When Mei finally came to her senses, all it took was one look around to realize she wasn't at home anymore. Worse yet, there was no sign of Mika anywhere. It was as if he had disappeared altogether. After all, he was right next to her on the couch, so he should've still been there, right?
She looked around, trying to make sense of where she was. The scenery was familiar somehow, but she couldn't exactly place it. The surrounding trees provided a small sense of security for her, so she wasn't completely freaking out. She observed the area again, and finally realized where she was; she was in the starting area from the game Mika had brought home.
"Mika?" She tried calling his name. There was no response, no sign of him. She felt herself begin to panic, but she quickly regained her composure, deciding to not let her emotions get the best of her. "It's fine..." She mumbled to herself, slowly standing up. "I'll find Mika and we'll find a way out of here..." After taking a second to regain her composure, she set out to find Mika.
Not long into her travels, she heard quick footsteps follow from behind her. She whipped around, gripping her staff tightly, ready to fight if need be. To her surprise, she saw a young girl running up to her. She looked harmless, but Mei couldn't be too sure, so she kept a good grip on her staff. The younger girl took a second to regain her breath, before talking to Mei.
"E-Excuse me...." Her voice was soft and had a faint stutter. "Y-Your name wouldn't happen to be Mei by any chance....w-wouldn't it...?" She asked. Mei didn't believe what she was hearing. She'd been in this strange world less than an hour and someone already knew her name. It made her wonder just how much else they know...
"Um, yes...That's my name." She saw no point in lying. The girl seemed fairly innocent, after all. Upon confirmation of Mei's name, the girl's eyes lit up.
"Someone was looking for you earlier...A young boy...I don't remember his name though...." Her voice had lost its stutter but remained soft. Mei's eyes lit up. Mika. It had to be.
"What did he look like?" She interrupted without thinking. The girl stared at her for a second before answering her question.
"Light brown hair....and green eyes just like yours." She replied.
"That's my brother. Do you know where he is? Can you lead me to him?" Mei asked, keeping her eyes on the girl. She hesitated for a second, but she eventually nodded, gesturing for her to follow.
They both were running through the forest for a good amount of time before they finally came upon a clearing. Standing in that clearing was a small group of people, and standing in the center was none other than Mika himself. The second Mei saw him, she ran over to him, hugging him tightly.
"I'm so glad I found you, Mika..." She said with a small smile. "For a second, I thought I'd lost you..." Mika let out a small sigh, hugging her back, smiling in relief.
"Me too...but uh, who's your friend?" He asked, looking over at the girl who had brought Mei to the clearing.
"Oh! My name is Asherna." She replied, smiling at them.
"Asherna?" Mika repeats. "That's a nice name." He finishes with a smile. She returns his smile, as the two turn back to face Mei, who'd remained quiet.
"What? Was I supposed to say something?" She questioned. She noticed Asherna trying to hold a laugh, as she was hoisted into the air. "Hey!! Put me down!!" She demanded, feeling herself be lowered to the ground.
"Sorry. I just wanted to spook you a little bit. Meant no harm at all." A male voice responded.
"Yin, she looks a bit upset. I think you should apologize." Asherna chimed in, trying to act as the voice of reason when in reality, she was the most childish out of everyone in the group.
"Apologize? For what? All I did was scare her a little." Yin argued but backed off. Asherna let out a sigh, crossing her arms.
"Yin, this is how we lose guild-buddies!" She whined, weakly punching Yin in his side.
"No, we lose 'guild-buddies' because you're a childish brat," Yin argued again. Mei sighed, and decided this was her time to step in.
"Did it ever cross your minds that you lose guild members because you two bicker like you're five?" She proposed. The other two fell silent for a good time before Yin nodded.
"You know, Princess does make a point." He agreed. Mei smiled a little.
"You're like a whole new person when you aren't bickering, Yin." She stated, "I could get used to that. Maybe things will be peaceful." Yin crossed his arms.
"Yeah? Well, don't get used to it." He warned. "It doesn't last long. Ten minutes, at most."
"Then those ten minutes will be the most peaceful ten minutes of my life." She replied, hints of sarcasm seasoning her comment. "Arguing aside, surely you know how to get out of here, right?" She asked, looking at both Yin and Asherna.
"Every three 'in-game' seasons, the top guild in the game is gifted their freedom back into the real world." Yin started explaining. Mika made sure to pay attention to everything he was saying, being sure to not miss a detail.
"And what happens to everyone else?" Mika asked, looking at Yin. Yin averted his gaze but continued speaking.
"Those who aren't chosen remain here until the next season..." He finished with a sigh.
"Mika and I don't have a guild yet though, and I'm assuming you two know how to join one, since that's what the bickering was about before, yes?" Mei asked, staring specifically at Yin since he seemed to know more about what was going on around them. He caught her glance and simply nodded. "And just like that, it's settled."
"Looks like Princess and her knight are going to be stuck with us for a while, Asherna," Yin stated. Asherna's eyes grew wide, as she smiled widely.
"Really?! They're staying?! Yay!!" She exclaimed, hugging Mei tightly. Mei hesitated but eventually hugged back. Yin let out a small chuckle and extended his hand to Mika.
"Welcome aboard, Mika." He welcomed, "Prepare for many tests on your patience."
"Let's try to keep the bickering to a minimum, please...I'd like to survive this place without suffering from a migraine the whole time." Mika pleaded, shaking Yin's hand. "Our first goal is to get out of here, not kill each other out of frustration."
"No promises, but we'll most certainly try," Yin replied, giving a small smile. "Either way, it's getting late, and I think we should call it a night, don't you think?" The twins nodded, and Asherna gave a small shrug.
"Yes, please...I'm exhausted," Mei pleaded. "Sleep sounds amazing right now." Yin chuckled, as he and Asherna got a small camp set up, and the whole group called it a night.
