She froze in place. She didn't move.
Didn't even breathe.
Not a sound.
She strained her ears.
Footsteps. Definitely footsteps. From behind, walking in her direction.
How far away?? What was it? If she turned back could she make it to that intersection and escape? What if she ran into it?
What if it saw her?
The footsteps were only getting louder.
--Her mind blanked, and she ran.
The terrain was rough and uneven, the lack of lighting was disorientating, and there wasn't anywhere to hide.
She could trip at any minute, break an ankle, and be right there, exposed and helpless.
The footsteps had no issue following her.
Whatever was behind her was keeping a slower but easier pace, not slowing for obstacles at all, just pushing right on through with ease.
This was supposed to come out yesterday but I got quite sick and couldn't focus on such an important chapter, so it came out today. I think it's better today than it would have been even if I hadn't been sick, though.
