Present Day - August 31, 2002

NOW, SEVEN MONTHS after they’d left DC, here they were—Angie Little and her son John—back in the nation’s capital and living in this shithole of an apartment while John attended school and she worked for minimum wage as a cashier in a small grocery store.

Well, not for much longer. She and John had never come so close to being taken.

The suitcase was a disaster, the lining torn out and the lid broken off. She could stuff their clothes into a plastic garbage bag, but because she didn’t have the time to look them over, she didn’t dare take anything else in case they were bugged.

And yeah, that might come across as paranoid, but it was a little boy’s life on the line, and Babe had no intention of letting Dr. Gautier get her stinking paws on him.

The money Gunther had given her was long gone, as was what she’d managed to earn on her own. Thank God for the money Delilah had left her. Babe would be able to replace everything they couldn’t take with them.
