章節 94: Rescue

The Xavier Institute, nestled in the picturesque town of West Chester, New York, was a beacon of hope for many young mutants. However, the journey from Atlanta to West Chester was no simple feat, and night had stealthily descended upon the travelers as they drove on.

Kitty, the skilled driver, noticed a hotel up ahead and suggested they rest there for the night. Max, who was in the passenger seat, nodded in agreement. The car pulled over, and the group emerged from a different space, their abilities allowing them to bypass the hotel's closed doors.

"It seems safe enough. We could use a break," Max remarked, surveying the quiet surroundings.

The group found two clean rooms, each with two beds, and set about making themselves comfortable. Max, always resourceful, merged the beds in one room to create a larger sleeping space.

After a simple meal, Kitty and Sonia prepared to retire for the night. Max, however, had other plans.

"Lauren, go with Kitty," Max instructed, taking Sonia's hand as she made to leave.

Sonia was taken aback but didn't resist as Max pulled her onto the bed.

Meanwhile, in the adjacent room, Kitty and Lauren exchanged awkward glances, mindful of the thin walls.

As Sonia and Max lay together, their hearts raced with anticipation, knowing that this was the first time they had crossed this intimate threshold together.

The bond between Max and Sonia is undeniably unique. Sentiment has quietly blossomed in Sonia's heart, and there was once an opportunity for them to truly unite. Despite encountering some obstacles along the way, their connection seems to naturally align.

Originally, Sonia didn't resist and even harbored a desire to be with Max. While Viper's proposal complicated matters, Max's recent words seem to have brought everything back to its original course.

"I am ready," Sonia softly expressed to Max.

"We will do it but not today," Max murmured softly as he embraced Sonia. "Go to sleep."

Sonia nodded gently, holding Max tightly as she drifted off into slumber.

Eyes are said to be the windows to the soul. Although Sonia and Max's interactions may not be as overtly affectionate as they were before, there's a subtle shift in Sonia's gaze towards Max, brimming with deep love.

....

Continuing their journey, the car pressed on.

After another day's travel, they arrived in New York, specifically West Chester.

"Further ahead is the Xavier's Institute. Should we head there directly or find a place to settle down?" Kitty inquired, bringing the car to a halt.

Max pondered for a moment. "Perhaps we should stay here for a while, find a place where we can establish a more permanent residence."

Kitty suggested, "There's a manor not far from here."

It didn't take long for Kitty to drive them to the manor. Although sizable, it appeared abandoned, with neglected flowerbeds and lawns.

"I heard about this manor back when I was in school. Apparently, the owner moved out with intentions to sell, but it seems it's still unsold," Kitty explained.

"This looks suitable."

"Let's not venture out here. I'll head to the school to check it out," Max proposed.

"I'll come with you," Kitty offered.

Max shook his head. "No, it's more suitable for me to go alone."

Kitty hesitated briefly before acquiescing.

Leaving the car behind, Max soared directly to the Xavier's Institute.

This place holds significant Marvel lore, being the base of the X-Men. However, from the exterior, it appeared desolate, with the darkened interior and dilapidated courtyard hinting at the challenges endured here.

But the true significance lies beneath the surface — in the school's basement.

The X-Men's headquarters.

At Max's feet, a door suddenly materialized, causing Max to fall through.

In the split second of the fall, Max swiftly opened the door again and entered The Diamensional Space again.

The surroundings transformed into a corridor with a distinct metallic texture. On each end of the corridor, one side had a circular door adorned with an X sign, while the other side led to a T-shaped intersection.

At the far end of the T-shaped intersection, a colossal figure emerged, appearing to be on patrol.

Sentinel!

Max observed it with no surprise and proceeded directly toward the T-shaped intersection. Passing through the Sentinel within the different space, it remained unresponsive. Max chose a direction, turned, and advanced.

The facility had undergone a complete transformation into an experimental factory, housing at least hundreds of Sentinels. Max's objective wasn't to destroy these Sentinels but to rescue the individuals within this specific room.

Entering a confined and eerily quiet chamber, the materials used were evidently designed to be exceptionally sturdy, potentially suppressing mutant genes. In the center of the room lay a single bed, beneath the illuminating light, featuring a person restrained with iron shackles.

Her countenance displayed numbness, her eyes vacant.

A lock of white hair adorned her bangs.

Her name was Anna Marie.

In the cinematic universe, she goes by the code name Rogue, and in the comics, she's known as Rogue Girl.

Through skin-to-skin contact, she can absorb an opponent's physical strength and life force. In the comics, this contact also enables her to acquire the abilities of her adversaries.

She is the one Max is determined to rescue.
