章節 5: Thinking Ahead

Blake made sure his sister went back to sleep and left the hut to tend to the livestock.

With his father's help, and his supernatural strength and energy, he built a hut near his hut to keep the goats and some chickens his father brought from the shadow tower.

He needed a safe place where the animals would not get sick, and could continue to produce milk and eggs.

The hut was about four or five square meters long and wide, and two meters high, it was not easy to make it, although he had the knowledge of how to structure the logs to shape it due to his perfect memory, making it for the first time took them a couple of months.

He had lined the outside walls with branches, leaves and manure to keep the inside warm.

They had also left a log of empty space, just before the roof of the hut, to serve as a vent. And he had to go in every day to clean, collect the eggs from the chickens, and milk the goats.

There were two female goats, one male, and two kids.

As for the hens, there were six, and one rooster.

I was quite satisfied with this little barn I had made.

He didn't know what date it was, but the dead weren't up yet, so he should have some time to think about what to do to survive, or where to escape to.

He needed to wait for his sister to grow up a bit so she could endure the journey.

Perhaps he could join the Night's Watch and then pass his sister and father on the other side of the wall. Or go Hardhome and take a ship to essos when the slavers passed.

Blake frowned slightly.

The choices were to be a slave or be a slaver.

Wasn't there a better way?

Leaving the stable with the milk and eggs, he returned to the hut to make his little sister's meal.

The place he was in was very quiet.

Not that living among savages was safe, but his father was a fierce warrior much feared among his tribe, and outside of it, and he was a cursed child who frightened everyone nearby just by the sight of him.

No one wanted to go near this place.

Blake needed to know where he was in Game of Thrones, perhaps he could use his knowledge to negotiate his way south of the wall before the walkers showed up.

From his perfect memory, he remembered that Eddard Stark was a very compassionate man, he could somehow convince him to let him be his vassal and have safe passage south.

But what to tell him?

Do the dead rise, and if you don't let us pass we will die and invade the south like corpses?

Without proof, it would be impossible to convince a lord like Eddard.

If he could lay his hands on a wraith as proof, perhaps he would have a chance of convincing the lord of the north.

No matter what he said, with a wraith in front of him, there wouldn't be much to leave to chance.

He could give him his knowledge of how to fight them so that they would be better prepared upon his arrival, thus, it would be safer for them to stay south of the wall.

"Aaggguuuuuhh."

Blake listened to his sister's babbling and pulled on thick rabbit fur gloves to play with her.

As a half-dead, his body was supernaturally cold, if he touched his sister too long with his fur, he could hurt her, so he wore gloves to hold her.

It was midday, so Blake dressed his sister in furs and placed her on his back using a sash he had prepared, and left the hut.

Although they were both twins, with their supernatural build, Blake was already half a head taller than his sister.

He was sure that walkers grew much faster than people, as they would not last long as babies after being given to the night king, so he, half-cursed, partly acquired this trait.

He walked to the river and checked the fishing traps he had set, confirming a couple of fish caught.

He took them out to gut them and leave them in a basket with ice to preserve their flesh and went into the forest in search of mushrooms and wild plants.

There wasn't much, the cold didn't let many things grow, but he found some supplies and decided to go back.

He didn't like to go too far into the forest, as the forest itself whispered to him constantly.

He heard voices talking to him, which made him shiver all over his body even though his skin was as cold as ice.

According to his father, it was normal to hear voices in the haunted forest, it was a place cursed by spirits, after all, but because of his constitution, he heard them as very clear whispers, constantly calling him or telling him to stay away, cursing him.

When he returned, it was getting dark, so he prepared dinner, which would again be hot fish stew, and left his sister sleeping while he prepared to work.

Today he would carve a wooden comb and hairpin for his sister.

He needed to be especially careful with the teeth of the comb, but he wasn't worried, he knew she could do it.

He began to work and was surprised to note that he finished much faster than he expected.

He had done both, but felt he was missing something, so he began to carve figures on both, making a white wolf on the comb, and a dragon on the fork.

The dragon hadn't turned out too well, but the wolf was the same as a design he remembered so he nodded in satisfaction.

There were still a few hours before dawn, so, with the help of a charcoal, on a piece of skin, he began to draw a plan of a hut.

He wanted a bigger place to live, this hut was too small and uncomfortable.

So he would talk to his father about making it when he got back.

It would need a lot of wood, but glue was something more important to make sure it would be airtight.

In the barn they used manure, but in his cabin they couldn't use it too, as it might make his sister sick.

He planned to use tree resin and charcoal instead, it would be better to prepare it so he would work on this while his father was away.
