章節 56: Chapter 56: Apocalypse Universe Finale

"This should be the place. Damn it, how many times have we trudged through this forsaken path?"

Colonel America led a horde of zombies into the basement, their movement full of menace. However, as they burst through the doors, they were stunned by the scene before them: dozens of robots were smashing away at a heap of metallic debris, the cacophony of their destruction echoing through the chamber.

"Where are they?! I'm asking you, where are the people?!" Hercules froze for a moment, then grabbed the Colonel by the collar, roaring furiously.

After enduring so much hardship and battle just to taste fresh meat, they had found nothing—no flesh, not even a single hair.

Even though Hercules usually respected Steve as a leader, this moment of failure was intolerable.

Colonel America hesitated for half a second before shoving Hercules away. "I told you, didn't I? They… they must have teleported out before we arrived! Quick! Stop those robots!"

Frustrated and ravenous, the zombies lunged at the robots, clawing them apart and gnawing at the metallic shells in an attempt to vent their anger.

In no time, the robots were torn to pieces, their charred circuitry filling the room with the smell of burnt electronics.

But the teleportation device parts, which had already been damaged beyond repair after completing the transfer, were now completely irretrievable. The robots had merely been cleaning up the last remnants.

"What now? Can this thing still work?" Hercules picked up a piece of scrap metal from the ground and scratched his head as he muttered.

"No, of course not! But what's that on the wall?"

As the Colonel reached for a gray, tattered book embedded in the wall, the room's center suddenly lit up. A platform rose from the ground, projecting a green hologram into the air—an image of Doctor Doom materialized.

The hologram smirked, his voice dripping with mockery and disdain.

"Foolish zombies. You're too late! The fresh meat you so desperately crave has long since been teleported away to safety, and the teleportation device was destroyed by Doom's own hand!"

Even though Doom wasn't physically present, his arrogance was palpable. His proud posture and tone amplified the zombies' sense of defeat.

The Colonel's sharp teeth ground together audibly as his frustration boiled over. He let out a deafening roar: "DOOM!!!"

Seizing his shield, he hurled it with all his strength at the hologram's base. The shield smashed into the tiled floor with a resounding crash, shattering the tiles and causing the hologram to flicker and fade. Eventually, Doom's smirking image vanished entirely.

"Hmph, what the hell is this thing, anyway?"

Turning back to the wall, the Colonel pried the gray book loose. Its cover featured a grotesque face, its eyes seeming to blink in fear.

"Don't eat me! Don't eat me!" The Death Book's wrinkled face contorted even further, pleading desperately.

The Colonel eyed the book with disdain. "A stupid old book. Dead things taste like crap—why would I eat dried-out leather that's probably older than my great-grandpa?"

The book fell silent for a moment before timidly asking, "So… you won't eat me?"

"I didn't say that."

"What?"

With a ripping sound, the Colonel tore off half a page and stuffed it into his mouth. The paper sizzled as he chewed it twice, then spat it out with a violent retch.

The soggy wad of paper landed on the ground, soaked in saliva.

"Disgusting," he growled.

Still holding the book, he suddenly noticed another platform rising behind him. A faint beeping sound emerged from below.

Hercules scratched his head, curiosity piqued. "What's that thing?"

He leaned in for a closer look and spotted a green countdown timer on the mechanism below. Squinting, he muttered, "Hey, Steve, is this—"

Outside Doom's castle, the world fell eerily silent.

Then the ground began to quake. The earth cracked and split, rocks and soil erupting as a massive shockwave rippled outward, spreading fissures far and wide.

A fiery explosion erupted, consuming the entire fortress in an instant. Roof tiles shot skyward, disintegrating into ash midair. Exquisitely carved marble statues melted into liquid and were flung into the atmosphere.

In the spot where Doom's castle had once stood, a mushroom cloud now towered ominously into the sky.

Elsewhere, Hank sat at a table, still wearing his grimy Ant-Man suit. Cheerfully humming a tune, he carefully sliced into a piece of raw meat with a knife and fork.

He bit into the tender flesh, his teeth slicing through it with ease. As he chewed, the juices burst forth, filling his mouth with rich, savory flavor.

Juice trickled from the corner of his lips, dampening his chin. Smiling, he murmured to himself, "Latveria, huh?"

"Those fools really thought they'd find anything worthwhile there? They should've realized on the Helicarrier that Doom's no pushover. Good thing I didn't join them either time. There are plenty of survivors down here—why go after scraps of tough, dried meat when fresh meals are just waiting to be found?"

Behind him, several screws began to tremble, then slowly lift off the ground. At first, they merely quivered as if drawn by some invisible force. Then, as the energy intensified, the screws hovered in midair, glowing faintly with an eerie light.

Unaware, Hank continued to savor his meal, oblivious to the danger lurking behind him.

With a sudden whoosh, the screws shot forward like bullets, piercing Hank's skull. His head exploded in a gruesome display of blood and brain matter.

The screws didn't stop. They circled back and plunged repeatedly into the remains of his head, as though carrying out a cold, calculated command.

After a few moments, the screws finally halted, embedding themselves into a nearby wall. Blood dripped from their tips, forming crimson streaks.

A silver-haired man wearing a purple helmet and cape stepped into the room. His tall, imposing figure surveyed Hank's lifeless body with a faint sneer.

"How pitiful. A former king reduced to such a state?"

He stepped deeper into the room, speaking to an unseen presence. "The monsters have left our city. I decided to venture out to find survivors, and what do I discover? This lunatic tied you up and hid you here."

"…Are you still alive?"

Bound to a metal table, a one-legged man, pale and gaunt, stirred at the sound. His eyelids fluttered faintly.

The silver-haired man hesitated, then added, "I've never said this before. I never thought I'd have to say it. But…"

"We need to save this world."
