The corridors they used now were darker than the others.
Their footsteps echoed through the empty corridors, sending a chill through Isabelle.
It sounded like the whole castle was abandoned.
The silence was unnerving, making every breath louder than she liked.
Not only was the atmosphere of the hallway spooky enough, but being alone with this man who refused to give her a name to use didn't make her any more comfortable, either.
"How do you know this area?" Isabelle whispered, trying to fill the air with sound.
He gave her a sideways glance, lips twitching. "I live here. I've spent most of my life here."
"In...the tunnels? How do you eat? How do you bathe?"
"...I'm not some wraith confined within these walls, unable to step food beyond them."
Well, that did track. She'd seen him twice outside of the tunnels, after all.
But it still didn't answer her question.
