章節 89: Chapter 89: Reckoner

When Kannin woke up, he forgot where he was, and was immensely confused by the unfamiliar scenery, the tan paintjob on the walls, the entirely different arrangement of the room, and strangely enough, posters of the Sannin on the walls.

'Does she really like them that much?' he thought to himself as he got out of bed

"Getting up so soon?" Warai asked with a creaky morning voice

"I can't sleep with Jiraiya staring at me the whole time like that," Kannin laughed as he slipped on his shirt.

"It's not that bad is it?" she laughed, "I had a little bit of an obsession when I was 6 or 7."

Kannin looked at the posters again and chuckled, "You got the Orochimaru one signed, Warai. That's more than a tiny obsession. I didn't even know he did signings."

"He doesn't usually" Warai said, yawning, "but he did it once as a fundraiser thing for his research."

'Selling out your dignity for research, huh, Orochimaru?' Kannin thought to himself with a smile

"You think we'll ever be that popular, Kannin?" He heard her say behind him.

"Popular?" he repeated, almost confused at the idea, "you want to be popular?"

"Well no, it's not like that," she muttered, thinking, "it's just that, we're pretty awesome shinobi ourselves, y'know? Maybe one day we'll be recognized as the strongest shinobi in the world too."

Kannin furrowed his brows for a moment and looked back at Warai, still in bed, and asked,

"Are they the strongest?"

"Well..." Warai paused, "maybe there's Minato, but who else?"

"I mean," Kannin said with a little exapseration, "I guess I just don't know. I haven't even met Tsunade, Jiraiya is a perverted fool, and Orochimaru is an obsessive creep, and I only met him once."

"What are you trying to get at, Kannin?" Warai asked.

"I don't know," he said, shaking his head, "I guess I've just been a little disappointed in our heroes."

Kannin looked back over at the posters on the wall, each shone with a calculated friendliness which had put him off ever since he had seen them as a kid.

"In the end," Kannin sighed, "they're just people, like us. Flawed, stupid, greedy, whatever."

Kannin slowly walked over to the window and peered through the curtain to the little dusty alleyways that snaked between the houses and huts of the Uchiha compound, dirt softly blown into the air by the occasional breeze, and spoke again,

"I don't think we'll get anywhere great by imitating anyone else, y'know?"

"Which is why you're becoming a carbon copy of Minato?" Warai asked with a grin

Kannin laughed at that, but then turned back and asked,

"Am I really turning into a mini-Minato?"

"Uhh," Warai stammered a bit, "I mean a little. Flying Raijin, Sage Mode, the cloak, it's just like you're subconsciously becoming like him--even if you say that you don't idolize anyone."

Kannin laughed a little and considered what Warai was trying to say, and he couldn't help but agree a little. He'd spent so much time learning other people's techniques, be it Flying Raijin, Sage Mode, Shadow Clones, Kenjutsu, even his water release was quite like Senju Tobirama's... Either way, Kannin saw her point.

Turning back he said to her, "Well I'm a little young to be inventing anything too special, I think."

'But that's not necessarily true, now is it?' Kannin thought to himself, 'I've put it on the back burner for a while, but my Kekkei Tota plan is my own. If I succeed there I'll really have my own style. Plus I still have my chains."

"That's your little curse there," Warai's voice sounded, cutting through Kannin's thoughts, "you so desperately want to be unique, your own--but you were blessed with this eerie ability to sponge up any technique thrown to you."

Warai finally got out of bed, not before stretching and giving out a large yawn. She shuffled over to Kannin and hugged him from behind, and in a softer tone, said,

"Maybe that's what's keeping you from being fully your own--as much as anyone can be their own."

Kannin sighed and rubbed the arm wrapped around him.

"You also have this irritating ability to go headlong into danger as if no one else can protect themselves, and as if you're all powerful. If the recent situation with Danzo proves anything, it's that you need us--so don't wander off on your own like every evil in the world is yours alone to battle, or like every challenge is yours alone to solve."

"I'm not that bad, am I?" Kannin scoffed a little

"You're pretty bad, Uzu"

A wry smile crept on Kannin's lips before he broke their embrace to forage for some breakfast. When he made his way into the kitchen, bounding down the old and creaking stairs, he saw an empty room, illuminated by beams of sunlight struggling to pierce through the semi-opaque curtains, where all the little motes of dust were visible, floating gently in the air. The morning sun had risen harshly today, it seemed.

He went to the pantry to see if there was anything good to eat, and he found some leftover onigiri from the day before, and begrudgingly took two to eat. While he chewed, staring at the long shadow of the coffee mug in front of him, his brows furrowed as he thought about what he was going to do about Konoha at the moment. Currently the village was in a critical position in terms of politics and the timeline. The Nine-Tails attack would happen in less than a year, Danzo was still lurking in the murkiness and gloom stuck on the underside of daily life, and the Uchiha Massacre wasn't far behind either.

Thinking about the massacre shook Kannin deeply. He had become good friends with many of the Uchiha, Warai, of course, but Shisui too--he even was on decent terms with Obito before he 'died.' The images of massacres he had seen in the war, especially his first battle, began playing in his head, but this time the faces of his own loved ones were lying on the ground, lifeless and cold, and their blood pooling in the streets. The onigiri in his mouth started tasting sour.

Then there was his team. Minato said that a genin team would be assigned to him in the coming weeks. Kannin didn't know what to think about having a team. He knew it was the preferable option to joining Anbu for him, but taking care of 3 kids for so long was still daunting, especially since he had no idea what the kids were going to be like. He could get three Itachi's or three Minato's--or he could get three Naruto's or Jiraiya's. Kannin had never taught anyone like that, and he hoped that he would get kids who could keep up.
