The business Cayenne cruised along the road, slicing through the silent night of Jiangcheng City.
Just returning from the company, Long Yejue was reviewing documents while his assistant and driver, An Yi, handled the wheel.
"Jue Shao, we've completely secured the JR case this time. It's a big step forward for Jue Corporation. Don't you think we deserve a little break?" An Yi asked with a cheeky grin.
"Thinking of a break?" Long Yejue raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with mischief.
An Yi immediately felt as though he'd tugged on a tiger's whiskers and clammed up.
Just then, Long Yejue's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID before casually tossing the phone aside.
An Yi craned his neck to peek and, spotting the name, burst out laughing. "Another nagging marriage call? The chairwoman sure is persistent."
"Shut up and focus on driving." Long Yejue barked coldly.
Bored, An Yi rolled his eyes and kept driving.
At an intersection, however, a white figure suddenly darted out, forcing him to slam on the brakes.
The sharp screech echoed through the quiet street. The Cayenne, moving too fast, still knocked the figure to the ground despite his desperate braking.
An Yi froze, horrified. He'd hit someone!
Long Yejue immediately stepped out of the car and strode over to check on the victim.
Tang Mianmian felt her head spinning as she rubbed her aching knee. Before she could cry out, a firm hand yanked her upright.
"Miss, are you okay?"
Okay?
She was anything but okay!
Her boyfriend was getting married, and the bride wasn't her. How ironic was that?
She went out to drink her sorrows away, only to get hit by a car!
"God! I, Tang Mianmian, have always obeyed the law, respected the elderly, and never even stole candy from children. How could you be so blind and let me get hit by a car?" she yelled indignantly.
The man supporting her frowned slightly. Drunk, he realized.
Still, the fact that she could curse at the heavens suggested she wasn't seriously hurt. Though he disliked women who drank excessively late at night, he politely asked, "Miss, where do you live? I'll take you home."
"I'm not going back!" Tang Mianmian shook off his hand, trying to stand on her own. But before she could steady herself, she toppled again.
This time, the man caught her quickly.
She blinked in surprise, not feeling the expected pain. Looking up, she met his deep-set eyes.
For a moment, she froze.
But only for a moment!
"Are you God's compensation gift to me?" Tang Mianmian asked, squinting at him. Her small hands clung to his shirt as she spoke, looking adorably naive.
Long Yejue's face darkened.
There was no reasoning with a drunkard. He had no choice but to pick her up and plan to drop her off at a hotel.
But the woman in his arms suddenly became excited. Letting go of his shirt, she cupped his face with her hands and exclaimed, "It seems God isn't heartless after all. He's sent me a man as compensation. I'm going to cheat too!"
With that, she leaned in and kissed him hard.
Caught off guard and unable to retaliate with his hands full, Long Yejue was thoroughly taken advantage of.
Disgusted, he immediately let go, letting her fall to the ground.
Tang Mianmian yelped in pain before everything went black.
An Yi, initially stunned by the accident, finally snapped out of it. He was just in time to see his usually cold and aloof boss get forcefully kissed!
A historical moment!
Before he could pull out his phone to capture the scene, he saw Long Yejue throw the woman to the ground without mercy.
That looked painful. It might not bother a burly guy like him, but for a young woman, it was brutal.
Hurriedly, An Yi got out of the car and asked nervously, "Jue Shao, are you okay?"
"Get this thing in the car and drop her at a hotel!" Long Yejue ordered, his face dark with rage. He wiped his lips in disgust before storming back to the car and slamming the door shut.
An Yi broke into a cold sweat.
This was a person, not a "thing!"
Still, the woman had guts to kiss Long Yejue. Taking a closer look at her, he thought, despite her current disheveled state, her delicate features were quite appealing. Properly dressed up, she'd likely be a beauty.
"What are you staring at? Hurry up!" Long Yejue snapped, poking his head out to yell.
An Yi quickly hoisted the "thing" into the back seat and drove to a hotel.
Tang Mianmian woke up feeling like she'd been run over by a truck. Every part of her body ached as if it had fallen apart.
Damn it, had she gotten drunk and been beaten up?
She stared blankly at the unfamiliar room, her mind momentarily sluggish. Where was she?
Her eyes landed on the hotel's logo, and alarm bells went off in her head. She quickly looked down at her clothes.
"Thank goodness, thank goodness," she muttered in relief.
Her clothes were messy but intact, and nothing seemed amiss.
But why was she in a hotel?
After getting her bearings in the unfamiliar hotel, Tang Mianmian stepped out and asked the front desk about her situation. Only then did she learn that two men dressed in black had brought her here.
What the hell? What had she done last night?
Her elbows and knees bore small scrapes, likely from a clumsy tumble. Gritting her teeth against the pain, she unleashed a fresh wave of mental curses at that bastard Su Shijie.
She had painstakingly snuck her household registration book out from home to marry him, only to catch him fooling around with her best friend, Yan Youlan.
Just thinking about it filled her with rage!
She had only asked her best friend to help look after her boyfriend—not to "look after" him in bed!
And yet, she had tried to endure it all.
She found a new apartment, a job, and vowed to leave everything behind and start fresh. But just as she began picking up the pieces, Yan Youlan called, asking to meet.
Meet, my ass!
Tang Mianmian wanted to refuse, but Yan Youlan baited her with a challenge: "What? Are you scared to come?"
Furious and not wanting to back down, she went.
Armed with full fighting spirit, she had barely sat down when Yan Youlan handed her a wedding invitation, destroying her resolve in an instant.
To this day, she remembered Yan Youlan's words:
"Mianmian, you've been my best friend since childhood. I'd feel incomplete if you didn't attend my wedding. Please, come. It would mean so much to me."
Tang Mianmian had nearly retorted, Have you ever seen a best friend steal a boyfriend?
But before she could speak, Yan Youlan delivered a knockout blow:
"Mianmian, I really love Su Shijie, and he loves me too. Otherwise, he wouldn't have ended things with you after five years together. Can you give us your blessing?"
Tang Mianmian had wanted to flip the table. Bless you, my ass! Why the hell should I?
But before she could explode, Yan Youlan dropped another bombshell:
"Mianmian, I'm pregnant. I'm going to be a mom, and Shijie's going to be a dad. Remember how we said we'd be godmothers to each other's children? That means you're the godmother now. Aren't you excited?"
"Excited!" she had hissed through gritted teeth, barely choking out the words. "Very excited!"
She admired her self-restraint, not having blown up on the spot.
But once she got home, she fell apart. Depressed and frustrated, she went out drinking, which led to her waking up in a hotel room.
Why hadn't something exciting—like a one-night stand—happened instead?
Apparently, getting sent to a hotel by strange men was the most excitement her life would allow. So much for those misleading movie clichés.
Her phone rang, interrupting her spiral of self-pity. The name on the screen made her blood boil: Yan Youlan.
What now?
She stuffed the phone back into her bag, refusing to answer lest it ruin her mood further.
But Yan Youlan was persistent, calling nonstop until a nearby older woman grew annoyed. "Miss, your phone's been ringing forever!"
Exasperated, Tang Mianmian snatched up her phone and answered curtly, "What is it?"
"Mianmian, you finally picked up! I just wanted to remind you it's my wedding day today. Did you pick your dress yet? I'm doing my final fitting. It's your favorite brand, you know. The dresses this season are gorgeous—you should come try one!"
"…No thanks," Tang Mianmian replied, suppressing the urge to scream. She felt like a herd of galloping horses was stampeding through her mind.
"Come on! You must have picked an even better dress. I knew you wouldn't disappoint me. You're the best friend anyone could ask for." Yan Youlan's sickly sweet words made Tang Mianmian's stomach churn.
"I'm busy. Gotta go," she snapped, cutting the call.
"Fine, but I'll see you at the banquet!" Yan Youlan chirped, her fake regret almost enough to make Tang Mianmian gag.
Stupid, two-faced witch!
Tang Mianmian vented her frustration internally and pulled out the invitation she had nearly eaten in a fit of rage. The event began at precisely 1:14 PM—symbolizing "a lifetime together."
Su Shijie and Yan Youlan, those damn jerks!
Flinging the invitation into her bag, she took a deep breath and exited the subway, heading to a boutique for a dress.
This time, she'd go all out.
Standing in front of the display window of the exclusive "Void" brand, she hesitated. Just one dress would plunge her into debt.
Given her current circumstances, it was reckless to splurge on something so expensive.
But pride burned in her chest.
She couldn't swallow this humiliation. In the end, she let her emotions take over.
As her credit card reached its limit, she changed into a stunning dress and asked the staff to do her makeup.
"Make it bold," she insisted.
The makeup artist looked puzzled. Makeup was makeup—how could it be bold? What, did she want to look like a ghost or something?
Satisfied with her appearance in the mirror, Tang Mianmian left the boutique and hailed a taxi to the Haojue Hotel.
On the way, she stopped at a bank. Stepping inside, she slapped two thousand yuan onto the counter.
"Change this into one-yuan coins," she demanded, arms crossed firmly.
The staff stared at her as if she were a mythical creature.
But faced with her determination, they complied, handing over a heavy bag of coins. Tang Mianmian lugged it back to her taxi and continued to the hotel.
Arriving just on time, she spotted the grinning pair greeting guests at the entrance.
Drawing a deep breath, she straightened her back and strode forward confidently.
Su Shijie's face turned pale with shock when he saw her. "Mianmian, what are you doing here?"
"Don't play dumb, Su Shijie. Didn't you invite me? What's wrong? Afraid to let me attend your wedding?" she sneered, curling her lips coldly.
Su Shijie's expression grew dark with guilt. "Mianmian, I'm sorry…"
"Save it. Move aside. I'm here to deliver my gift." She shoved past him without hesitation.
Yan Youlan, having just greeted another guest, rushed over and clung to Su Shijie's arm, her affection on full display. Smiling sweetly, she said, "Mianmian, you made it! I was worried you wouldn't come. Thank you so much."
"You're welcome," Tang Mianmian replied through gritted teeth, tossing the heavy bag of coins onto the gift table with a loud thud.
