章節 16: Where were you?
Mia stared at him. He was wearing the same outfit as he was last night. His hair was tousled as if fingers had roughened it, and his eyes had bags. She averted her gaze from him. The moment he got beside her, he let out a breath of relief. "What happened, Mia?"
She ignored him. He didn't deserve her glaring at him.
Jack sucked in a deep breath. "I'm talking to you, Mia. Do you know how bothered I was when I got home and couldn't find you? I tried calling, and you weren't picking up." He tried to hold her, but she shrugged his hand off. "Don't touch me, Jack."
His eyes widened. "What happened, Mia? What's going on? Why are you acting like this?"
Mia stared at the confusion on his face. Was that how he had been deceiving her, acting as if he knew nothing when he was, in fact, the cause of everything? She sighed and closed her eyes. "Can you please leave, Jack? I don't want to see you."
Jack's gaze darted to the door and back at Mia. "You can't mean that, Mia. You are my wife. You are injured, and as your legal guardian, I have the right to be here and also to know what happened to you."
Mia rolled her eyes. "Where were you last night, Jack?"
Something flashed in his eyes. She couldn't recognize it, but it was quickly replaced with a frown. "I told you last night that I had a deal to close, Mia."
She nodded absently. He had chosen to lie to her. "Why was your number directed to voicemail last night, Jack? I called you several times, and I couldn't get in touch with you. What happened?"
Jack swallowed. "Mia, all those questions are unreasonable. I told you I was with a business partner, and I had to respect him by putting my phone on silent. We were trying to close an important deal. I didn't know you would try to contact me after I told you that I was going for a deal at the office."
She nodded. Jack sat down beside her on the bed, and Mia moved toward the edge. She glared at his head. He tried to hold her arm, but she shrugged it off. With a low voice, he asked, "What happened, Mia? How did you get into an accident? What are you doing out that late in the first place?"
She chuckled at the serious look he wore. She must have been a fool for a long time. She had fallen for his acts. It was glaring that he had no desire to change, and he never thought she was going to find out the truth.
But newsflash, she knew the truth.
So she ignored each of his questions. If there was something Jack hated, it was being ignored. He loved when he was the center of attention, and everyone was looking at him or looking up to him. He didn't know how to accept that someone didn't care about him.
"I am talking to you, Mia. What are you doing out on our wedding anniversary?" His voice was louder now.
She rolled her eyes again. "What were you doing out on our anniversary, Jack? Would it be too much for you to stay at home with your wife on your wedding anniversary?"
Jack squinted his eyes. "What are you trying to say, Mia?"
She was about to respond when the door barged open, and Sheila's heels made a clanking sound against the floor. Mia let out a breath she had no idea she was holding, and Jack turned towards Sheila with a broad smile on his face. He held his hands out to Sheila, who refused to acknowledge it. Jack looked from Mia to Sheila with a frown.
