"Before you go, there is another matter I want to talk about, if you don’t mind," Sonia said once he was done. He nodded and waited. This was a difficult subject, but one she had to address.

"The fact that I slept with a black man in exchange for protection, what does that make me?"

"A woman who made the best of her situation. I understand what you are thinking, but answer me this. Were the people back at home there when you tried to stay alive?"

"No, they were not."

"And, will you return back to South Africa?"

"I don't know my future, I cannot say."

"Let God surprise you then. You do not have to worry about what our fellow countrymen will think. You cannot be blamed for their judgments."

"It just feels like betrayal," she admitted.
