"Where were you yesterday? You skipped class for the first time ever. That's really unlike you, Sophia. What happened?" Jasmine asked, her voice carrying a mix of confusion and unmistakable concern as she leaned forward, studying Sophia's face.
Sophia looked away, struggling to maintain her composure. "I was at the hospital, watching over Mark," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. The lie slipped out easily, but the sadness in her tone was real, casting a veil of sincerity that made Jasmine accept it without question.
"Okay, that makes sense," Jasmine said, nodding slowly. "How is he, by the way? I'm sorry I haven't been by. You know I can't stand hospitals." She bit her lip as her gaze drifted downward, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her sleeve.
