Okay, Jeanette Van Orden. Pull yourself together. She didn’t know what was happening, but she couldn’t take Scottie with her. She reached for the phone. The only thing she could think to do was call Delilah.

“Del, it’s—”

“Babe. Hi, sweetie.”

“I’m sorry to wake you—”

“Not a problem.” Del yawned. “I had to get up soon anyway. What’s up?”

“Gunther’s back.”

“I thought he was going to send for you to join him in Boston. Is everything okay?”

“I don’t think so. He sounded scared.”

“He didn’t come back to your apartment?”

“No. He wants to meet me at Java Joe’s.”

“And you’re worried. Okay, bring Scottie to me. I’ll be more than happy to watch him.”

“Do you have to go out?”

“I’m supposed to meet Sweets, Pretty Boy, and Spike to plan out a scene for a new client, but that’s later this evening. It can wait.”

“Thank you. I’ll try to keep it brief.”

“Don’t worry about it. I love spending time with my nephew.”
