At 5:30 PM, Lu Heyang was still in the lecture hall at Jia University, answering students' questions. His classes rarely ended when the bell rang.
There were always quite a few female students gathered around him with questions. Some of them looked unfamiliar—probably not even psychology students. But since the university's classrooms were open to all departments, he had to address even the most basic queries.
"Professor Lu, I'm Tang Yifei from the English Department. I've been feeling really down lately. Could I add you on WeChat to talk about it?" A short-haired girl peeked out from behind her textbook, her eyes filled more with hope than with sadness.
Lu Heyang immediately recognized that her feelings had nothing to do with depression and everything to do with infatuation. Unfortunately, he couldn't help with that.
"Room 315 in Building 1 is the counseling office. I suggest you go there for a detailed consultation," Lu Heyang said, adjusting his glasses. "Ms. Li there has a lot of experience handling student issues."
"But..." The girl didn't give up.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed in his pocket. Lu Heyang was strangely relieved. He pulled out his phone and said to the girl, "Sorry, I need to take this."
Eager to escape, he answered the unknown call and began walking out.
"Hello?"
"Professor Lu, what do you want for dinner?"
It was Lu Xun's voice, with that playful lilt. He must have bought a new SIM card somewhere.
"I'm not coming home for dinner…" Lu Heyang frowned and took a deep breath. "Wait a minute, how do you know I'm a professor?"
"Following you is too easy," Lu Xun chuckled. "Honestly, I wasn't even planning to brag about it if you hadn't brought it up."
"I even got a key to your place, bought a new SIM card, and did some grocery shopping."
Lu Heyang gritted his teeth.
The fact that Lu Xun was still alive had surprised him—maybe even brought a touch of happiness he wasn't ready to admit. But now, this man felt almost like a stranger, ten years of separation making him unpredictable. Worse, Lu Xun seemed to be playing this all off as a simple game, as if it were nothing.
And Lu Heyang, barely putting up a fight, had already let him see the "You Win" screen.
"So... are you really not coming home for dinner?" Lu Xun pressed.
"No, I'm meeting someone," Lu Heyang answered firmly.
"Okay…" The tone on the other end dragged out, making Lu Heyang feel as if Lu Xun was pouting.
But Lu Xun didn't push further, quickly hanging up as if the call had been a mere formality, not a genuine invitation to dinner.
Suppressing an inexplicable irritation, Lu Heyang glanced at his watch. He usually went straight home after class, but now his own house didn't feel like home, and he couldn't go back.
"Professor Lu?" A clear, cautious voice called from behind him.
Lu Heyang turned and nodded slightly. "Ms. Gan."
A female teacher with long curly hair hurried to catch up with him, her smile nervous.
"Professor Lu, do you have time?" Gan Tang smiled, explaining, "You're new here, and since we're in the same department, I've been meaning to invite you to dinner."
"Also, I wanted to thank you for the other day."
Two days ago, she'd had an accident and stained her pants. Lu Heyang had noticed and lent her his jacket to cover up.
With nowhere else to go, Lu Heyang hesitated briefly before replying, "Sure."
Gan Tang's smile widened. "Do you have any dietary restrictions?"
"Just something light will do, I'm not picky."
"They say you're a bit of a lone wolf, Professor Lu, but I find you easy to get along with. You're very kind."
Lu Heyang smiled but didn't comment.
After a ten-minute walk, they ended up at a Cantonese restaurant. Out of habit from his years abroad, Lu Heyang pulled out a chair for her. Gan Tang blushed as she sat down.
Lu Heyang thought to himself that he should probably stop doing things like this, as it might give people the wrong idea.
"This place is known for its soup. Let me get you a bowl," Gan Tang offered, reaching for the ladle.
"I can do it myself, thank you," Lu Heyang said, placing his hand over the bowl.
As she hesitated with the ladle mid-air, a few drops of soup splashed onto his hand.
"I'm so sorry, I got distracted… Did it burn you?" Gan Tang quickly handed him a napkin, clearly flustered.
"It's fine," Lu Heyang replied.
"I thought I saw someone at the table behind us watching us," Gan Tang whispered, lowering her voice.
Lu Heyang turned to look but saw only a half-empty glass of water at an otherwise empty table.
"He was just there when I handed you the napkin," Gan Tang said, confused.
"Maybe they didn't like what they ordered and left early," Lu Heyang suggested, rubbing his hand, still feeling the oiliness of the soup. He stood up. "I'll be right back, just need to wash my hands."
Warm water cascaded over his hands as Lu Heyang lathered up some soap, rinsing thoroughly. Suddenly, he was yanked backward with a force so strong that he stumbled into the men's restroom.
Everything happened so quickly. He was shoved into a stall, his face pressed against the door with such force that his glasses bent slightly. It was only then that he realized who had grabbed him.
"Lu Xun?!"
This man had clearly showered, smelling of the same mint body wash they both used. He pinned Lu Heyang against the door, one hand gripping both of his wrists.
"Professor Lu, so you're skipping dinner at home to meet with a female colleague?"
"Don't…"
Feeling Lu Xun's lower abdomen pressing against him and his hand reaching around to unbuckle his belt, Lu Heyang's eyes widened in shock. He struggled, but Lu Xun didn't give him the chance, quickly tightening his grip on his hair, immobilizing him.
"You're good at this, huh? Pulling out chairs, serving soup… Are you planning to have a sister-in-law by tomorrow?"
"Not here," Lu Heyang hissed in pain. This man caused him pain whether he was alive or dead. It was like a curse, something he couldn't escape. His eyes softened, a resigned look mixing with a hint of moisture.
There it was again—that pitiful expression.
The sight of it made something flare up in Lu Xun's belly. He tightened his grip on Lu Heyang's waist, slipping his hand under his shirt.
"Hmm…" Lu Heyang let out a muffled sound.
The next second, that sound was silenced by Lu Xun's lips.
It was an aggressive kiss, Lu Xun's tongue forcing its way past his teeth, relentlessly ravaging his mouth as if he wanted to steal all of his breath. Though they had kissed many times the night before, Lu Heyang hadn't been conscious. Now, he could clearly feel the heat and passion radiating from Lu Xun, setting his body on fire.
Lu Heyang grew weaker, completely yielding to Lu Xun's control, until he was leaning against the door, his body burning up.
Just before he passed out from lack of oxygen, Lu Xun pulled back, leisurely taking in the sight of Lu Heyang's dazed expression and flushed cheeks.
He wiped the remaining moisture from Lu Heyang's swollen lips, as if wiping dew from a rose petal.
"Go tell her you've got something to do and have to leave."
With his breathing finally under control, Lu Heyang pushed him away, creating some distance between them. He fixed his clothes, casting a cold glance at Lu Xun, his eyes landing on the awkward bulge in Lu Xun's pants.
"Clean up before you come out."
Lu Xun responded with a meaningful smirk, curling up one side of his lips.
