At first, Lemuel thought he might hear it wrong.
Signora Deborah Savas is Sylvia Dawson's mother—his boss' mom. However, Deborah Savas chased out her daughter Sylvia from the Savas family when she fell in love with David Dawson.
In Lemuel's understanding, his boss had a cunning plan, and he is not worthy of being called the rightful assistant of Zion Dawson if he does not help him out, so he has already planned everything for his boss. That's how efficient he was. (To the point that he would abduct someone.)
"Boss, you know your grandma would only meet you if you brought a bride to her."
Deborah Savas has no heir, and her only hope is her sole grandchild, Zion. But the Dawson and Savas have been arch enemies ever since their forefathers rode horses as transportation and wielded their swords at each other's throats.
The senior Dawson didn't allow Zion to go to the Savas family, as he planned to make him his heir.
However, he passed away almost a year ago, and David claimed everything for himself, including the piece of land the senior Dawson gave Sylvia Savas when she gave birth to a son.
That land is now famous worldwide and is known as Grace Palace Garden. Even renowned celebrities and people in high society choose to get married here.
Zion frowned at what Lemuel had replied, which displeased him.
"All I need is to have a pleasant talk with my grandmother," he clarified.
Lemuel fell silent for a moment. His intention of helping his boss is the same as before. He also doesn't want to lose the palace.
Signora Sylvia is such a kind woman. She helped his mother, who raised him alone after his father died when he was just a little kid.
"Boss, think and consider hiring a contract bride—someone whose family would not want you."
Zion raised an eyebrow and asked, "You suggested I choose an orphan bride?"
Lemuel nodded his head in response to his boss's. Soon, an evil smile appeared in Zion's mouth.
"David Dawson would explode in anger if I married a poor girl instead."
"That's right, boss. She is perfect for your plan!" As Lemuel chirped this, he placed a silver purse on the wooden office table.
Zion lowered his gaze and looked at the bag. He heard about a woman asking his staff if they had found a silver purse she had left somewhere.
Now that his assistant actually found the possible missing bag, it confused him why Lemuel gave it to him instead of forwarding the purse to the Lost and Found Desk so it could be returned to the poor woman.
So, Zion raised an eyebrow and queried, "Why are you giving me this purse?"
He was happy that his assistant was reliable, but he didn't understand what they could do with this purse.
"Boss, your problem in looking for the perfect poor bride is the owner of this purse."
"Really?" This time, Zion creased his forehead with curiosity. "How so?"
"Boss, let me explain to you..." In the next few minutes, Lemuel shared the conversation he had heard with the woman who had left this purse.
"If she doesn't apply for another temporary travel visa or leaves Miranda Country within forty-eight hours, the immigration police will arrest her and then…."
"I know our law, Lemuel. But your point is?" Zion is growing impatient. He's tapping his fingers on his office table, guessing where this discussion leads.
"If she is the one, you will have no problem, boss. She cannot disobey you when her life is in your hands." Lemuel assured his boss.
Zion raises a brow. He asked, "So you are suggesting I hide her passport and lie that we didn't find her purse?"
"Yes, boss!" Lemuel smiled proudly, saying he was too clever to come up with this idea.
"Lemuel, do you need a raise or wish to lose your job?"
"I only wanted to keep my job, boss! That is why I am helping you," Lemuel retorted; he remained confident that what he was doing was right.
"Is that so? Have you realized that keeping this woman makes it more likely that we abduct her instead?"
"Boss, it will be a benefit for both of you! She needs help, and you need one too!"
Zion leaned back in his chair. He looked straight into the eyes of his assistant and said,
"Lemuel, I am only interested in abducting men and beating them to death. But a woman? She would only be a headache for me."
"But boss, don't you want to stop your father?"
Zion remained silent as he pondered. Lemuel's suggestion is actually brilliant. But who is this woman? Can he be assured that she will not compromise the revenge he is plotting against his own father?
"How certain are you about this foreign woman? We know nothing about her." he keeps questioning his assistant for some assurance.
"I researched the internet to see if I could get important information about her. I found out she has an Instagram account, and it has most of the information we need."
"Like what?" Zion asked impatiently.
Lemuel went on with excitement in his voice. He explains further, "One of her posts is when she visits her parent's graveyard before her trip starts. I noticed she has no post about having siblings, but only photos of her friends."
"How about her boyfriend? You didn't put a thought that he probably came to look for her?"
Lemuel replied, "I didn't find any photo of her boyfriend, nor a photo of her with someone."
"Is that so?"
"Yes, boss."
Zion turned to his right and gazed at the beautiful skyline above the vast ocean. After some consideration, he asked Lemuel, "Where is she now?"
"She's outside, boss," Lemuel replied immediately. He was getting anxious after his boss fell silent and was in deep thought for a long time.
However—
Zion darkened his face as he cast a dagger look at his assistant. "What did you say?"
"I said she was outside waiting to meet you, boss…."
He was cut halfway when his boss yelled at him.
"Lemuel, why do I have a feeling that you abducted this woman? Already? Without my permission?"
Lemuel didn't reply but averted his gaze from his boss' questioning stares.
"Lemuel Gibson!"
Outside, Monique shudders upon hearing the roaring voice from the office. She was already scared when these men forced her to come with them. Now, she felt even worse. She wondered what kind of boss these men had.
'Are they arguing inside? For what reason? What do they want from me?'
Monique's head was filled with several questions that started giving her a severe headache. She has too much anticipation, which causes her body to shiver again.
Not long after, the door in the office opened, and Lemuel poked his head out.
"Come in, Signora Monique."
"How did you know my name?" Monique creased her forehead, confused.
She had no recollection of introducing herself to any of these men. Besides, after addressing her Signorita, is he now calling her Signora?
Monique scrutinized Lemuel, waiting for his reply, but the man merely kept mum.
