Closing the door to her room, Soo-Ah felt a little at ease. At least Jung-In was not going anywhere and she'd found other people she could connect with in this new and immense household where she was supposed to have all the comforts.
It was pleasantly warm inside the pagoda. For so long she only had the trodden earth of a tent under her feet, but now her steps carried her once more on floors heated by an ondol system.
Back in the day, when she used to live at her grandfather's manor, she was curious to see how they heated the house. Ha-Rin Noona gladly took her to the back of the house and showed her the marvel that was the ondol; her grandfather explained how it worked. All it took was lighting a fire in the exterior furnace. The flames heated the stove above, which could be used for cooking or keeping the food warm, while the heat and smoke were carried through dedicated clay passages underneath the floor.
