100% How To Be A Hero! / Chapter 16: [16] Zero

章節 16: [16] Zero

1 (Alice)

They entered the arena and immediately charged at the goblin. I watched their actions from behind the bars of our station and shook my head alongside Jack Jack. It didn't look like they had even an ounce of a plan.

"It's only a goblin but. . ." I muttered.

". . .immediately charging at an opponent is a bad habit to form. . ." He finished my words for me.

Indeed.

The two moved with uncoordinated movement. It was as if the extent of their strategy was merely 'I'll slash it so you slash it too.' They readily came upon the goblin and did just that. Fram struck and the arm which wielded a dagger flew as the shrill of the creature filled the air. He, at the very least, seemed aware of his companion. He jumped backward, allowing Shana to come in with her own strike.

Yet.

"Huh?" I muttered.

Her sword lodged deep into the creature but, try as she might to complete the slash and lop its head off, she couldn't do it.

"She froze. . ." Jack muttered beside me.

Drats, she really did freeze.

Fram noticed right away and ran to help her.

Shana's weapon was blown away, shock filtering upon her face before a massive punch sent her flying away. My hand, gripping my loaned weapon, tightened as she crashed against the ground with a yelp of pain and a creature stepped towards her with a roar that shook the air.

"What the hell just happened?" Jack spoke speechlessly by my side.

The goblin's body rolled about like a mass of meat before expanding and towering until it became a fully healed orc, standing over both Fram and a Shana struggling to stay awake as she laid upon the ground.

"Ah. . .Ahem-! It seems the creature has evolved!" The announcer quickly yelled.

That made no sense.

In none of the 5 worlds I had visited did goblins evolve into orcs on a whim. That made no rhyme or reason. Murmuring and shocked voices filled the colosseum. No one moved to help, not even Albein Mass, who watched the going on within the arena with interest.

Fram ran before Shana, sword held up and eyes shaking upon the demonic beast. With how weak he was, however, there was absolutely no way he could take on the creature.

"I've had enough," I said, grounding my teeth, half-part angered as my mana rolled within me.

Did this creature just waltz in and send my best friend upon the ground? Right in front of me, an ex-hero who had slain dragons, demon lords, and ripped apart titans and myths? How fucking hilarious. I couldn't just stand by and do nothing. No.

I took a step backward and disappeared.

2 (Fram)

Fuck.

Fuck.

We're so so screwed.

I momentarily glanced back at my companion groaning in pain and shock as her eyes squinted. Dammit.

"Wha. . .what are you doing. . .r-un. . ." She managed to utter through groins of pain.

"There's no way am running!" I yelled back.

There was no way I was allowing the first angel I met to die on me! I glared at the advancing orc which towered over my height and gripped my sword tighter. Logic said there was no way I could hope to beat or fight it, but logic be damned, this wasn't a time to be logical. I might be a lesser noble at the bottom of Albion's Academy, but hell if I just ran away from a fight and let my friend die.

"That's. . .so not cool. . ." The girl muttered behind me and I could hear her voice choke up.

"What do you mean? Isn't saving the damsel the epitome of cool?!" I asked back, shocked slightly.

I knew it was useless, and even my family's only sword art would be of little help, but I prepared to charge as my weapon glowed blue.

Yet.

Just as I was about to move.

Just as it took another step forward, leaving an imprint upon the ground, lightning danced as a figure appeared before it and thunder echoed after their movement.

I watched speechlessly as that individual raised a sword.

Their movement was slow, tedious and menial. Yet, it appeared as if time itself tethered to a crawl to allow the figure's drawn-out action. The slash of the blade took seconds to complete its form and even the orc had moved closer by that point.

The result, however, was immeasurable.

The weapon shattered into splinters of iron.

"Wha—"

My words were caught in my throat as my eyes widened.

The orc bisected down its length into two. Then divided horizontally with a line of red, becoming four. Then eight. Then sixteen. Thirty-two. And, finally, when it had become a mass of sliced meat I could no longer count, it shattered into a gas of blood to the shock of every spectator.

I looked at the figure cloaked in the pure white of mana like clothing hiding their complete form. How many slices of its blade had it completed in those few seconds? In that motion, which only appeared to me as one, what had it done?

They stared at their empty hand.

"Even when I controlled it. . .of course its too weak to take my mana. . ." The individual muttered, cloaked in its ever fluorescent white.

They cared not for the beast they had just slaughtered but only the realization that the blade they had wielded was far too weak.

My body trembled.

"Who—who are you?" I asked.

The head of the figure turned around and glanced my way. Behind the gold veil of a mask made of pure mana, ethereal and gas-like, I could see eyes that only showed white.

"I am Zero. Nothing of note."

The words drifted out along with the mana radiating from the individual.

Before I could even contemplate them. . .

They were gone.

Leaving a spark of lightning and thunder in their wake.

And, I realized the colosseum had also been bisected into two, stone and rubble and dust fell from the front and showed the world outside.

That was my first encounter with Zero.

The strongest being in this world.
