Chapter 82: Storm (Part 5)

As expected, after hearing Alice's explanation, Alger felt enlightened, believing he understood everything.

Regarding more complex details - such as Alice's past identity, which era she came from, or how she awoke in a human girl's body - Alger was curious but realized these were beyond his ability to investigate. Though the girl before him might not be able to defeat him in direct combat, she possessed the power of death that could render him helpless. Perhaps she wasn't fully familiar with this power initially, but the fleeing demon dog and her attitude confirmed she was gradually regaining control of her former abilities.

Of course, these were just Alger's personal speculations. Any resemblance to the truth would be purely coincidental.

Having successfully dealt with Alger, Alice secretly breathed a sigh of relief. What she told him wasn't entirely false - she had merely employed some linguistic techniques. How Alger interpreted it was not her concern.

Alice's eyes darted as she posed a new question: "Aren't you supposed to be from the Storm Church? Won't your subordinates be suspicious if you take me to that sea area you mentioned?"

Alger glanced at the outspoken Alice, ultimately abandoning any attempt to dissuade her. He explained, "It's all sea exploration. If someone's willing to pay us to take them where they want to go, it doesn't matter where we sail."

When Alger brought Alice aboard the ship, her body concealed by a wizard's robe with only her youthful face visible, she noticed several curious gazes upon her. Alice glanced over these looks, which held neither particular kindness nor malice, mostly just curiosity.

Alice followed Alger to her assigned room. "If you need anything, you can still ask now," Alger said, standing at the doorway.

After surveying the room briefly, Alice suddenly turned to Alger with a serious expression. "What if I discover I'm seasick after we set sail?"

"...You're a Beyonder!" Alger emphasized.

"Beyonders don't get seasick?" Alice asked, bewildered.

Alger struggled to maintain a respectful expression.

"Alright, I understand," Alice shrugged. "How long will it take to reach that sea area you mentioned?"

"If all goes well, we should be in the vicinity by the time you wake up tomorrow morning," Alger replied.

"Has that grand gathering of pirates you mentioned already ended?" Alice continued.

"The gathering lasts for quite some time. It should still be ongoing," Alger answered.

"Can I go?" Alice's eyes lit up.

"Do you... need to buy something?" Alger hesitantly asked.

"Not really," Alice shook her head. "I'm just curious about different people's lives. You understand, right?"

Alger's expression conveyed, "No, I don't understand the interests of you deities."

Disappointed, Alice asked, "So, can I go?"

"I'm afraid not," Alger coldly refused.

"...Then when do we depart?" Alice pouted, dissatisfied.

"We can leave now if you wish," Alger replied.

As the sails unfurled and the sea breeze hit Alice's face, she realized she was truly aboard a pirate ship. How cool!

That night, Alice was too excited to sleep.

When Klein was awakened in the middle of the night by Alice's prayer of "I can't sleep, are you asleep?", he couldn't help but curse in the gray fog.

He pulled Alice into the gray fog and glared at her before she could speak: "Are you really ill?"

Alice blinked innocently twice.

After grinding his teeth, Klein said through clenched teeth, "Never mind. Since I've brought you up here anyway, I have something to ask you."

"What is it?" Alice inquired.

"If, and I mean if," Klein carefully chose his words, "If I were to claim the bounty for killing a 'demon' that was actually a dog, what would happen?"

Alice recalled her own experience and answered, "You might meet the Nighthawks in your dreams."

"...What did they ask you?" Klein asked, taken aback.

"They asked my name, why I came to Backlund, and... how I became a Beyonder," Alice replied honestly.

"How you became a Beyonder?" Klein repeated the last question, then asked curiously, "What did you say?"

"I asked him what a Beyonder was," Alice said, holding her forehead in exasperation. "I was this close to blurting out that I wasn't a Beyonder."

"When did the Nighthawks' questioning become like this?" Klein recalled his own interrogation by Dunn, full of confusion.

"Haha," Alice gave a very perfunctory laugh. "Probably because I kept emphasizing that Evelyn should go to the Church of the Evernight? Oh right, Evelyn is the girl I mentioned."

Klein looked at Alice with pity and hung up the call.

Alice rolled around in bed countless times, counting from sheep to stars, from stars to dumplings, and from dumplings to... well, she didn't count further because she fell asleep counting dumplings.

When Alice woke up again, it was due to violent shaking.

The intense rocking jolted Alice from her dream. She was dazed for a moment before realizing she was at sea.

...Even for being at sea, this much shaking isn't normal!

Alice hastily threw on her clothes and jumped up, flinging open the door and rushing out of the room, only to collide head-on with a sailor coming to call her.

"Ouch," Alice said, one hand on the doorknob and the other rubbing her head as she looked at the sailor before her. "What's happening?"

"Storm," the sailor explained succinctly. "You'd better get up."

Alice's brow twitched. Her expression grew uncharacteristically serious as she asked the sailor, "Can you take me to the bridge? Or whatever you call the place where the ship is controlled?"

"You know how to sail?" the sailor asked, surprised.

"I don't," Alice said calmly. "But I'm guessing we weren't supposed to encounter a storm, right?"

The sailor's silence confirmed this.

"So, you might as well take me there," Alice sighed resignedly. "Although I don't know what's happening, whenever something improbable and out of the ordinary occurs, I feel it must be related to me."
