In ancient China, "shifu" is a term that translates to "teacher". However, there is a difference between a teacher you learn from and a teacher you dedicate your existence to learning from. In martial arts, the "shifu" is closer to a master who adopts you from your parents and raises you like their successor. Many parents would distance themselves from a child with a shifu and become "second parents". That's how respected a master is, hence I'm retaining the term "shifu" to highlight that level of importance from a teacher.
