"How could she be married when it was only 5 days ago when it was I who should be marrying her?" Jeff thought to himself.
He did not bother to conceal his frustration from his face. With a bewildered look he looked like a man possessed as he started attacking the steak and gobbling down the meat like it was crispy chips.
Theeya chuckled inwardly at him as she took a sip at her English Breakfast tea.
"Would you like a refill of your tea, Ma'am?" Jane, the waitress came by with a jug and politely smiled at her as she could sense the tension between the couple.
"Yes, please. Thank you Jane," Theeya smiled back with a nod.
Jeff was done with his meal and wiped his mouth with the corners of the napkin, his eyes bearing a thousand questions.
It was finally time to talk.
"What are you doing, Theeya? You knew that we were going to get married," Jeff's eyes betrayed the look of hurt and sadness with a hint of anger.
"I never wanted to go ahead with it. It was you who were forcing it on me," she replied matter-of-factly.
"But I thought you liked me!" He blurted out in quite a loud voice that several diners turned their head to look at them.
Having no self consciousness, Jeff continued to speak in a louder volume as it escalated to an almost yelling volume as his eyes threatened to pop out of their sockets.
Theeya looked calm as a man who looked like the manager walked over and asked her if everything was okay.
She nodded and smiled sweetly as Jeff continued his tirade, not caring about his own image in the public.
"You cannot be married to another man! That would not be what your father wanted for you!" Jeff continued.
Theeya continued to ignore him as she took another sip of her tea.
"Why are you doing this, Theeya? Why? Tell me, I don't understand," he begged.
"I never was sure if I wanted to marry you, Jeff. I liked you but it was more of a high school girl's idolation. I never seriously wanted to marry you," she calmly stated.
"You don't mean that. Someone brainwashed you. Were you drugged? Are you still under the influence of the substance now? Tell me, I can get help for you," he was clutching at straws as his eyes implored her to let him know that his worst fears were not true, that she was not drugged, and she was truly conscious and aware of her decisions.
"I am sober and no, I am not drugged or under any influence of any substances, Jeff. I come out to meet you now to let you know that Zaccheus my husband will be joining us in the expedition," she stated firmly.
"What right does he have to claim you as his wife?!? And to join the expedition, how is that his right to join OUR expedition?" his eyes turned fierce and flashed with rage as he entertained the thought of another man owning Theeya tagging along in HIS expedition.
"You don't mean all these Theeya. You don't really mean all that you said. You must be threatened and wired up, aren't you? He's listening to everything that we are talking about now, isn't he?" Jeff's eyes began to have a crazed look in them.
Just when he stood up and wanted to reach out to grab Theeya across the table with his jugular veins popping out from his neck, suddenly he was pushed back into his seat by a pair of strong hands.
"Who are you? How dare you push me!?!" Jeff screamed.
The man with dark glasses appeared cold and calm as he stared at Jeff.
Theeya raised her brows as she took another sip of her tea. Just then a pair of familiar arms came and rested on her shoulders.
"Hello wife," Zaccheus softly greeted Theeya and she smiled at his voice. His voice was soft and gentle but loud enough for Jeff to hear.
Theeya turned to her left and she was gifted with a soft kiss on her lips as the man took his place beside her, further taunting the agitated Jeff.
"Peter, at ease," he said, and the man in dark glasses and short dark curls eased his offensive stance. Peter took a few steps back and blended into the background.
"Meet Zaccheus, my husband. Darling, this is Jeff, Professor Everett who leads the expedition," Theeya sweetly smiled at both men.
"You cannot have her!!! She is mine!" Jeff growled like an animal ready to pounce on Zaccheus.
"Lord Valentine, is there a problem at this table?" the manager came by and asked Zaccheus.
"Everything is alright, John. No problem at all. Can you please put this table under my tab," Zaccheus smiled brightly as he turned to Jeff and said: "Lunch is on the house."
Jeff Everett's face turned ashen as realisation hit him.
"You are Zach Valentine, the last Lord of Vignasir. How can it be possible? You are a myth," gasped Jeff.
"Myth is based on the truth, Professor Everett. So is the mythical Forty Thieves cave. I shall claim my ancestor's spot in the expedition. See you and the entire entourage tomorrow at the Malabar. Have a good day," Zaccheus helped Theeya to get on her feet and the two of them left a flabbergasted Jeff stuck in his seat.
As they walked out of The Paradise restaurant, Jeff placed his left arm around Theeya's waist to let every man who would even dare to look her way that she was off limits. His stance screamed: "She's mine!"
"Peter, drive the mini home," Zaccheus passed the spare keys of the Mini Cooper to Peter who suddenly appeared from the background. "Was he a ninja?" thought Theeya.
"Come with me, wifey," Zaccheus motioned her to walk towards the park nearby.
They kept on walking in silence as Theeya watched the passing vessels on the river.
"The Valentine family owned the entire river and the entire lands within fifty mile radius of either banks of this river," he beamed.
"So being immortal has its perks, eh?" Theeya tried to downplay her feelings of overwhelm by cracking a joke.
Jeff felt off right from the start. When he asked her to marry him she hesitated many times. When Zaccheus asked her to marry him, it felt easier to just follow through and get it done and over with. It was a different feeling.
"I thought you told me to go shopping today. I've had lunch, now I want to check out the malls. Do we own them too?" Theeya quizzed.
"Yes, we do," he held her gaze and she felt the intensity in his eyes.
"Thank you for rescuing me from Jeff. I did not really want to marry him. Magdalena actually warned me about him," Theeya said softly.
"Magdalena is my sister," Zaccheus casually stated.
"She's a demon too? Ageless and immortal like you? Why am I not surprised anymore? Of course the trusted psychic of the legion of the Forty Thieves is your sister as well," Theeya laughed at the irony of the situation.
"She is my younger sister. And yes she is a demon too but a good one. I would like to think that I am neutral, not good, not evil," he smiled at her as he brushed a stray curl away from her face.
"I can live with that, what is good and what is evil anyway," Theeya smiled as her fingers intertwined with his as they resumed walking towards the white building with the sign "Paradise Mall".
