“We’ll see you later. My best to Sky.” I hung up before she said anything further. “Your mother is expecting us after dinner. Let’s order, shall we?”
Jamie shook his head. “I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“I always do.” I thought briefly of Tanner and sighed. Except when I didn’t.

I didn’t get to see Jamie’s brothers. Barbara deemed them too young to be involved in such a grownup conversation.
I gathered she would have preferred Jamie not be involved in it as well.
As it turned out, my son proved correct. While I’d loved my wife, I’d hardly had the time to know her.
I stared in dismay as Barbara carried on about how unsuitable a woman of Brooklyn Gwinnett’s background was for her son.
“Surely you want better for Jamie,” she demanded of me. “After all, you’re going to be Baron Pennington one day, and Jamie is your heir.”
“What matters is that our son is happy.” I turned to her husband. “Sky?”
