章節 13: Four Avatars Part III

“There are only six cards! Not sixty!?” He exclaimed in surprise.

“That’s right…I set up that combo. There’s a very low chance of success when used in a real battle. Think about it, if you pull out these crappy cards one by one, you will die for sure,” she said with a smile. “I just want to teach him a lesson seeing how arrogant he is.”

“What if Tan’s HP hadn’t run out,” Blanche asked as he handed her cards back.

“Then I was doomed…but that’s impossible. I’ve checked his HP and he was sure to die,” Nicki replied, while she poured the juice into her glass and drank it all.

----------------

Five minutes later, Tan finally left the basement and walked upstairs. Seeing his serious expression, Nicki quickly whispered to Blanche. “Don’t tell him,” she said.

Blanche seemed to be confused. “For his own good, trust me,” she continued.

Tan sat down on one of the remaining available chairs, one on the left side from Nicki. He clasped his hand on the table and turned to Nicki.

“Can you teach me that?” His voice filled with determination. Seeing how motivated his friend was, Blanche decided to keep the set-up deck story to himself.

“Why should I help you?” Nicki calmly asked.

“So, you can win the tournament in the next few days,” replied Tan.

The girl gave Tan a look and said, “Give me the real reason. I’m not buying that.” Her voice sounded more serious.

Tan pondered for a moment and then replied. “I’m going to Pieta. There’s someone I want to meet. They have been playing this game since its launch. I don’t want to go there and humiliate myself in the way I did today,” said Tan, while staring at Nicki.

Nicki remained composed before breaking into a smile. “Well, well!” She spoke in a high-pitched voice as she stood up and patted Tan’s shoulder. “So, a girl? Can’t believe you have a cute side,” she teased him.

Tan gave Nicki a serious look. “It’s a guy,” he quavered. Bewildered, Nicki looked at Tan and Blanche.

“Don’t tell me you two are…” Nicki said as she tapped her index fingers against each other.

Tan pretended to be serious but then cracked into laughter. “No! I was just joking! You are silly, can’t believe you fall for that,” he said while giggling. His pitiful state after losing had completely vanished away.

Nicki shook her head and sat down again. “Such a troll,” she said.

----------------

The trio discussed how to arrange their deck and utilize cards and their effects. “You know that cards with effects have gold borders, right?” Nicki asked Tan who nodded back. “These cards, compared to ordinary cards with the same number of stars, are much rarer. This game lets players put three copies of the same card in their deck, but some are different,” she explained as she picked up a card and used it as an example.

“How long have you been playing this game?” Tan asked.

“Since launch,” replied Nicki.

Tan narrowed his eyes. “What’s your level?” He continued.

“Now, 29.”

“Now?” He frowned. “What about then?”

“67…”

“67!?” Tan and Blanche shouted at almost the same time.

“Yes…Six-ty-seven,” Nicki repeated with an indifferent face.

“Then, why are you now at level 29?” Blanche could not help but ask.

“Because the tournament required players to be below level 30,” replied Nicki.

“And what did you do to be at this level?” Blanche carried on with his question.

“Died…” she answered. The answer made Blanche and Tan look at each other. “I let monsters kill me six times and got myself to level 27. I accidentally killed monsters along the way back to town so I’m now at level 29.”

“Is this tournament .really that important?” Tan asked.

“That much,” replied Nicki.

“You just got back to town when we first met, right? You have never asked to join other parties but have chosen us since you were outside of the town. It was when Blanche used his Area Card, and you happened to see his Avatar, so you followed us, right?”

Nicki smiled and replied. “Yep…You’re smart, not bad,” she said.

Blanche widened his eyes and shook his head. “Did you see when his Avatar used that move?” Tan asked.

Nicki nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! That’s why I chose you two…It was so cool.”

“What about your Avatar?” Tan leaned over and asked.

“You’ll see.”

“What are Avatars of higher-class Area Cards like? Even Avatar of an H-Class Area Card is this awesome.” Tan rested his back against the chair, crossed his arms, and appeared to be pondering.

“There are four people that own an A-Class Area Card that we are aware of, the Four Avatars,” Blanche said with a serious voice as Nicki approvingly nodded her head.

“Rian, the Hundred Arms, owns the area of a lost city in the east. Rumor has it that the man owns a deck and Avatar that currently has the highest Attack,” explained Blanche. “The second person has no monster cards in his deck,” he continued.

“What…?” Tan widened his eyes. “No monster cards at all?”

“Cozy, the Crystal Blaze…” Nicki said. “The player that owns a deck full of Magic Cards and the Area Card, Flying Temple Shangri-La.”

“The other is Eureka, the Twelve-winged,” Blanche carried on. “The only girl who possesses an A-Class Area Card. She owns the Area Card called Castle of Illusion.”

“And the last person is?” Tan questioned.

“Hesse, the Hell Gate. He owns two Area Cards, Moon City and Hell River Rodaria,” Nicki crossed her arms and turned solemn as she talked about this person. “He’s probably the most powerful player. Members of his guild started to snatch away Area Cards from other players.”

“Two Area Cards?” Tan widened his eyes.

“Yeah, those two are just A-Class Area Cards though.”

“What do you mean by just A-Class Area Cards?” Confused, Tan asked.

Nicki looked at Tan and snorted. “The Four Avatars have filled their Extra Slot with Area Cards. Though they are Area Cards below A-Class,” she explained.

“That’s crazy!” Hearing that, Tan exclaimed. He could not imagine how powerful the Four Avatars were. He thought that Blanche’s Avatar was very powerful already. Tan started to feel small after hearing the story. “Aren’t these guys too powerful…?”

“Don’t get stressed out!” Nicki beckoned as she saw Tan start to freak out. “Let those guys alone for now…Now we have to prepare ourselves for the tournament. I’ll help you with that…Lover Boy,” she teased him again.

Tan widened his eyes and quickly denied. “Wait! No, no, it’s not what you think it is, nothing much!” He waved his hand, rejecting, which made Nicki and Blanche reach the same conclusion…

…Totally…Something was going on!

“By the way, why didn’t I see your Job Card?” Nicki asked.

“Job Card?” Tan frowned.

Nicki narrowed her eyes and looked at Tan. “Don’t tell me that you haven’t completed your Job Card quest when you have risen to level 15? Blanche already got one. His Captain Igfes is from the quest.” She said as she turned to Blanche who nodded approvingly to that.

“How to do it…?”

“Go and take the quest from an Information NPC in each city. They’re going to give you the quest that’s usually the same as other Jobs, to kill a dozen of level 15-16 monsters,” Nicki leaned against the wall as she explained.

“Easy, I’ll be back then. Blanche…Do you want to go with me?” Tan asked.

“It’s a solo quest. When you take the quest, you’ll be automatically forced to leave the party,” he said. “Just come back here when you’ve completed the quest. Nicki and I have to find additional cards to improve our decks too.”

Tan nodded and left the workshop. He went to a water fountain plaza at the heart of the city. Standing there was an NPC who was an elderly man with a long beard that almost reached the ground. Tan immediately went up to him.

“I want to take the Job Quest.”
