Discarding the tracker, Max drove straight home. Merely ten minutes after his departure, Jestner arrived with a heavily armed agent team at the location where the tracker signal had been displayed.
Examining the tracker in the trash can, Jestner's expression turned exceedingly grim.
When Max arrived home, he took a shower and subdued his minor emotions, unsure if it was restlessness or irritability. Then, he returned to the room to rest. The next morning, Max was roused by the clamorous voices downstairs, bewildered. Did he hear Sonia's voice?
"Sonia is here?"
Max was about to rise when the door gently swung open, revealing Sonia's long red hair.
"You're awake." Sonia, seeing Max up, walked in with a smile.
"I thought I misheard, why are you here? Aren't you busy over there?" Max asked, surprised.
Sonia came over, sat down, and explained: "I came out to shop. Although I've settled down, the supplies are insufficient. It will take several days for Eclipse to get a new batch of supplies."
"And the others?"
"Iceman and Shadowcat have left. They plan to assist oppressed Mutants elsewhere. Shadowcat also wanted me to convey her thanks! John sensed a Mutant being hunted, so he went out with Lorna, and Eclipse stayed back at the base."
Sonia briefly updated Max on the situation there, and he sighed softly. While he knew Katie wouldn't likely stay, the three months of their interaction had provided considerable inspiration and assistance. Fortunately, Max had grown accustomed to these comings and goings, quickly adjusting his mindset. He smiled, pulling Sonia into his arms while holding her hand.
Sonia nestled into Max's embrace with a giggle, blushing slightly in embarrassment. "What are you doing?"
"I knew you weren't busy there; I tried to find you last night!" Max smiled, embracing Sonia's excitement and getting up.
Perhaps due to Max's restlessness, Sonya's face turned red. Actively kissing Max, Sonia whispered, "Will you go shopping with me later?"
"Okay!" Max agreed, sealing the deal with a direct kiss.
Sonia resisted for a moment but was soon captured. If she weren't aware that there were still people in the house and stayed as the last line of defense, Max might have succeeded.
"Was it intentional?"
Seeing Sonia break free from his arms and stand up to tidy her clothes, Max asked breathlessly.
"You, are you always this impatient?" Sonia inquired, blushing.
"Please, I'm just a regular guy," Max whispered under his breath.
Sonia could clearly sense Max's uneasiness, though he was trying hard to conceal it. Recognizing the inappropriateness of the moment, Sonia smoothly shifted the conversation, asking, "I've never heard you talk about yourself before. What about your ex-girlfriend?"
"I've never had a girlfriend!" Max retorted with a hint of irritation, rolling over to find some clothes.
Sonia, looking surprised, remarked, "You've never had a girlfriend? Surely you could..."
"Do you think that's possible?" Max replied casually.
Sonia nodded. "Well, I also find it unlikely. But why haven't you found a girlfriend? Worried that, being a mercenary, you can't promise a future to someone?"
Max approached Sonia, hugging her with a smile. "If you were my girlfriend, would you be okay with me flirting with others?"
"I..." Sonia hesitated, unsure of how to respond.
"So, you see, I've never had a girlfriend!" Max grinned, kissing her before releasing Sonia and saying, "Let's go. Aren't we going to buy something?"
"Oh!" Sonia followed, still in a bit of a daze.
.....
Max guided Sonia on their shopping expedition. Sonia's list consisted of simple necessities like food, drinking water, bedding, and more. Max skillfully assisted Sonia with her purchases.
Sonia checked the items off her list. "Alright, I've got everything."
"Then I'll drive you back," Max declared, starting the car to return Sonya to the Mutant underground base. Despite the apparent shift in topic, Sonya's demeanor remained unchanged, leaving Max with the impression that today wasn't the right time for further communication.
"Good," Sonya replied with a nod.
Upon reaching the Mutant underground base, Max assisted Sonya in unloading the supplies, ready to make his exit.
"Wait, can you accompany me to another place?" Sonya unexpectedly requested, catching Max off guard.
"Where?" Max inquired just as his phone began to ring.
Signaling to Sonya to answer the call first, Max listened as John's voice came through, sounding slightly urgent. "Max, Lorna's been captured."
Swiftly processing the information, Max reassured, "Even if they've caught her, there's no immediate danger. They likely intend to use Lorna to eradicate the entire Mutant underground base. You head back to the base now, and I'll handle the rest."
"Okay!" John responded promptly before ending the call.
With the phone now silent, Max's mind raced, formulating a comprehensive plan to rescue Lorna from her captors.
