Walking into the house after Morgan and Dwayne, Joe is led to a room with a bed in the corner. Joe set Rick on the bed and then walked out into the living room. Joe watched Morgan and Dwayne start to board the door and put heavy blinds over the window to limit light in and out.
Joe walked over and helped by grabbing a piece of wood, nails, and a hammer before boarding the front door and then the back door. Joe walked through a door on the side of the house, finding himself in the garage, Joe looked around and found some random things that could be useful.
Joe grabbed some saw blades, some rope, a couple flashlights, a baseball bat, a hatchet and a machete. Joe walked through the door having found everything he thought was useful, he started to board that door as well. He remembered that walker back at the hospital that had played dead before trying to bite his hand.
By the time the house was completely secured, it was starting to get dark. Morgan walked to his bag and dug out a couple cans of beans and Vienna sausages, along with a small burner and a pot. Pouring the cans into the pot and starting the burner. The three sat down in front of it, Morgan started to explain about the situation of the world. But as if clockwork, Rick Rolls out of the bed onto the floor.
Joe commented, "He did the same shi... stuff when he woke up at the hospital."
Morgan asked, "So, how did you end up in the hospital anyway?"
Joe explained, "I got shot by a shotgun, if I remember correctly and coincidentally, so was Rick. We woke up in the same hospital room."
Morgan nodded and was about to ask more questions when Rick stumbled into the room. Rick asked, "How long was I out? Was that a damn shovel?"
Joe answers, "A couple hours. Yeah, that was a shovel."
Rick looks at the black man and the kid and asked, "Who are they?"
Morgan answered this time, "I'm Morgan and this is Dwayne."
Dwayne chimed in, "Sorry about the shovel."
Rick nods blankly. Joe then turns to Morgan and says, "Now that sleeping beauty is awake. Would you mind explaining what has happened while we were out of commission?"
Morgan nods saying in a story telling tone, "It all started when there were small riots on the news. Things developed very quickly, and the government was slow to react to the walkers. At first, no one even noticed the dead rising, everyone thought that it was some cult or a terrorist organization."
"When it was already too late, the government started to deploy troops and scientist began to study the walkers, but it didn't last long as the labs were overrun or destroyed because of corruption."
"It wasn't long before people learned a pattern. People who get bit turn into one of them walkers. Also, rarely when someone gets scratched, they start to show sign of turning. No one knows why, but either way it is better not to get bitten or scratched by the walkers. The walkers are attracted to sound and light, I personally believe that they use smell as well." Rick was shocked by the realization that this was going on all over the country and even the world.
Meanwhile, Joe is sitting there staring at the food, his stomach grumbling. Joe said, "On that dreary note. How about we have some food?"
The others nodded and Morgan brought the pot of food over to the dining room table. Morgan them served the food as Dwayne began to do a little dance in his chair. Joe and Rick were about to dig straight into the food when Dwayne held his hands out. Dwayne said, "Daddy! We got to say blessing."
Morgan looked at Joe and Rick before nodding and reaching his hands out. They all joined hands as Morgan began to say a blessing, "Father, we thank you for this food. Thy blessings. And we ask that you continue to look after us as we make our way through this twisted world. Amen."
Joe didn't wait any longer and began to scarf down the beans and sausages. It wasn't long before he finished his bowl. Morgan and Rick talking as they ate slowly, getting to know each other. Morgan explained, "When it all started, I didn't know what was happening, but I wanted to get my family to safety. The only problem was, "where is safe?" I decided to bring my wife and Dwayne to a military camp that was established to take in refugees."
Rick asked, "What happened? Why didn't you stay there?"
Morgan answered, "The base was overrun, and in the process, my wife was bitten." Joe clenched his fists as he was reminded of Lydia, but soon his grip softened when he remembered how happy she looked. Rick was a little crestfallen, thinking about his family and their outcome.
They are all pulled out of their revery as Dwayne says, "We seen it happen before. When my mom..." Dwayne begins to tear up, Morgan patting his shoulder. The group fell into a dreary silence. This silence was broken when Morgan and Dwayne walked over to the living room, laying on the beds they had set up. Rick went over to another bed across them and lay down. Joe walking over to his backpack and pulling out the machete and hatchet.
Back at the table Joe begin to sharpen them to the best of his ability with a file. Joe slowly hones the edge before rubbing it on a piece of leather to polish it. Dwayne asks Rick, "So, you were a bank robber?"
Rick chuckles, then says in a southern accent, "That's me, the Deadliest Dillinger of the south, "Kapow!" The father and son chuckle. Rick states, "Sherrif Deputy".
Morgan nods, "Makes sense." Suddenly, a car alarm goes off, startling them. Dwayne jolted awake from his half sleeping state. They rush over to the window, Morgan saying, "Dwayne, kill the lights, it'll draw them."
Then he looks at Rick and says, "A walker must have bumped into a car. It has happened before. Only lasted ten minutes."
Joe questioned, "Really? I feel that some of these walkers, are a little special."
Morgan asks, "How so?"
Joe responds, "Multiple times, there have been walkers that play dead, in order to try and bite you. They do this even though they hear you. Maybe some of them are special..."
Morgan says, "Or it's just a coincidence."
Joe replies, "Could be." With the lights off, they each slide the blind and peer out the window. There were about fifty walkers shambling around the road and down the street was the cause of the noise. A blue car was blaring it's alarm along with a red car further away.
Joe says, "A coincidence, huh?" Morgan was unable to reply as he saw his wife's corpse walking through the front yard.
Dwayne crying, "She's here." Morgan says, "Don't look. Get away from the window." Dwayne stares at his mom's corpse for a second longer before he runs and dive into the bed, crying into a pillow. Morgan quickly went over to comfort and calm him down. Joe and Rick watch as the walker walks straight across the yard and to the front door. Rick goes to the front door and watches the walker through the peep hole.
The walker went straight to the door and started to turn the handle; this shocked Rick quite a bit as he remembered what Joe mentioned. This walker was intelligent enough or had muscle memory to open doors using the handle.
While Rick was observing this smart walker, Joe was peering out the window and observing all the walkers. after a couple of minutes, he found a walker that was holding a rock. Joe smirked and said, "Found you." He was interrupted by Rick who came over and tapped his shoulder. He had been staring at the walker with the rock for 30 minutes straight and Rick was starting to worry.
Rick says, "You should probably get some sleep. While you were zoned out Morgan and I discussed our plans for the future. We agreed that tomorrow we would go to the Sherrif station and get some guns."
Joe says, "Alright, sounds like a plan."
As Joe is about to walk up the stairs, Rick asks, "So what are you doing in the future?"
Joe pauses on the third step and responds, "I don't know. I don't have any family or friends. I'll probably follow you for a while." Rick nods and watches the young man walk up the stairs. Joe reaches the top of the stairs and walks into one of the rooms. He looks around but pauses when he saw his reflection, he was younger. He looked to be in his early 20's, which was shocking because before he died, he was a 41-year-old man.
Taking off the hospital gown and observing his body, he still had all the scars that he was used to seeing. His hair was still black and medium length. His eyes were still that dark grey that was almost black, but if you observed closer, you would notice. He still had the muscles he had worked so hard to build from his previous life, he was somehow leaner as well. Being able to see the striations of his chest when he flexed. He wasn't the biggest, but he was a solid 180 pounds of muscle. He was around six foot tall, so no real change in his height. Walking over to the closet he found a red shirt and black jeans that fit him well.
He grabbed some other clothes that fit him and put them in his pocket space, which he liked to call inventory after the man gave him that knowledge of culture. Using his inventory was not hard, he didn't even have to try, he just willed for something to go in and it did.
Joe walked over to the window and looked at the walkers that were slowly dispersing after the car alarm had stopped earlier. Then he went to the bed and lay down, closing his eyes soon after.
The next morning, Joe woke up at the crack of dawn and started to do a little workout to test his stamina, he did 3 set of 25 pushups, 3 sets of 20 squats, and 4 sets of crunches. Even after this he didn't feel tired at all, but his muscles were a little achy. Joe chalked this up to the shotgun wound on his chest.
Joe went down the stairs and saw that the others were still sleeping, so Joe walked over to the kitchen and started looking for food, he found some cans of evaporated milk and some oatmeal. Mixing them in a pot with some water, Joe begins to cook. Joe can hear some stirring in the other room. Putting the oatmeal in bowls, Joe places them on the dining table before he begins to eat.
Rick and the other came into the room and sat down at the table. Dwayne was half asleep as he ate his oatmeal. Joe asks, "So, when are we going to the station?"
Rick says, "We could go right after we eat. The station had a generator, so there should still be some hot water at the station." Everyone perked up at that comment.
Morgan saying, "Really? Hot water? What are we waiting for?"
Rick says, "What about the food?"
Morgan responds, "Not to be cruel but these are the most god-awful oats I have ever had in my life."
Joe says, "Ok. I get it. I suck at cooking." With that said everyone dumped the oats in the garbage and grabbed their stuff. Joe hacked the board covering the front door with his hatchet before opening the door. The yard was clear of any walkers with the exception of a couple that were sitting against the wooden fence.
Joe walked over to them quietly and destroyed the head of one walker with his hatchet. Rick smacking the other walker's head with a wooden baseball bat repeatedly until it stopped moving. With the walkers down, Joe and the rest pile into Morgans SUV and headed off to the Sherrif Station.
