Back at the Fire
"Kael's still hurting," Lyra said quietly, watching him disappear into the night.
Selene nodded, unable to speak.
Lyra placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Give him time. He'll come around."
Damian, who had been quiet for most of the evening, finally spoke. "Time doesn't heal everything," he said, his gaze softening as he looked at Lyra. "Sometimes, it just makes you realize what you lost."
Lyra turned to him, a flicker of something passing between them, something that neither of them had yet acknowledged.
Selene watched the exchange, a pang of understanding hitting her. Damian had always been reserved, but now, seeing the way he looked at Lyra, she realized there was more to his feelings than he let on. It reminded her of the way Kael had looked at her all those years ago, before she had broken his heart.
The silence stretched between them, and Selene knew that if she didn't start to fix things, she would lose Kael forever.
Flashback
At eight years old, Selene had scraped her knee while playing on the beach. Tears streamed down her face as she looked at the small cut, convinced it was the worst injury in the world.
Kael, always the protector, rushed over to her, his eyes wide with concern. "Don't cry," he said, pulling out a bandage from his pocket.
She sniffled, watching as he carefully placed the bandage over her knee. "Better?"
Selene nodded, her tears subsiding. "Why do you always carry bandages?"
Kael shrugged, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Just in case you get hurt."
Even back then, he had wanted to protect her. And Selene, though she didn't realize it at the time, had relied on him for that. But somewhere along the way, she had decided that she didn't want to be protected anymore. She had wanted freedom, wanted to find herself outside of their perfect little world.
Present Day
As the fire crackled and the waves rolled in, Selene looked at Lyra and Damian. "What happened while I was gone?" she asked softly, her gaze shifting between them.
Lyra hesitated, glancing at Damian before she spoke. "Not much. Life went on."
But Damian's eyes told a different story. He looked at Lyra with a tenderness that Selene hadn't seen before. It was clear that something had changed between them, though neither of them seemed ready to admit it.
Selene sighed, the weight of her own unspoken words heavy on her heart. "I don't know how to fix things with Kael," she confessed. "I don't know if I even can."
Lyra smiled softly. "You can. It'll just take time."
And for the first time in years, Selene hoped that maybe, just maybe, Lyra was right.
