and drove away, she turned to Cara. "Now, tell me everything you remember—anything that might be a clue. I need to know who's responsible for the Temp-V distribution in this area."

Cara leaned back in her seat, choosing her words carefully. "The people who wanted to drain you of your blood are the ones responsible for Temp-V distribution in this area. They're working with someone, but I haven't figured out who that is yet."

She deliberately omitted the fact that her stepfather was involved. That was a separate matter she intended to handle on her own terms.

"Really? Those rednecks?" Joana asked, sounding both surprised and disgusted.

"Yes. They're called the Scott brothers," Cara confirmed.

Joana studied her for a moment, her expression skeptical. "Why do I feel like you're not telling me everything?"

Cara met her gaze with confidence. "That's a baseless feeling. I've told you what I know for now."

Joana didn't push further. Instead, she asked, "How will I get in touch with you if you remember something? We didn't exchange contact information last time."

The vampire's intent was clear—this was more than a casual inquiry. Cara smirked, recognizing Joana's interest. "Give me your phone."

Joana handed over her phone, and Cara quickly entered her number before passing it back.

Not long after, they arrived at Cara's house. As she stepped out, Joana leaned slightly toward her. "Thank you. Goodbye."

Before Cara could respond, Joana sped off into the night, leaving Cara standing in front the gate, a thousand thoughts racing through her mind.

[You have completed your mission Cara despite yourself.]

'I guess you are still sticking being savage?'

[Can I show the details of your completed mission?] Hagrit asked, totally ignoring his question

'Yes, go on.'

[First Random Mission: Save The Vampire (Completed).]

[Main Reward: 1000 Points.]

[Attribute Points: 20 Points.]

[Should I also show you your status?]

'No, leave that for when I have completed the other missions.'

[Ok, that is probably for the best.]

Cara pressed the button on the gate, waiting as Max, likely watching her on the CCTV, came to unlock it.

"Evening, ma'am," he greeted her politely.

Cara nodded in acknowledgment, offering a quick smile as she walked past him.

Just as she thought she was clear, Max approached her from behind, his sudden presence startling her.

"Sorry, ma'am," he said hesitantly, his tone uncertain. "But have I done something to offend you?"

The question caught her off guard. She turned to face him, her expression neutral though his words made her wary.

"No, you haven't," she replied evenly, though the memory of his earlier, sexually aggressive thoughts flickered in her mind.

"Then why are you treating me this way?" Max pressed, his gaze locking onto hers with an unsettling intensity.
