If Loreen hated him this much, then he would give her what she wanted.

She did not need to makeup such lies just so she would win the case and get what she wanted from him. 

He would divorce her before she could divorce him.

But he would no longer give her half of all his properties. 

If she was willing to stay by his side, she could have had half or even all his assets. 

But now that they are divorcing, he could no longer give that much.

His parents would not allow him to give away his inheritance.

Edric's inheritance was his parents' and those before them had worked hard for. His parents and relatives would meddle if they learned he was giving half of it to Loreen as alimony.

Thus, Edric decided to give Loreen alimony based on the law.
