章節 2: Two

"Brother Bai," Dong Mei pouted, looking wronged because she had been ignored.

She opened her mouth to say something more when an arm blocked her lips. The wide lace sleeves of the robe hovered a few meters away from her lips but still stopped her from saying more.

"No need for more words. We just came here to make sure that you don't throw the beautiful Miss Li into a ditch! Otherwise what would we do? With all the ditches you've dug, it would take even the greatest martial artist more than a day or two to get her back," he said.

Dong Mei frowned and said through gritted teeth, "Cang Mang, if you don't speak, no one would ask you to." She finally addressed the man that had walked in with her brother Bai and was throwing nasty comments at her.

In Dong Mei's eyes, Cang Mang was simply a dog following around her Brother Bai, begging for crumbs. He craved for Bai's glory and hence leaned into his shadow to have just a fraction of it. Because in every way, Brother Bai was better than Cang Mang.

Brother Bai was more studious. He had passed many exams and was about to try out for the national exam to become an official. He was so smart that he only had to do it once to pass it. Dong Mei was sure, from the events in the book that he would rise up like a heavenly dragon as soon as he finished the national exam.

Brother Bai was a man of few words and he had a gentle personality. Not only that, but he was loyal. In the book, it said that he had only Li Hua in his courtyard despite the number of women that threw themselves at him or those that he required to maintain his power.

That's what drove Dong Mei to want him more and more. So ever since she gained her awareness, her pursuit was relentless.

Brother Bai was beautiful. His features were smooth, his hair long and dark and as for his height; he soared above most men and stood behind his woman like a mountain.

Brother Bai had a lean physic so when he put on robes, he looked something like a male fairy descending the sky.

Meanwhile, Cang Mang was a bit more masculine, with a medium build so he looked a little odd in the robes that he kept forcing himself into. He looked as though he had stolen a dress from his sister or so.

Unlike her brother Bai, Cang Mang's face was slightly angular, with a bit of a stubble and thick eyebrows. He kept his hair short and in a small crown while brother Bai let his go generously.

Cang Mang had a rough personality especially towards Dong Mei when issues concerning Li Hua came up.

See, not only was her brother Bai bewitched by Li Hua, so was the loyal dog, Cang Mang. About Cang Mang, she would care less. In fact, she even hoped that he would snatch Li Hua and keep her far far away from her brother Bai. But of course he failed.

Dong Mei would only describe that as him not being half the man she expected him to be. She thought that he would grab the bull by the horns and lead it into its cage. But who knew that he would also be unable to win against her brother Bai?

In the book, Cang Mang was resigned to the fate of standing aside as the two love birds built a nest and laid their eggs. To make it worse, he even helped them to build the nest and took care of their chicks.

His job in the entire script was to keep Li Hua safe when the male lead could not get to her fast enough. Then he would have to selflessly hand her back to brother Bai when he arrived.

Most of the time, he thrashed away Dong Mei's efforts at getting between the main couple as if a mother hen protecting the plot.

When Dong Mei set up an alternate plot there, she would come back to find that Cang Mang had loudly undone it for her. When she tried a way here, she found that Cang Mang had already blocked it.

He made no secret of the deeds he made for Li Hua. Openly showing the world exactly how vicious Dong Mei was. But because she was never caught red handed and neither did Li Hua push her away, her activities were never pursued. The idea of her as a bad person was only a forced perception in people's minds.

If she hadn't known of his interest in Li Hua, she would think that Cang Mang had a particular hatred for her. Though it wasn't too lucky, he only bothered her when she bothered Li Hua.

So that was the story. It was set in a small town's village. Dong Mei, the beloved daughter of the village chief against Li Hua, an abandoned child who lived with a blind old man. Even then, she didn't let her sad situation ruin her good personality.

Both girls hearts were glued to Bai Yangwai, who had a strong brotherhood with the fellow, Cang Mang. Unlike the other three, Cang Mang's family only resettled to that village a few years in the past.

The protagonists of the story were tied together by fate's red string and would eventually get together. While Dong Mei would run mad at the end of it, Cang Mang would be resigned to the fate of guarding the protagonists from storms of wind and rain, like a stone qilin at a main entrance.

And even after gaining awareness of the events to come, Dong Mei still tried to get what she wanted. She only promised to be smarter about it. But things were not looking up.

"If I don't talk, then the world will continue to be blind towards you. And in such a case, who knows what you will try to get away with?" Cang Mang spoke openly.

Dong Mei's expression stiffened at his words. She looked to the side at her brother Bai to find him fully occupied with Li Hua. The sight of it made her eyes feel like bleeding out, so she quickly looked away.
