章節 8: Chapter 8

"A quirk assessment test?!" We all echoed, now standing on the field. The rest of the first year students were at orientation entrance ceremony whereas Aizawa had us gathered out here. U.A. is known for its flexible teaching methods but it appears I underestimated just how flexible that meant.

"What about the entrance ceremony? The orientation?" A brown haired girl asked, a bit frantically.

"If you're going to become a hero, you don't have time for such leisurely events." Aizawa answered without hesitation. "U.A.'s selling point is how unrestricted its school traditions are. That also refers to how the teachers run their classes."

His words put a dampener on the moods of the class but that was the furthest thing from my mind. Not a lot is known about EraserHead, I'm curious. What kind of person is he under the label of 'Hero'? The unkempt and admittedly uncaring air around him couldn't be all there was, could it?

"You kids have been doing these since junior high, too, right?" He then held up his phone to display a list of…something. It's not exactly clear from this distance but he continued speaking. "Physical fitness tests where you weren't allowed to use your quirks. The country still uses averages taken from results from students not using their quirks, it's not rational. Well, the ministry of Education is procastinating."

Those last parts are just him ranting from the sound of it.

He then turned to me. "Kaneko, you finished at the top of the practical exam, right?" he asked and for a brief second, behind me, I heard some muttering about said information finally being confirmed. "In junior high, what was your best result for the 50 meter dash?"

It was then that I noticed that we were conveniently beside a track area which already had monitoring machines set up.

"Around six seconds." I answer truthfully, causing him to pause before giving me a scrutinizing look. It was a little under six seconds.

I lived without being able to use my quirk for more than half my life and I spent that time building my body. The athletes of the pre-quirk era were an example of what mankind could do with pure hardwork and dedication.

After a moment that felt too long, Aizawa continued. "Now try doing it with your quirk."

Following his instruction, I was soon in a running position at the start of the track. Fortunately, the shoes I had on were my empowered running shoes. The school uniform wasn't restrictive with footwear so I figured I pair them together.

To my surprise, the monitoring machine at the other end of the track spoke up, in a clearly artificial voice. "On your mark…"

So not only will it be monitoring, it would be officiating. Tensing, I prepare to take off.

"Get set…" It was time.

Barely a second later, I heard the gunshot, signaling the start of the dash and I had already burst into action the moment the sound reached my ears. Compared to the morning runs I did with the shoes, this was a breeze as I had used the past month to get used to moving at higher speeds.

I blitzed past the finish line almost as fast as I started it. The machine spoke out once more.

"1.26 seconds." It announced.

As I turned back to the class, I noticed the pin drop silence, even Aizawa appeared stunned judging by the slight widening of his eyes. Then came the excitement from the class.

"One second? Seriously?" One of my classmates muttered, a blond with a black lightning bolt hair design.

"That's so cool! It looks fun!" That came from a different person. I quickly realize that it's the pink skinned girl. I vaguely recall seeing her at the exam and I'm no closer to figuring out her quirk.

"Asahi Kaneko," Aizawa called out, cutting through the chatter. "If I'm not mistaken, your quirk is called Energy, isn't it?"

I think I messed up, now all the attention was on me. "It is."

"Would you care to elaborate?" He asked, his observing gaze a sharp contrast from the uncaring one he'd displayed so far.

I still haven't updated my quirk registration information and I don't plan to do so anytime soon. "It's not that complicated. It allows me to empower myself with different effects."

That is technically true, I just didn't specify how. It allows me to empower items with different effects and those effects empower me. Whether or not he believed me, he didn't press the issue, turning back to the class. Still, that attentive gaze didn't leave his eyes.

With all that was going on, I didn't miss the way the violent boy from earlier was still seething, glaring at me like I killed his pet or something. Not really my problem.

"Alright, let's change things up a bit." Aizawa's voice dragged my focus back to him but that wasn't all that caught my eye. It was subtle but the man now stood straighter, causing me to frown at the smirk that now played on the man's lips. "Whoever comes in last place at the end of the day will be judged to have no potential and will be punished with expulsion."

"""Huh?!"""

He turned to me, his voice low enough that I was the only recipient. "I expect you to do your best."

This guy is crazy.

-[Aizawa]-

Asahi Kaneko, top scorer in the exam…there was more to that. Today he moved faster than he ever did during the exam, a decent bit faster. The change was too sharp to be a normal quirk growth curve.

Either he was holding back during the exams or something else was up. Given the stakes, it wouldn't make sense to hold back during the exams, not so much at least. That meant that there was something else.

His 'explanation' of his quirk's details was vague, he suspected that was intentional. During the time the students were changing, he took another peek at the boy's file. An orphan living alone for the most part, surviving off government pension as part of the relief act in government law for victims of pro hero clashes with villains.

In this case, it was quite a sloppy job. Leaving a ten year old to live on his own, added with the trauma that caused it (which the boy witnessed), would certainly be a recipe for psychological issues. Issues that he'd seen hints of in this brief time.

The look of recognition he'd initially misunderstood as fanboyish was, instead, one of curiosity and slight caution. Asahi was attentive but he doubted the boy himself noticed the way his eyes flickered around, taking in as much as it could, tense. His body language gave off the same flighty feeling but much more subtle.

Most would mistake it for nervousness but he'd seen it enough times to know what it really was. Trauma; left untreated for years and allowed to grow. That trauma would either make him or break him and in the event that it broke him, he was better off not being a hero.
