One of the most criticized aspects of the Premier League is its intense Christmas schedule. While players in other leagues enjoy a winter break, Premier League players face a relentless series of games. Some media have even suggested that England's poor performances in summer tournaments are linked to the lack of a winter break in the Premier League. Arsenal fans, in particular, often blame their team's spring collapses on the demanding Christmas schedule.
Players are pushed to their limits during this period, but for the fans, it's a joyous time. There's nothing better than spending the holidays watching Premier League matches with family. Unfortunately, it's the players who bear the brunt of the schedule's demands.
Su Luo, too, was feeling the strain of Premier League life. Since December began, Chelsea's training sessions had been non-stop, with games coming one after another. Despite their 15-game winning streak, the pressure of leading the league weighed heavily on them. A single slip-up could see Manchester City close the 6-point gap in no time.
Conte, Chelsea's coach, was relentless, demanding more from his players. Even Su Luo had toned down his usual nightlife and was focusing on his game.
In the 16th round of the Premier League, Chelsea faced Sunderland away. Sunderland, currently at the bottom of the table, were fighting to avoid relegation. Teams in their position often put up a fierce fight, and Sunderland was no exception, especially at their home ground, the Stadium of Light.
With the FA turning a blind eye, Sunderland employed every tactic possible—sliding tackles, judo-like moves, wrestling, and rough play. The game was constantly interrupted, and players were frequently knocked down. Referee Andy Madeley lost control of the match. When Sunderland's players fouled Chelsea's Ajar from behind, the referee did nothing. But when Chelsea players surrounded the referee to protest, Matic was shown a yellow card.
Su Luo, as the most valuable player on the field, was targeted heavily by Sunderland. He was knocked down 11 times during the match. Fortunately, he was able to anticipate his opponents' moves with the help of Modric's vision, using "bullet time" to dodge dangerous challenges. Otherwise, he would have been stretchered off.
Realizing the situation, Su Luo adapted by minimizing his dribbling and focusing on quick one-touch passes. This not only kept him safe but also allowed him to create significant opportunities. In the first half, Su Luo made two quick passes that nearly led to goals. On one occasion, Ajar was half a step too slow to reach the ball, while on another, Pedro successfully received Su Luo's pass and nearly scored.
With Lukaku out, Su Luo played as a center-forward, frequently dropping back to support the midfield. Pedro was on form, scoring in the first half to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Su Luo continued to control the game, and Chelsea extended their lead to 2-0. In the final 10 minutes, Pedro scored again, securing a 3-0 victory for Chelsea, who maintained their perfect record.
However, just two days after the Sunderland game, Chelsea had to play away against Crystal Palace. The packed schedule was taking its toll on the team. Many players had not yet fully recovered, and key players like Ajar, Kante, Matic, and Rudiger had to start on the bench.
Despite starting the match, Su Luo faced intense pressure from Crystal Palace. In the first half, Crystal Palace took advantage of their home ground, scoring early with a controversial goal. Mount, who made a rare start, struggled against the aggressive opposition, leading to a pass error that allowed Crystal Palace to break through and score again. Chelsea found themselves 2-0 down, on the verge of a shocking defeat.
At halftime, Conte remained calm. He knew the team was in a difficult situation.
"Let's hang in there," he said. "Champions must overcome all sorts of adversity. The good news is we still have 45 minutes. If everyone pushes a little harder, we can turn this around. The Premier League title is waiting for us!"
Before sending the players back on the pitch, Conte patted Su Luo on the shoulder. He knew that if anyone could pull off a miracle, it was Su Luo—the "King of Comebacks."
Su Luo didn't disappoint. Early in the second half, he seized an opportunity and fired off a long-range shot from his own half. The ball soared over 50 meters and dipped under the crossbar, just out of the goalkeeper's reach, and into the net.
"Su Luo's super long-range lob shot!" the commentator Zhan Jun exclaimed, holding his breath in anticipation. "This could be it!"
The ball hit the back of the net, and the crowd erupted.
"Su Luo's long-range sniper strikes again! He's brought Chelsea back into the game!"
"At the most critical moment, it's Su Luo who steps up!"
"With this goal, Su Luo has broken Alan Shearer's record of 34 goals!"
"Su Luo has set a new Premier League record with 35 goals!"
Chelsea's morale surged, and they pressed hard, forcing Crystal Palace into mistakes. Cesc Fabregas intercepted a pass and lobbed the ball to Su Luo, who was surrounded by three defenders. In a flash, Su Luo switched to "Ronaldo mode," exploding with pace as he raced toward the penalty area. With a dazzling display of skill, he executed Ronaldinho's signature "elastico" move, leaving the defenders behind and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.
As the ball found the back of the net, Su Luo turned to the visiting Chelsea fans, dropped to his knees, and celebrated.
"Two goals in one minute! Su Luo has leveled the game!"
"Captain Su Luo plays the hero once again!"
"His 36th Premier League goal! Can you believe it? This is only Su Luo's first Premier League season!"
Crystal Palace's confidence shattered. They became increasingly desperate, making more errors as Chelsea pressed on. The Blues had numerous chances to counterattack...
In the 68th minute of the match, Cesc Fabregas and Su Luo executed a brilliant one-two pass in the midfield. Su Luo then delivered a perfectly timed lob, allowing Fabregas to strike the ball on the volley, scoring a stunning goal!
From 2-0 down to leading 3-2, Chelsea had scored three goals in the second half to complete an incredible comeback!
Fabregas was overjoyed, sliding on his knees in celebration. However, due to the overly watered turf, he hilariously slid all the way off the pitch.
Chelsea players rushed in, piling on top of each other in celebration.
With Su Luo contributing 2 goals and 1 assist, Chelsea had successfully overturned Crystal Palace and maintained their perfect winning streak.
Chelsea had scored an astounding 60 goals in 17 matches, with Su Luo delivering a phenomenal performance of 36 goals and 18 assists, extending Chelsea's winning streak to 17 consecutive victories in the Premier League!
Chelsea had shattered Arsenal's previous record of 14 consecutive wins and were now just five games away from Real Madrid's 22-match winning streak set in 2014.
The good news was that after defeating Crystal Palace, Chelsea finally had a brief respite. The FA Cup and League Cup matches were scheduled for early January, with the Champions League knockout rounds starting in mid-February. The next Premier League match was on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, giving Chelsea nine days to recuperate.
In recognition of the team's outstanding performance, Conte granted the players two days off, though they still had to train over the Christmas period.
Josephine had originally planned to spend a romantic Christmas with Su Luo, but the Premier League's demanding schedule disrupted her plans.
On Christmas Eve, the couple cozied up in their London villa and watched the classic movie Love Actually.
After the movie ended, Josephine sighed, "It's so romantic."
Su Luo grinned, "The real romance is just beginning," he said, picking her up and carrying her upstairs.
It was a silent night in name only; the atmosphere at Su Luo's mansion was anything but quiet.
Then came Boxing Day, a traditional matchday in the Premier League. Chelsea hosted Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
Su Luo, rejuvenated from his time with Josephine, was in exceptional form. Despite Bournemouth's tight defense, he managed to create several opportunities.
In the first half, Su Luo capitalized on a corner kick, heading the ball into the net.
In the second half, he made a brilliant diagonal run, catching the defense off guard. After receiving a pass from Ajar, he beat the offside trap and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
2-0!
Later in the match, Su Luo was brought down 27 meters from the goal. Fueled by determination, he stepped up to take the free kick himself.
Channeling the techniques of De Bruyne and Ronaldinho, Su Luo curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner!
3-0!
Su Luo had scored a hat-trick, leading Chelsea to a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth.
With 18 consecutive wins, Chelsea had secured the Premier League's half-season championship a round ahead of schedule.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was thrilled, declaring in a post-match interview, "The best money I've ever spent was signing Su Luo!"
"I love China!"
