As the console fully powered up, the screen displayed a series of prompts, each leading to different sections of the facility's database. Lena quickly began navigating through the menus, her fingers moving deftly over the keys as she searched for anything that could provide insight into what had happened to this version of Colorado Springs.
"There are security logs, operational reports, and something labeled 'Project Sentinel,'" Lena said, her voice tinged with curiosity. "Project Sentinel sounds like it could be related to the robots or the AI."
She was quickly stopped by a heavy hand on her shoulder, which belonged to the Captain. "Not bad, but no need to waste more time, a full copy of all the data is available back on the jet."
Steve exchanged a glance with Peggy, who raised an eyebrow, clearly sharing his frustration. The Captain's insistence on controlling the flow of information was grating on everyone.
"Then why didn't you say so earlier?" Bucky muttered under his breath, his tone low and edged with irritation.
Peggy placed a hand on Bucky's arm, a silent gesture to stay calm. "Let's not waste any more time here, then," she said, addressing the Captain but glancing at Steve. "If the data is already secured, we should focus on what we can do on the ground."
Steve nodded in agreement, though the tension in his jaw remained. "Alright, let's move out. We've seen enough here. Let's get back to the jet and review what we've got."
The team started to pack up, their movements swift and efficient. Lena hesitated, her eyes lingering on the console. "There might still be more here—something not in the data we've collected," she said, a trace of reluctance in her voice.
Bruce nodded, understanding her hesitation. "It's possible, but we need to trust that what we have will be enough. We can always return if we find gaps in the data later."
In reality, he doubted there was anything they could find that hadn't already been found by the Foundation, for while Lena was impressive in her ability to get into a secured military database, it wasn't her specialty.
And even then, she had used Foundation tools to break in, stuff that the people that came before them had already used such tools and more to get everything these severs hid away.
Once back outside the question of what to do next was on everyone's minds. They had data back on the jet, but since the Foundation had already looked over it they doubted it held anything important or else they would surely have been told about it.
Not to mention that this whole mission seemed more like a test then anything and they likely weren't expected to find anything and instead just prove their abilities.
Steve surveyed the group as they stood outside the facility, each of them processing the situation. The air was thick with tension, a mix of frustration and determination. The knowledge that this mission might just be a test, a way for the Foundation to assess their capabilities, didn't sit well with any of them.
Peggy broke the silence, her voice steady but laced with resolve. "Even if this is just a test, we need to treat it like the real thing. We've learned what we can here. Let's get back to the jet, go through the data, and see if there's anything they missed."
Bucky nodded, his gaze hardening as he looked back at the facility. "Agreed. We're not here to just play along. If there's something more to uncover, we'll find it."
Lena, still slightly frustrated that they had to leave so soon, nevertheless gathered her things and followed the group back toward the jet. She knew that if there was any critical data, it would likely be found in the full analysis back on the jet, but the lingering feeling of missed opportunities gnawed at her.
As they boarded the jet, the Captain remained at the entrance, his expression unreadable behind his helmet. He watched as they settled in, his silence speaking volumes. The tension between him and the rest of the team had been palpable throughout the mission, and it wasn't dissipating anytime soon.
The jet had a full computer system, which Lena quickly logged into. Steve, Peggy, and Bucky could only look on, having little to no knowledge of the Foundation's systems; Bruce knew his way through them but led Lena to take the lead this time.
Since they were in a new world, there wasn't any connection to the Foundation's databases; instead, a lot of information had been downloaded onto the hard drive. Among those were the files the Foundation had recovered from the facility.
As Lena navigated through the files on the jet's computer system, the rest of the team gathered around, their expressions a mix of curiosity and determination. The interior of the jet was filled with the soft hum of the computer and the occasional click of keys as Lena worked her way through the data.
"We've got a lot to sift through here," Lena said, her eyes scanning the screen. "Project Sentinel, operational logs, even personal notes from some of the scientists. It's all here, but it's going to take some time to piece together what's relevant."
Peggy crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on the screen. She then turned to the Captain who was still standing in his iron suit. "Anything important in all that stuff?"
The Captain, still standing at the entrance of the jet in his imposing suit, turned his helmet slightly towards Peggy, the reflective visor hiding any trace of emotion. His voice, when it came through the external speakers, was calm and controlled. "The Foundation has already reviewed the data and deemed it of limited significance. However, that doesn't mean there aren't details that could be of interest to you."
Steve, catching the slight emphasis on "you," frowned. "We'll be the judge of that. Let's go through everything, just to be sure."
Peggy nodded in agreement, her gaze steady on the Captain. "We've been in situations where small details make a big difference. If there's anything to be found, we'll find it."
Lena, already engrossed in the data, began opening more files. "Project Sentinel appears to be the key focus here. Yet there is very little about it remaining, it appears that most of the data has been lost as some point, either deleted or lost when the Foundation recovered it."
The atmosphere in the jet grew tense as Lena's words sank in. The realization that critical information might have been deliberately deleted or lost raised the stakes. Steve exchanged a look with Peggy, who nodded subtly, confirming his suspicions.
"Let's focus on what we do have," Peggy suggested, her tone calm but purposeful. "Even fragments can be useful if we piece them together correctly."
Lena continued to scroll through the files, her fingers flying over the keyboard. "There are mentions of several key locations associated with Project Sentinel. They are mostly centered around in the US, but it seems some facilities might have been in Europe as well."
Steve listened intently as Lena continued to unravel the fragmented data. The pieces of information they were gathering painted a complex and potentially dangerous picture. If Project Sentinel had global reach, it meant that whatever had gone wrong in Colorado Springs might have had far-reaching consequences.
"So, we're looking at something that wasn't just a local project," Steve said, his voice thoughtful. "This could have been a global defense initiative, or worse, a global threat."
Peggy nodded in agreement, her mind already racing with the possibilities. "If they had facilities in Europe as well, it means this wasn't a small operation. We could be dealing with something that affected—or could still affect—multiple regions."
Bucky, who had been silent for a while, finally spoke up. "If the AI they created was meant to be a global defense mechanism and it turned against them… then it might still be out there, active in some form. We can't assume it's been completely neutralized."
Steve couldn't help but imagine that right now, out there somewhere, robots were still hunting down people, innocent people fleeing, living in fear. He couldn't help but clench his hand tightly.
The thought of people, perhaps even entire nations, living under the shadow of this rogue AI sent a wave of urgency through Steve. His mind raced with possibilities, each more grim than the last. If the AI was still out there, continuing its mission unchecked, the potential for disaster was immense.
"We need to act fast," Steve said, his voice steady but carrying the weight of the situation. "If this AI is still operational, it could be causing untold damage. We can't let this go on any longer."
Everyone turned towards the Captain, knowing that he clearly knew this, that he was likely also aware of where they should go from here.
Feeling their eyes on him he didn't back down at all. "We are here to investigate, not start any fights, but indeed, I believe we have wasted enough time here. We are going to Denver next, but beware, no Foundation personnel has been there yet, so we don't know what we are going into."
"Denver it is," Steve said, his voice firm as he exchanged glances with Peggy and Bucky. "We're ready for whatever we might find."
The Captain gave a curt nod, turning towards the cockpit to relay the new destination to the pilot. As the jet's engines roared to life once again, the team settled into their seats, each preparing themselves for what was to come.
