Klaus's POV
As the girls move out, Kol is drinking with a faraway look in his eyes—it's the look he gets when he's reminiscing about something.
"So, what are you going to do, Kol?"
He looks at me, his gaze sharp with rage, betrayal, sadness, and understanding. Finally, he sighs.
"About what?" Kol asks irritably, and starts to get up to follow Bekah as if she's a little girl.
"She has very overprotective brothers," I remark.
We flash and observe from a distance, able to hear Rebekah and the baby vampire—the birthday girl and recent collateral damage who escaped my hand twice. Both times, I indulged it. She has spine and courage, I suppose. She certainly has my interest now.
"Are you going to stay?" I ask lightly, but we both know it's a heavy question. He doesn't like to stay in one place for too long. If you ask him, you'll get a ridiculous answer—something about savoring different kinds of mead or wooing different girls, enjoying their warmth and blood. But I know he gets melancholic and crazy if he stays in one place for too long.
The one who blamed himself the most for Henrik's death, after me, was Kol. He was angry at me for it, but he also let it go, knowing I couldn't do anything at the time.
I can already hear Rebekah stop breathing after I ask that question. Kol notices too; he has that exasperated expression, but answers resignedly.
"You know what? I shall stay and be magnanimous to you lot, as you've never been to me.
I already find you allowed this particular dopplegager group too much leeway, as if we owe them some kindness
. And Elijah didn't retaliate even after a deal was broken,
you lot never learn when slights and attackes are made you should show the other side who they are dealing with,
i will be sending a message to this little group later and you wont interfere in this paricular message i am sure you will even be happy because of it
and
since you so desperately pleaded for me to stay here.
"
I look at him deadpan.
'Well, its Kol, it'll only be refreshing for a little while.'
"So, shall we have a challenge then?" Kol says, blooding his hand and extending it toward me.
I bloody my hand as well and clasp his.
"The challenge shall be... I shall also become Bekah's favorite brother this time, until the time of our mother's passing, alongside the title of her best brother. We'll decide the winner when Bekah announces it in front of all our brothers."
It seems Kol has let go of the betrayal and the daggering for now.
"Very well, I'm sure you'll lose, Kol," I reply with a deadpan tone.
We both hear the giggles coming from Rebekah and Caroline, after she's been taught to listen and be a predator, rather than becoming prey.
We flash toward them.
"Bekah, a challenge has been made to Nik by me, as such—"
Kol pauses, his expression one of reluctance and resignation.
"I shall join this cesspit known as high school, and you are given the rights to shop for my wardrobe until your end of high school, with the condition you don't jeopardize my clothing," he says.
"Silly little brother, always giving Bekah a little too much. Very well."
"Fine. After graduation, I shall join college as well. I'm sure Elijah can become a professor," I state, setting my terms.
"Why, Nik? It's good that you decided. The terms are established then," Kol says, and then shakes my hand again, with glee as if he is sure he will win
sigh
"Luckily, Nik fooled himself this time. If he wanted, he could go as a teacher to this school. I'm sure there would be many young women who would want to be taught by him."
"It's always good when Nik decides quickly."
"I better become your favorite this time, Bekah. I'm even going to hell for you," Kol announces.
"We'll see, Kol," Bekah replies, raising her brows, her shoulders shaking with laughter.
"Very well, I shall continue my drinking and search for some hunt. Bye then."
"Don't kill anyone in this town, Kol. It would be annoying," I say to him as he's leaving.
"Fine," he replies distractedly.
"Well, ladies, you can enjoy the night. Goodnight, love," I flash a smile at Caroline, then speed away to my art studio. I need a drink and a new canvas to do a lot of thinking.
